Some fans whistle as Lionel Messi’s name is announced as Paris Saint-Germain’s season hits new low | CNN

Fans' Disdain for Messi Exposes PSG's Fractured Identity

The Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) faithful have turned against their star player Lionel Messi, whistling his name during the announcement of the starting lineup at the Parc des Princes. The display of disdain speaks to the team's dismal season, which has hit new depths with a 1-0 loss to Lyon.

The game, PSG's second straight home defeat, was a bleak reflection of the team's struggles under pressure. Despite having Messi on board, who has contributed 34 goals in all competitions this season, PSG failed to threaten the visiting goal for extended periods. The only goal of the night came from Bradley Barcola in the second half.

PSG's situation is precarious, with Lens and Marseille closing the gap at the top of Ligue 1. The team is now just six points behind its rivals, leaving the domestic title fight far from secure.

The reaction of fans on Sunday starkly contrasts with the adoration Messi received during his recent return to Argentina for friendlies against Panama and Curaçao. It highlights a disconnect between the expectations surrounding Messi's arrival at PSG – that he would be the missing piece to unlock the Champions League title – and the team's actual performance.

Coach Christophe Galtier refused to attribute the team's failures solely to Messi, stating that both players need to do their jobs. The manager acknowledged that some may have expected too much from Messi and Mbappé in difficult situations.

As PSG prepares for a crucial week of matches against an unbeaten Nice side and then hosting Lens at home, questions will remain about the team's ability to rally behind its star player. With the domestic title slipping further away, it remains to be seen if the PSG faithful will forgive Messi for his shortcomings on the pitch.

omg can you believe this?? 😒 fans are turning on messi and it's not even fair 🙄 he's been doing a solid job for like 2 years now but still gets booed when he walks out of the locker room 🤦‍♂️ gotta feel for him, mbappe too, they're being asked to do way too much with this team. coach galtier is right tho, both players need to step up their game 💪 psg's in a tough spot, gonna be interesting to see if they can pull it together 🤔

😒 I'm kinda surprised at this backlash against Messi though... I mean, 34 goals in a season is no joke! 🤯 Still, gotta give credit to Lyon - they played some solid defense that night 😅. But PSg's fans gotta be fair and remember it's not all on Messi's shoulders (no offense, M8 😉). Galtier's right too, both players need to step up their game if they wanna make a push for the title 🎯. The question is, will PSG's fans come around once they see some improvement? 🤔

🤔 I'm not surprised to see fans turning against Messi, it's like they forgot he's still human and can have bad games too 🤷‍♂️. The fact that PSG is struggling with their own identity is a bigger issue than just one player. It's like they're blaming everyone else for their problems, even their superstar signing. 😒

I think Galtier's explanation about both players needing to step up is spot on 💡, but it's also clear that Messi wasn't brought in to be the sole savior of the team. He was supposed to be part of a bigger plan, not just a single player trying to carry the load alone 🏃‍♂️.

It's interesting that fans were so adoring towards him when he played for Argentina recently 🇦🇷... maybe they're holding on to a different reality than what's happening at PSG right now 🤯. Only time will tell if the PSG faithful will forgive Messi for his off days, but for now, it's hard not to feel like the team is stuck in limbo ⏳️.

I feel like PSG has a major identity crisis right now 🤔... they got this superstar in Lionel Messi but he's not making enough of an impact? Meanwhile, Lens and Marseille are killing it 😒. The fans are super upset and rightly so - Messi isn't delivering when it matters most. Maybe Coach Galtier needs to rethink his gameplan or something? 💡 This team can't just rely on one player to save them all the time... gotta get some other players stepping up their game too! 🔥

OMG this is crazy 🤯! I feel bad for Messi tho, he's been doing his best with the team and still managing to score 34 goals this season 🙌! The fans need to chill out a bit, it's one game and PSG will bounce back 💪. Coach Galtier is right though, both players gotta step up their game in these high-pressure matches 🤝. Can't wait for the next match against Nice, gonna be lit 🔥!

Ugh 🤦‍♂️, I'm telling ya, this is what happens when you put all your eggs in one basket, right? Like with Messi at PSG... people were expecting him to single-handedly carry the team to Champions League glory and now that they're not getting it, everyone's turning on him 😒. It's like the fans are saying "Sorry, Leo, we knew this was a long shot" 🤷‍♂️. And what's with all these injuries? 🤕 First Mbappé, now Barcola... can't a team just get some luck for once?! 🍀

OMG I feel like this is happening in our school too 🤯 - everyone's expectations are super high and when we don't meet them, people get frustrated 💔. It's not just Messi either, PSG needs to work together as a team because Mbappé's also not performing great 🙅‍♂️. I mean, I love watching him play but even he can't make up for the whole team's weakness 😩. Coach Galtier is right though, some people do expect too much from our players and that's not fair ⚠️. It's gonna be interesting to see how PSG handles this crisis 💡

I just got back from the most random road trip with friends and we saw this adorable little café that served the most epic waffles 🍳😋. I'm talking crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, drizzled with chocolate and strawberries... my. god. Anyway, it made me think of how much food is just like a team sport – you gotta have the right players (ingredients) working together to create something amazing 😂. PSG's struggles remind me of when I tried to make pancakes and ended up with burnt offerings 🥞👀. But hey, even burnt pancakes can still be delicious if you add enough maple syrup!

u know what's crazy 🤯? i was just thinking of trying out that new recipe for chicken stir-fry last night and now i'm like 2 hours late for my favorite cooking show 🕰️, can't believe i spaced out! anyway back to messi, gotta feel for the dude 🤷‍♂️. seems like psg is having a major identity crisis and it's not just about one player 🤔. lens and marseille are heating up and now psg is 6 points behind? 😬 that's like, a whole different season right there ⚽️ gotta watch out for nice next week 👀

I'm seeing some weird stuff goin down with PSG fans lately 🤔... I mean, Lionel Messi is an amazing player and all, but it's like they're expectin' him to single-handedly fix their team's problems ⚽️. Newsflash: no one's that good! 😂 They need to work together as a squad, not just rely on Messi's greatness.

And what's with this "disdain" thing? Whistlin' his name during the lineup announcement? That's just mean 🤕. I get it, the team's had some tough losses lately, but booing their star player ain't gonna solve nothin'. It's like they're forgettin' he's human too 🙏.

PSG needs to regroup and focus on workin' together if they wanna make a comeback 💪... and hopefully, Messi'll be the one doin' his job without all the pressure 😬.

omg this is crazy 🤯! i mean i get why ppl are disappointed with psg's performance but a whole bunch of fans whistling messi's name at home? that's just harsh 😒. i think galtier is right tho, both messi and mbappe need to step up their game if they wanna win anything this season. it's not all on messi's shoulders 🤷‍♂️.

i've been meaning to try out some new recipes in the kitchen, maybe something with some argentine flavors to pay homage to messi's heritage 🍴👌

I'm so down with the PSG fans right now 😂 they're showing their frustration & disappointment with the team's performance, especially when it comes to beating teams like Lyon at home 🤦‍♂️. I mean, you can't blame them, 1-0 losses aren't exactly something to brag about, especially when you've got Messi on board 🤔. But what's crazy is that fans were super hyped for his return from Argentina & now they're just so meh 😐. It's like, Messi was expecting to lead PSG to the Champions League title or something, but it's not that simple 💪. The team needs to step up their game & get those 6 points back before it's too late 🕰️... fingers crossed for PSG! 👍
