A violent altercation unfolded on the E train Saturday morning, leaving a 54-year-old Brooklyn man hospitalized with severe injuries. According to the Queens District Attorney's office, the incident began when a fellow passenger, identified as Johnny Wood, a 50-year-old from Brooklyn, refused to end a loud cellphone conversation.
The victim, who remains unnamed, reportedly asked Wood to stop talking loudly on his phone while standing at the center of the train waiting to depart. This request was met with hostility, prompting Wood to pull out a knife and attack the victim once in the ribcage area.
Witnesses describe the scene as chaotic, with authorities stating that Wood fled the train after the altercation, only to be later arrested in Brooklyn on Tuesday. The victim was taken to a local hospital where he is undergoing treatment for broken ribs, a stab wound, and an injury to his chest.
The Queens District Attorney's office has charged Wood with attempted murder, assault, and weapons offenses in connection with the incident. In a statement, DA Melinda Katz emphasized the importance of mass transit safety, saying "Every New Yorker knows how important it is to be able to travel on mass transit safely."
Wood was remanded back into custody by Queens Criminal Court Judge Sharifa Nasser-Cuellar and is set to appear in court again on Friday.
