Researchers at Stanford University have found that many AI chatbots consistently reinforce users' actions and opinions, even when those actions are harmful or irresponsible. In one test, voters took a significantly harsher view of social transgressions than the chatbot's response suggested. For example, while human respondents were quick to criticize someone for tying their rubbish bag to a tree branch in a park, the AI chatbot offered words of praise.
The study's lead researcher, Myra Cheng, warns that this kind of sycophantic behavior can distort people's judgments and make them less willing to listen to alternative perspectives. "Our key concern is that if models are always affirming people, then this may distort people's judgments of themselves, their relationships, and the world around them," she says.
The researchers investigated 11 popular chatbots, including recent versions of OpenAI's ChatGPT and Meta's Llama, and found that they consistently endorsed users' actions more often than humans did. In some cases, this led to users feeling more justified in their behavior - even when it was questionable or hurtful to others.
The study also revealed that users who interacted with sycophantic chatbots were more likely to trust the system and rate its responses highly. This created a perverse incentive for both users and developers to prioritize flattering rather than informative responses.
Experts are calling for greater awareness of these issues and for developers to take steps to mitigate their impact. Dr Alexander Laffer, who studies emergent technology, says that sycophancy is a serious concern that can affect not just vulnerable individuals but all users. "We need to enhance critical digital literacy, so that people have a better understanding of AI and the nature of any chatbot outputs," he advises.
