Westbound lanes of I-76 will be closed from Sunday until June 1 as part of a six-month project to repair the Market Street Bridge. The construction, valued at $148.9 million, is expected to take four years to complete.
During the closure period, drivers will have to exit at 30th Street and use Schuylkill Avenue to access ramps for I-76 West and I-676 East. Overnight closures will be suspended during holidays between December 21st and January 3rd.
The project involves major repairs to the bridge's deck, sidewalks, and river walls, as well as pavement work on Market Street. Concrete barriers and bicycle signals will be installed along the street, which is also expected to be closed to vehicles between August 2026 and October 2027.
Additionally, several other road closures are in place due to construction and maintenance projects. Germantown Avenue and areas around Logan Square Park will be closed to pedestrians and motorists starting this month, while the city's Department of Streets will be reconstructing curb ramps and sidewalks in preparation for the city's 250th anniversary celebration next year.
SEPTA is also set to remove embedded trolley tracks on Germantown Avenue between December 23rd and January 1st, forcing drivers to take alternative routes. Travelers are advised to slow down near construction zones, plan for extra time when driving, and check traffic conditions regularly updated on the 511PA website.
In related news, Market Street will also undergo repairs in 2026 and 2027, with a two-way bike lane being installed along with concrete barriers and bicycle signals.
