Violent clashes erupted in Lower Manhattan's Chinatown over the weekend as protesters clashed with police outside a parking garage where Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were reportedly stationed. The demonstrators, who claimed federal agents were inside planning enforcement action, took matters into their own hands by blocking one-way traffic with a massive pile of garbage on Centre Street.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos, with broken planters, overturned trash cans, and debris scattered throughout the area. "The police were down on Canal Street," said Lee Smith, who joined the protest after seeing news reports of the incident. "We've seen quite a bit of damage."
The NYPD confirmed that several protesters were taken into custody during the confrontation. However, officials from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) remained tight-lipped about their involvement in the enforcement action, refusing to comment on whether the agents had been blocked from leaving the garage or if an enforcement operation was underway at the time of the protest.

I feel bad for anyone who got hurt or trapped in that mess. On one hand, I get where these protesters are comin' from - they're fightin' against somethin' that's supposed to be about protectin' our communities, but if it gets violent... then what's the point of all this? 
We need some real solutions and not just protestin' for the sake of protestin'. Let's find a way to make a difference without hurtin' ourselves or others 
It's like they're not thinking about the bigger picture here... the police have to deal with the chaos, and meanwhile, no one knows if the agents were actually planning something or not. And what's with the garbage blockade on Centre Street? A big pile of trash isn't gonna stop anyone, but it's just a pretty pointless act of defiance. 
I get that people are upset about ICE's actions, but can't they find a more constructive way to express their concerns? 
But at the same time, violent clashes? Breaking planters and trash cans? That's just not cool. I mean, I get it, people are passionate about this issue, but you've got to find a way to express that without causing harm to others. The police situation does sound pretty intense too... like they were outgunned on Canal Street 
And what's up with the lack of info from ICE? You'd think they'd at least give some explanation for why they're showing up in Chinatown, but nope... just radio silence
