Target workers and shoppers slam company’s new forced greeting policy: ‘Nothing says corporate joy like a mandatory smile’

Target's New Policy Sparks Outrage Over Mandatory Smiles: "Nothing Says Corporate Joy Like a Forced Greeting"

A recent initiative by retail giant Target has left employees and customers alike scratching their heads. The company's new program, dubbed 10-4, is forcing staff to engage with customers in a more overtly friendly manner, including smiling, making eye contact, waving, and using "friendly, approachable, and welcoming" body language.

Employees within 10 feet of a customer are now required to greet them personally and initiate a warm interaction, while those within four feet must do the same. The idea behind the program is to elevate the shopping experience for patrons and make them feel truly appreciated, but many have taken to social media to express their discontent.

"It's just so forced," said one Reddit user who claims to be a Target employee. "Who the f--k is waving at guests? I would find that creepy." Another worker joked that the person responsible for implementing the policy must be an alien and should be investigated by US authorities.

Customers have also taken to sharing their outrage on social media, with many expressing their desire to be left alone while shopping. "I give you permission to not look at me and smile," one user wrote. Others have quipped about maintaining a safe distance from employees, saying they'll stay 11 feet away if that's what it takes.

While Target's new policy is similar to those implemented by other major retailers like Walmart and Disney, which also require employees to make eye contact with customers at certain distances, the company's approach has struck a chord of annoyance among staff and patrons alike. As one worker put it, "Nothing says corporate joy like a mandatory smile – let alone a full-on greeting."

😞 I feel you guys 🤷‍♀️...I mean, who wants to be forced into smiling at strangers? 🙃 It's all about personal space, right? And I can totally see how waving at people from 10 feet away would be creepy 🚫. I'd rather shop alone than have some employee staring at me with a fake smile 😒. What's next, mandatory hugs and high-fives? 🤗😂 Target needs to rethink this policy ASAP 💪

I'm telling you, this is just another example of them watching us 🕵️‍♀️. Like, what's the real motive behind making employees wave at customers? Is it really about creating a better shopping experience or is it something more sinister? I mean, think about it - we're already bombarded with advertisements and propaganda everywhere we go, so why do they need to make us physically greet each other in stores too?

And don't even get me started on the four-foot rule 🤔. That's just creepy. It's like they're trying to monitor our every move and dictate how we interact with each other. I swear, it's all about control. They want to know exactly what we're thinking and feeling, so they can tailor their marketing strategies accordingly.

I'm not buying it 😒. Something fishy is going on here, mark my words!

I mean, come on... 10-4 is just so overboard 🙄. I get it, Target wants to create a good shopping experience for their customers, but do they really need to force employees to be super friendly and make them feel uncomfortable? 😒 I've been to Target before, I don't mind smiling at the cashier or whatever, but waving and making eye contact from 4 feet away is just too much 🤯. And what's with the body language thingy? Can't they just chill? 😊 It's like, we're not in a sales pitch, you know? Just sell us our stuff already! 🛍️

omg this is so annoying i went to target yesterday and this employee was waving at me from across the store like what even lol i just wanted my fave jeans and dont need some forced cheer 🤣 i get that they wanna make customers happy but come on can't they just leave us alone 😒

Ugh, this 10-4 policy is just so annoying 🙄... I mean, who thought forcing employees to be overly friendly was a good idea? It's like they're trying to create some sort of corporate happiness robot. Newsflash: people are tired of being treated like robots in stores too 😒. And what's up with the smile requirement? Like, can't we just have a chill vibe in retail for once? 🤷‍♀️ I'm more likely to feel appreciated if an employee is actually listening to me and helping me find something, not just waving at me from across the store. It's all about creating a safe space, right? But this policy just feels like it's trying to control people's emotions instead of respecting them 🙅‍♂️... anyway, I hope they reconsider their approach before more people freak out on social media 📱

Umm yeah so like I'm not surprised about this Target policy lol idk what kind of research they did but it sounds super awkward having to wave at ppl all the time i mean i love shopping too but come on can't we just chill for a sec? 🙄 and btw did u know my aunt used to work at Walmart and she said the same thing about them wanting u to make eye contact like who cares lol anyway I think this policy is kinda funny cuz its so extra and also idk if Target realizes that people will be all annoyed on social media but honestly its just another day in corporate land 😂

I mean, I get what Target is tryin' to do - make you feel all warm and fuzzy in the store 🤗. But honestly, it's just too much. I don't want some stranger wavin' at me while I'm tryin' to grab some cereal, you know? It's like they're forgettin' that not everyone's as chill about meetin' new people. And what's up with the 10-4 policy? It sounds like somethin' out of a bad sci-fi movie 🚀. Can't they just leave us alone and let us work our jobs without all this extra stress? I'd take a chill pill and be done with it 💆‍♀️

I think this is just another example of how companies are trying to create this fake "customer experience" vibe that doesn't actually work 🤯. Like, who doesn't want to be left alone to shop in peace? It's all about personal space and being able to enjoy the shopping experience without some creepy employee waving at you or forcing a smile 😒. And what's with the 10-4 program anyway? It sounds like a joke from a bad sitcom 🤣. Target is just trying to make some cash by making their employees act like they're working in a Disney store or something 💸. Newsflash: it's not gonna work! People will still find ways to avoid eye contact and pretend to be interested in the products...and honestly, who can blame 'em? 😴

I mean, I get what Target is trying to do – make shopping a more enjoyable experience for customers – but forcing employees to be overly friendly all the time can come across as pretty awkward 😒. Like, who doesn't just want to browse in peace without being greeted and wowed with a smile? 🤗 And what's with the distance thing? Four feet? That's like, totally invading personal space 🚫. I'm with the employees who are saying this is all just too much – it's like they're trapped in some kinda corporate joy factory 😅. Maybe instead of trying to force smiles, Target could focus on making shopping more convenient and comfortable for everyone? 🛍️💺

omg i feel so bad for these target employees 🤗😒 they're literally being forced to be overly friendly 24/7? that's just too much! i get what the company is trying to do, but aww man can't we just have a chill vibe in stores like normal? 🤷‍♀️ and waving at customers? that's just weird 😂 i think target might need to rethink this policy ASAP... or maybe just offer some training on how to make people feel welcome without being so... forced 💁‍♀️💕

omg i totally get why ppl are mad about dis new policy 😂🙄 like who does target think its gonna make a diff if they just make u smile at customers from afar?? its all 2 much for me to deal with already 🤯 and what really gets me is when ppl say its 2 increase customer satisfaction but idk, it jus feels like dis is just an excuse 4 them 2 try 2 get more profit outta us 💸👀

omg i feel u guys 👀 target is literally taking corporate happiness to a whole new level 🤣 i mean i get what they're trying to do but like, can't they just chill? 😒 waving at customers while they shop for toilet paper? no thanks 🚽. and what's up with the 10ft and 4ft rule? it's just weird 🙃. i'd rather not be stared down by an employee than smile and wave back lol 😂. i guess some ppl might appreciate the extra customer service but like, can't we just have a chill shopping experience too? 🛍️👌

I feel so bad for these Target employees 🤕. Like, I get that they want to make customers happy, but do they really need to be forced into fake smiles and awkward hellos? It's just so draining 😩. And can you blame them if they think it's creepy when coworkers are waving at them? 👀 I mean, personal space is a thing, right? 🤷‍♀️ It's weird that Target would implement such a policy, but I guess it's not like we're living in some dystopian novel where corporate happiness is the only thing that matters... yet 😬.

🤯 just saw this news about Target's new policy forcing employees to give customers smiles and waves from 4ft away its literally creepy who needs that much personal space anyway i cant imagine being in a store with someone staring at me all day and then expecting me to say hi back lol and what if you dont feel like talking to someone just leave them alone is that too much to ask? 🙄

omg I can totes understand why people are mad about this 😩... like who wants to be greeted by an employee when you just wanna chill in the store? 🛍️ and what's up with the waving tho? 🤹‍♀️ it just feels so... forced 🙄. I mean, I get that Target wants to make customers feel welcome and all, but can't they just find a way to do that without being like "Hey, look at me! I'm here to make you smile!" 😂 it's just too much. And honestly, who needs all those rules about how close or far away employees have to be from customers? 🤯 just let people shop in peace, ya know? 💁‍♀️
