Six great reads – best of 2025: Netflix's algorithm; bonding over the Beatles and the ascent of MrBeast

The Netflix algorithm has left an indelible mark on the film industry, churning out cookie-cutter movies that are designed to be easily consumable for our increasingly distracted audience. In a fascinating long read, Phil Hoad explores the rise of the algorithm movie and how it has altered the way we watch films.

Meanwhile, Jimmy Donaldson, aka MrBeast, is dominating YouTube with his generous acts of kindness and absurd stunts that have captured the hearts of over 400 million subscribers. Mark O'Connell delves into the secrets behind MrBeast's success, exploring what makes him tick and how he has become a cultural phenomenon.

In a more personal story, Esther Ghey shares her remarkable journey of forgiveness after the murder of her daughter Brianna, and how she has found solace in befriending one of the perpetrators' mothers. Simon Hattenstone sits down with Esther to discuss the complexities of human nature and the power of forgiveness.

For those looking for a more light-hearted read, John Harris recounts the story of how his autistic son James discovered his love for the Beatles, which has helped him find his voice and connect with others on a deeper level. The article is a heartwarming tribute to the power of music and its ability to bring people together.

Lastly, Hettie O'Brien uncovers an extraordinary tale of financial crime involving a wealthy lawyer who was trusted by his clients for decades. Her investigative journalism exposes the shocking truth behind a web of deceit that left millions of pounds out of pocket.

As we look back on 2025, it's clear that these stories showcase some of the most compelling and thought-provoking tales from the past year. Whether you're a fan of music, true crime, or just looking for inspiration, there's something here for everyone.

🤔 I'm so curious about MrBeast's success 🤑 he's got 400 million subscribers! How does he make that happen? Is it really all about being generous and doing crazy stunts? And what's with the algorithm movie thing? Does Netflix control our taste in films now? 😱 Like, can we even remember the last time we watched a movie just because it was good, not because of some fancy recommendation algorithm. 🎥💡

I'm so over this algorithm movie business 🤯. It's all about mass production and catering to our attention spans, not actually telling good stories anymore! I mean, have you seen some of these movies? They're like formulaic recipes with different ingredients, but the result is always the same: forgettable. Give me a break! Meanwhile, MrBeast is still dominating YouTube because he's got charisma and heart 💕. That's what we need more of in this industry – people who are willing to take risks and be themselves, not just churn out some bland, cookie-cutter content 🙅‍♂️. And can we talk about forgiveness for a sec? Esther Ghey's story is giving me all the feels ❤️. We should be celebrating her strength and courage, not just reading about it in an article 📰.

I'm all for the algorithm changing the film industry, but can't we have more original movies? 🤔 I mean, don't get me wrong, I love a good rom-com as much as the next person, but it's just so predictable now... On the other hand, MrBeast is literally changing the game on YouTube! 💸 His generosity and creativity are truly inspiring, even if it's not always easy to look away from his over-the-top stunts. 🎉 And that article about Esther Ghey finding solace in befriending her daughter's killer? I need to read more of that kind of story... 💔 As for John Harris's Beatles-fueled son James, isn't it amazing how music can bring people together and give them a voice? 🎶 Lastly, the financial crime investigation by Hettie O'Brien sounds like a real page-turner! 👮‍♀️ Can we get more of that kind of investigative journalism out there? 💬

can't believe how formulaic the whole streaming thing has become 🤯 these algorithm movies are literally just lazy cash-ins... and don't even get me started on mrbeast 🤑 like what's the point of all that fake generosity? is it just to get more views and ad revenue? 😒 meanwhile, real stories about people overcoming trauma and finding forgiveness or connecting through music... that's what I want to watch 💕

omg i cant even believe how much content is out there right now 🤯 it feels like every platform is churning out something new and i'm literally drowning in a sea of options 🌊 how do these creators keep coming up with stuff that resonates so deeply with us? for me its always about the stories behind the stories, you know, what makes someone tick or why they're so passionate about something ❤️ like esther's story, that's so powerful and inspiring

I gotta say, I'm so over these algorithm movies 🤯 they just feel like they're all mashed together with the same formula – explosions, romance, and a hero who saves the day. It's like Netflix is trying to cater to our attention spans or something. Give me a break! I'd rather watch some of MrBeast's stunts than sit through another generic action movie 🤪 on the other hand, Esther's story about forgiveness is really giving me all the feels 💔 it's amazing how one person can choose to forgive and move forward after such a tragedy.

And John Harris's article about his autistic son finding solace in music? Absolutely beautiful ❤️ my heart swelled reading that. It just goes to show that music has this way of bringing people together, you know?

As for the financial crime story, ugh 🤑 how could someone be so reckless and deceitful? I mean, I'm glad Hettie O'Brien did her investigative journalism to expose the truth, but it's just so sad that millions of pounds were lost out.

Anyway, 2025 was definitely a wild ride 🎢. Can't wait to see what's in store for next year!

man i was watching this crazy video on youtube the other day where mrbeast bought a whole island 🌴🏝️ and gave it away to random people... like who does that?! 😂 meanwhile, have you tried that new avocado toast place downtown? their bread is literally so good 🍞👌

omg I'm literally sobbing thinking about Esther's story 🤯 it's like my heart is shattered into a million pieces watching her share her daughter Brianna's tragic passing and how she found the strength to forgive... I mean I've struggled with anxiety and depression myself and seeing someone go through something so devastatingly beautiful (yes, forgiveness can be a work of art) has me questioning everything about life.
