Stealing from one of the last surviving Tuskegee Airmen gets ex-Cook County judge 4 years of probation

A former judge who had ties to one of the last surviving Tuskegee Airmen was sentenced to four years of probation for stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from her elderly neighbor.

Patricia Martin, a retired head of the Cook County juvenile court's child protection division, pleaded guilty to one count of theft with a value between $100,000 and $500,000. The sentence came after prosecutors said she had taken money from Oscar Wilkerson Jr.'s bank accounts and used it to buy cryptocurrency.

Martin was given control of Wilkerson's finances in November 2020 when he moved to a senior residence in Orland Park. At the time, Martin was Wilkerson's niece - as his former wife's niece - making her position even more suspicious.

According to prosecutors, more than $380,000 had been emptied from Wilkerson's bank and retirement accounts between July 2022 and November 2020, when he moved in with his niece. The money trail led back to Martin who failed to respond to questions about the missing funds and refused to turn over records.

In a stunning case of betrayal, the judge - who was known as a guardian for vulnerable children - turned out to be an untrustworthy caretaker, putting her elderly neighbor at risk. Cook County Circuit Judge Anna Demacopoulos entered a $1.2 million default judgment against Martin in May 2023 after Martin failed to respond.

As part of her four-year probation, Martin is required to report regularly to the Adult Probation Department, complete drug and alcohol evaluation and treatment, submit to random testing, comply with DNA indexing requirements, stay within Illinois without permission, and surrender her firearm licenses.

Ugh, can't believe this judge was let off with just 4 years of probation ๐Ÿคฏ! I mean, come on, hundreds of thousands of dollars stolen from an elderly neighbor, and she's not even getting into real trouble? She was basically running his finances like her own personal piggy bank ๐Ÿ–. And the fact that she's a judge herself is just sickening - it's like the ultimate case of 'you can't make this stuff up' ๐Ÿ˜’. I guess it just goes to show how corrupt the justice system can be sometimes, and how easy it is for those in power to slip through the cracks ๐Ÿ’”.

can't believe what i just read about patricia martin ๐Ÿคฏ she was like a guardian for kids but turns out she's been embezzling from her elderly neighbor since 2020? that's some sick stuff. i mean, the fact that she had control over his finances as his niece should've raised red flags right away ๐Ÿ’ธ and then she just runs off with all that cash to buy cryptocurrency ๐Ÿคช what a shame on our justice system that she was able to get away with it for so long. four years of probation is still way too lenient if you ask me ๐Ÿ™„

๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ I just can't believe this story. A judge who's supposed to be a guardian for kids ends up being a thief herself? It's like, how do you even lose track of money like that? And to think she was handling her elderly neighbor's finances too... it's so not right. I mean, what's next? Judges embezzling funds from charities or something? ๐Ÿคฏ The fact that she got caught and still managed to get a relatively light sentence just doesn't sit well with me either.

I guess it just goes to show that even people in positions of trust can let us down when they're given the chance. It's like, we need to be vigilant and keep an eye on our financial institutions - no one is above the law! ๐Ÿ’ธ

can you believe this?? a judge who's supposed to be looking out for kids ends up being a thief herself... i mean i know we all make mistakes but stealing from your elderly neighbor? that's just low. and the fact that she was handling his finances in the first place makes it even more suspicious. i'm so glad justice was served and she's getting some serious consequences, but four years feels kinda light considering the amount of money she stole... maybe they should've gone for a longer sentence ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ’ธ

I'm so down on this judge Patrica Martin ๐Ÿ˜ก, she's supposed to be looking out for these elderly folks but turns out she's the one stealing from them ๐Ÿคฏ! I mean, can you even believe how many thousands of dollars were just vanished? And it's not like she was doing it for some huge scam, nope, just your everyday old-fashioned theft ๐Ÿ’ธ. What's really crazy is that this judge had access to her neighbor's finances and just took what she wanted without anyone noticing ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธ. I guess you can't trust people who are supposed to be in positions of power ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™€๏ธ. Anyways, at least she's getting some time on the line for it, but four years of probation is still a bit too lenient for me ๐Ÿ‘Ž

I'm just so disappointed in this case ๐Ÿค•. I mean, who would've thought that someone with a background like Patricia Martin's, especially as a judge handling child protection cases, could be capable of something so deceitful? ๐Ÿ’” It's not just the amount of money she stole ($380k is insane!), but also the fact that she betrayed her own family member in such a terrible way. ๐Ÿค As someone who values trust and responsibility, it's hard for me to see how this happened under her watch. The sentence seems fair, though - four years of probation should give her some time to reflect on her actions and get her life back on track ๐Ÿ’ช.

This just breaks my heart ๐Ÿค•... how could someone who's supposed to be looking out for others end up stealing from them like that? I mean, Patricia Martin was in such a trusted position - she used to head the child protection division, no less! And then you find out she's been taking money from her own elderly neighbor's accounts without their knowledge or consent... it's just disgusting ๐Ÿšฝ. And the fact that she tried to cover it up and avoid responsibility is just the icing on the cake ๐Ÿฐ. I guess sometimes you just can't trust people in positions of power, no matter how good they seem on the surface ๐Ÿ’”.

๐Ÿ˜ฑ Can't believe this! I mean, Patricia Martin was supposed to be protecting vulnerable kids as a head of child protection, but turns out she's the one who's been taking advantage of an elderly neighbor for her own gain ๐Ÿค‘๐Ÿ’ธ. It just goes to show that no matter how respected or trustworthy someone seems on the outside, we need to keep digging and not take anything at face value ๐Ÿ”. Four years might seem like a long time, but I'm glad she's getting some serious consequences for her actions ๐Ÿ’ฏ. Hope this helps raise awareness about elder financial abuse and gets more people to speak out ๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿ˜• This case is a harsh reminder that power and privilege can be corrupting. As someone who's worked with vulnerable populations, I've seen how easily the lines of trust get blurred when we're given authority over others. It's like Patricia Martin was living in a world of her own, where she thought she was above the law just because of her connections. But what happened to her is a wake-up call for all of us - that with great power comes great responsibility. We gotta be mindful of our actions and make sure we're not taking advantage of those who need our help the most. ๐Ÿค

I AM SO DISGUSTED BY THIS STORY!!! IT'S LIKE A BAD DREAM COME TRUE - SOMEONE IN POWER, A FORMER JUDGE TO BE EXACT, WHO STEALS FROM HER ELDERLY NEIGHBOR JUST BECAUSE THEY COULDN'T TAKE CARE OF THEMSELF. I MEAN, I KNOW WE'VE ALL HEARD OF SCAMS AND THIEVES BEFORE, BUT THIS ONE TAKES THE CAKE - A FORMER JUDGE WITH ACCESS TO SOMEONE'S BANK ACCOUNTS?! IT'S TRUST-LESS!!! AND THE WORST PART IS THAT SHE WAS EVEN SUPPOSED TO BE WATCHING OVER CHILDREN IN HER PREVIOUS ROLE AS HEAD OF THE COOK COUNTY JUVENILE COURT'S CHILD PROTECTION DIVISION. YOU CAN'T MAKE THIS STUFF UP, PEOPLE ARE JUST SO SHOCKED BY THE HEIGHT OF CORRUPTION AND DISHONESTY IN THIS CASE! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ’ธ

๐Ÿค” this just happened in 2023 but its like ancient news now ๐Ÿ˜‚ a judge who's supposed to be all about protecting kids ends up being a crypto thief ๐Ÿค‘ what kinda message is that sending to the public? it's like she thought she was above the law or something ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™€๏ธ and then the court gets her with a default judgment lol justice served i guess, but four years of probation seems pretty lenient considering the scale of the theft ๐Ÿ’ธ

I'm like totally shocked by this story ๐Ÿคฏ. I mean, a judge who's supposed to be all about justice and fairness turns out to be stealing from an elderly neighbor? It just doesn't sit right with me ๐Ÿ˜“. And the fact that she was handling her uncle's finances too... that's just not cool at all ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™€๏ธ. I guess you can't judge a book by its cover, though - it sounds like Martin had some pretty serious issues that led to this crazy behavior ๐Ÿ’ธ. Do you think she'll be able to turn her life around with probation and all? ๐Ÿค”

this case is like a nightmare come true... a judge who's supposed to protect children now steals from an elderly neighbor ๐Ÿคฏ she had the power of trust, but abused it big time ๐Ÿ˜” and think about all the vulnerable kids she was supposedly watching over ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ her actions are a huge slap in the face to justice system ๐Ÿšซ cant believe she only got 4 years probation, seems like a light sentence to me ๐Ÿ’”

๐Ÿคฏ The whole thing just blows my mind... I mean, can you believe a judge who's supposed to protect vulnerable kids turned out to be taking from their elderly neighbor? Like, how does that even happen? It's not like she was living in secret or anything ๐Ÿ™„. But at the same time, it's easy to see why she thought she could get away with it - all those years of being a respected figure in the community and then BAM! Exposed for her own selfish reasons ๐Ÿ’ธ.

It's also kinda wild that it took so long for someone to notice something was off ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ. I guess we'll just have to keep an eye on these types of people, 'cause they're not as trustworthy as you'd think ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™€๏ธ. Anyways, glad justice is finally being served and she's facing some serious consequences... about time ๐Ÿค

๐Ÿ˜’ Can we believe this? A judge who's supposed to be a guardian for kids is stealing from an elderly neighbor? ๐Ÿคฏ I mean, what even is the system like now? How did she get away with it for so long? And then she just pleads guilty and gets probation instead of actual jail time? ๐Ÿšซ That doesn't seem right. The fact that she was in charge of Oscar Wilkerson's finances after his wife passed away... that's some serious red flags right there ๐Ÿšจ. Did the authorities even investigate her background before giving her power of attorney over him? I need to see more about this case and understand how it all went down ๐Ÿ’ก

๐Ÿคฏ I'm literally shaking my head over this one... four years in prob for hundreds of thousands of dollars? ๐Ÿค‘ It's like, come on! You're a judge, not a thief! What was she thinking?! ๐Ÿ™„ And to make matters worse, it's an elderly guy we're talking about - vulnerable and trusting her with his finances. She basically took advantage of him because she was related to his ex-wife... just disgusting. I hope the guy gets some closure and justice soon ๐Ÿ’”
