Placebo make theatre debut with score for Brecht production by Royal Shakespeare Company

Rock band Placebo is set to make its mark on the theatre world by scoring a new production of Bertolt Brecht's The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, which will premiere at the Royal Shakespeare Company's Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon in April.

In this darkly comedic play, written in 1941 and based on the rise of Adolf Hitler to power in 1930s Germany, a Chicago mobster named Arturo Ui seeks to dominate the city's vegetable trade through sheer force and intimidation. This production marks the band's first foray into theatre, and they've stated that Brecht's cautionary tale feels "more urgent and prescient" than ever.

The RSC has announced Mark Gatiss as its lead actor in the title role, with Placebo contributing an original score that director SeΓ‘n Linnen described as "glitteringly expansive, darkly seductive and deeply theatrical."

For Placebo's Brian Molko and Stefan Olsdal, this production was a unique creative challenge. They drew inspiration from themes of power, alienation and moral decay, which are central to Brecht's work.

The band has released eight studio albums over the years and have enjoyed several Top 5 singles in their gothic rock-infused music career. This new venture marks an exciting departure for them as they bring their unique sound to a different art form.

In a broader cultural context, The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui offers a timely commentary on today's world, tackling the growing threat from far-right movements both domestically and internationally. As Linnen noted, "As artists, it is our job to speak up and out."

I'm super stoked to see Placebo taking on this iconic play 🀘! I mean, can you imagine that raw energy of theirs translating to the stage? It's going to be intense 😲. Mark Gatiss is a genius choice for Arturo Ui too - he'll bring so much depth to the character. And a new score from Placebo? Absolutely πŸ”₯. Their music is already dark and moody, but I can only imagine how it'll add an extra layer of complexity to Brecht's themes 🀯. Can't wait to see this production come together and hopefully do some justice to Brecht's timeless warning... about the dangers of extremism, anyway 😬.

πŸ€” I mean, isn't it kinda weird that Placebo is getting into theatre? Like, they're a rock band, right? 🎸 But at the same time, I think it's actually kinda cool that they're trying something new. The fact that their original score is going to be "glitteringly expansive" and "darkly seductive"... yeah, that sounds pretty interesting 🀩... but isn't that just gonna clash with Bertolt Brecht's whole "darker themes" vibe? πŸŒ‘

I mean, I guess it's great that they're tackling the issue of far-right movements, which is super timely and important... but can we really trust a rock band to bring nuance to such a complex topic? πŸ€” I'm just not sure if this collaboration is gonna be all it's cracked up to be 😐.

I'm loving this collaboration between Placebo and the Royal Shakespeare Company! 🀩 They're bringing their signature gothic rock sound to a totally different medium, which is super exciting. I mean, who would've thought that Brian Molko's haunting vocals would be the perfect fit for Bertolt Brecht's darkly comedic masterpiece? πŸ˜‚ The fact that they're tackling themes of power, alienation, and moral decay in their score is really interesting - it'll be fascinating to see how they interpret those themes through music.

And I totally agree with SeΓ‘n Linnen's statement that the play feels more urgent and prescient than ever. Brecht's cautionary tale about the rise of far-right movements is indeed timely, especially given what's been happening in the world lately. Placebo is being super bold by jumping into theatre, and it'll be great to see how their unique sound enhances the production.

I'm curious to know more about Mark Gatiss's performance as Arturo Ui - will he bring a lot of depth to the character? And I hope the original score from Placebo doesn't overshadow the play itself (although I have no doubt they'll do it justice). Overall, this collaboration is shaping up to be an amazing production that promises to be both thought-provoking and entertaining! πŸ‘

I'm so stoked about Placebo's new theatre project! 🀘 They're really pushing boundaries by trying something completely different from their usual music vibe. I love how they're taking on Brecht's classic play with a fresh perspective, making it feel even more relevant today. Their original score is going to be insane! 🎡 Mark Gatiss is going to crush it as Arturo Ui too. It's awesome that the band is using their platform to comment on some really important issues like far-right movements. They're not just musicians, they're artists who want to make a difference. I'm definitely keeping an eye on this one and can't wait for the premiere! 🎭

Just read about Placebo doing this Bertolt Brecht play πŸ€”... think its gonna be super dark & intense? Also, Mark Gatiss is lead actor which is cool, hes got some great Shakespeare roles under his belt πŸ”₯. But what I really wanna know is how their music will fit into the performance, are they gonna make it a rock opera or somethin' entirely different 🎡?

I'M SO EXCITED ABOUT PLACEBO'S NEW THEATRE PROJECT!!! 🀩 THEY'RE TAKING ON A CLASSIC PLAY LIKE BRECHT'S THE RESISTIBLE RISE OF ARTURO UI AND ADDING THEIR OWN TWIST WITH AN ORIGINAL SCORE!!! IT'S GOING TO BE SO INTERESTING TO SEE HOW THEY BRING THIS DARKLY COMEDIC STORY TO LIFE ON STAGE!!! MARK GATISS AS ARTURO UI IS GOING TO BE AMAZING, AND I LOVE THAT PLACEBO IS TAKING A STAND AGAINST THE THREATS OF FAR-RIGHT MOVEMENTS WITH THEIR ART!!!

I'm low-key stoked for Placebo's theatrical debut! They're bringing this dark comedy with a serious message to life, and I think it's gonna be lit 🀩. The idea of a Chicago mobster trying to dominate the veg trade is like, super ridiculous, but also kinda terrifying in a way that feels eerily relevant today 😱. Brian Molko and Stefan Olsdal are super talented, and their original score is gonna add this whole new level of depth to the production. I'm all about artists speaking out and using their platforms for change – it's dope to see Placebo taking on Brecht's classic work in such a bold way πŸ’ͺ. Can't wait to catch this show! 🎭

I MEAN, IT'S SO COOL TO SEE PLACEBO GETTING INTO THE THEATRE SCENE!!! THEY'RE GONNA BRING THIS DARK COMEDY ROCK Opera TO LIFE WITH THEIR ORIGINAL SCORE AND I JUST KNOW IT GONNA BE AMAZING!!! I FEEL LIKE THEY'RE ONTO SOMETHING WITH BRECHTS WORK, IT'S LIKE HE WAS TALKING ABOUT OUR SOCIETY TODAY, THE WAY POWER CAN CORRUPT PEOPLE & ERODE MORALITY... IT'S ALL REALLY PRESENT NOW!!!

😊 This is gonna be super interesting to see Placebo bring their dark soundscapes to the theatre scene! I mean, Brian Molko's vocals are all about that brooding vibe, so I can already imagine how intense their score is gonna be for this production. The fact that they're drawing inspiration from Brecht's themes of power and alienation makes total sense - it's like they're speaking truth to power in a different way. 🀘 Can't wait to see Mark Gatiss bring Arturo Ui to life on stage! And hey, it's great that Placebo is taking the leap into theatre - who knows what kind of magic happens when music and performance collide? πŸ’₯

🀯 so Placebo is getting into theatre, that's wild! I mean, I love them for their music, but this is a big deal... they're even creating an original score for The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui. It sounds like it's gonna be dark and intense, which fits perfectly with Brecht's vibe. I'm curious to see how Brian Molko and Stefan Olsdal approach this as a band - have they always been fans of theatre? And what's up with the timing, considering everything that's going on in the world right now... does it feel like they're speaking truth or is it just a coincidence? πŸ€”

u guys think Placebo just jumped into theatre w/ no prep πŸ€”. I mean, what makes them think they can handle a Brecht production? They're known for their gothic rock vibe, not drama 🎭. This feels like a publicity stunt 4 them to get more mainstream recognition. And what's w/ the collaboration w/ Mark Gatiss? Don't they know he's got his own rep w/ theatre already? πŸ™„

Umm, I think Placebo's foray into theatre is gonna be a total disaster πŸ€ͺ... wait, nope, I mean it's gonna be EPIC! πŸ˜‚ They're totally the right choice for this production, I'm sure their music will bring a fresh energy to the stage. But at the same time, isn't Bertolt Brecht's play kinda outdated and not really relevant to modern society? πŸ€” I mean, we've got way more pressing issues to tackle than some old mobster in Chicago... or have we? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

πŸ€” I'm lovin' this collab between Placebo and the RSC! They're bringin' that dark, edgy vibe to Brecht's classic tale, which feels especially relevant today. It's like they're sayin', "Hey, we've got the music to match the mood of our times." I mean, who better to capture the essence of a world goin' haywire than Brian Molko and Stefan Olsdal? Their score is gonna be πŸ”₯ and I can already imagine it gettin' this production's energy up to 11. Mark Gatiss in the lead role sounds like a no-brainer – he's got that whole "dark charmer" thing down pat. Bring on April and let's see how they do! πŸŽπŸ‘

omg u guys, i'm SO down for Placebo making their mark on theatre!!! 🀩 they're gonna bring this darkly comedic masterpiece to life with an original score that sounds πŸ”₯🎡 can't wait to see Mark Gatiss kill it as Arturo Ui, and the RSC is giving me all the feels with this production πŸŽπŸ’– placebo's Brian & Stefan are literally geniuses for tackling Brecht's themes of power & alienation in their own unique way... it's gonna be so lit! 🀯

Just when you think Placebo is all about those sick guitar riffs 🀟, they're actually venturing into theatre and bringing Brecht's dark comedy to life. I mean, who would've thought? The idea of Brian Molko's vocals adding that edgy, theatrical vibe to the play sounds like a winner 🎭. It's cool to see artists pushing boundaries like this. And can't deny that the themes of power, alienation, and decay are super relevant right now πŸŒͺ️. Brecht's work has always been about social commentary, so it's fitting they're tackling far-right movements with their production. Definitely looking forward to seeing how Placebo brings this dark comedy to life on stage 🎟️!

man this placebo gig is gonna be lit 🀩 like they're about to turn that rsc theatre into a rock concert venue lol but seriously its cool that they're using brecht's work to talk about the dangers of far right movements today feels super relevant and i'm down for seeing mark gatiss bring arturo ui to life on stage also what's up with the whole original score thing will it be like a metal opera or something cant wait to see how its all gonna come together in april 🎟️

I'M SO STOKED THAT PLACEBO IS TAKING ON THIS POWERFUL PLAY!!! IT'S SUCH A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY FOR THEM TO BRING THEIR MUSIC AND ENERGY TO THE THEATRE WORLD 🀩! I MEAN, BRECHTS WORK FEELS REALLY RELEVANT RIGHT NOW WITH ALL THE FAR-RIGHT MOVEMENTS GOING AROUND... IT'S LIKE THEY'RE SAYING, "HEY, WE KNOW YOU THINK YOU'RE TALKING, BUT WE'VE GOT SOMETHING TO SAY TOO πŸ˜’"! MARK GATISS AS ARTURO UI IS GONNA BE AMAZING, I CAN ALREADY IMAGINE HIM BRINGING THAT CHICAGO-STYLE MOGLIARITY TO THE ROLE 🀴. AND PLACEBO'S SCORE... OH MAN, I HOPE IT'S AS ELECTRIFYING AS THEIR LIVE SHOWS πŸ’₯!
