Bridget Jones, Britain's beloved and hapless rom-com heroine, has been immortalized with a life-size bronze statue in the heart of London, Leicester Square. The 3D Eye studio responsible for the artwork described the scene as "fine" and said that sculpting in clay was necessary to achieve Bridget's signature look.
The statue depicts Bridget clutching her diary and pen, with a creased miniskirt and gaping cardigan, and weighs in at an impressive 31 stone β all of which is apparently intentional. Actress Sally Phillips confirmed that Bridget has no intention of losing any weight, saying "No intention of losing any weight" to the camera.
The unveiling of the statue was attended by several cast members from the latest Bridget Jones film, including RenΓ©e Zellweger, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Leo Woodall. Director Michael Morris expressed hope that a fifth film might follow in the series.
Fielding credits Bridget's enduring appeal to an escalating crisis of confidence among young people, particularly with regards to body image and self-acceptance. She believes that Bridget provides a much-needed antidote to the pressure to present a perfect online persona, saying "That very British quality of kindness, support for your friends... makes her relatable to people."
The novel's creator, Helen Fielding, is also keen to point out the importance of investing in arts and culture. She believes that there needs to be more funding distributed throughout the country, rather than concentrated in London. She draws a comparison with JK Rowling, whose creation of Harry Potter was immortalized in Leicester Square.
The new statue has been met with widespread acclaim from fans and critics alike. As Fielding noted, "I think we know it's not Nelson's column... But nevertheless, it is quite a lovely thing that Bridget means something in this country."
