The Artful Dodger review – buckle up, bozos! TV's most breathless Dickens drama is back

Disney+ has released another installment of its raucous adaptation of Charles Dickens' 'Oliver Twist', dubbed 'The Artful Dodger'. The series follows the titular character, Jack Dawkins (Thomas Brodie-Sangster), a young surgeon turned convict, as he tries to evade capture. Dawkins's latest predicament is complicated by his former mentor, Norbert Fagin (David Thewlis), who has escaped from prison and is now working with him in the Australian penal colony of Port Victory.

In this second series, the stakes are higher as Dawkins becomes embroiled in a complex web of theft and deception. His budding romance with Lady Belle Fox (Maia Mitchell) adds an extra layer of tension to his already precarious situation. However, just as it seems like Dawkins has finally found a sense of stability, Inspector Boxer (Luke Bracey) appears on the scene, determined to bring him to justice.

The pace of this series is undoubtedly frenetic, with chase sequences and violent confrontations becoming increasingly common. While this may appeal to fans of action-packed dramas, it comes at the cost of emotional depth. The relationships between Dawkins and Fagin are reduced to shallow banter and the nuanced character development that made them so compelling in the first series is now all but forgotten.

Ultimately, 'The Artful Dodger' feels like a rehashing of the same plot points from its predecessor. While it has its moments, particularly when the focus is on Dawkins's relationships with Fagin and Belle, the overall effect is one of tiredness and desperation. With so much emphasis placed on high-octane action sequences, it's hard to muster up any enthusiasm for what promises to be a season filled with more of the same.

It would have been better if the writers had taken a step back and re-evaluated the core themes of 'Oliver Twist', particularly the complex relationships between the characters. Instead, they seem content to rely on familiar tropes and shallow character development. As Fagin himself laments at one point, it's clear that Dawkins and his companions are in for a world of hurt – but not necessarily in a good way.

Despite its flaws, 'The Artful Dodger' remains a compelling watch for fans of Dickensian drama and those who enjoy a good heist. However, those hoping for something more substantial may find themselves left feeling disappointed and frustrated.

Disney+ is really milking the 'Oliver Twist' franchise 🤑. I mean, I'm all for some high-octane action sequences, but come on, can't they explore some deeper themes like social commentary or character development? It feels like they're just churning out the same old formula and calling it a new installment 📺. And don't even get me started on how rushed the whole thing feels - it's like they're trying to cram in as much excitement as possible without stopping to breathe 👀. I'd have loved to see some more nuance and complexity in the characters, especially Dawkins' relationships with Fagin and Belle 🤔. But hey, if you're into mindless action flicks, then 'The Artful Dodger' is probably your thing 🔥.

Ugh, Disney+ is just killing it with these cheap adaptations 🤯. I mean, 'The Artful Dodger' is like a rehashing of the same plot points from its predecessor - what's the point? It's like they took all the excitement and energy from the first series and replaced it with shallow banter and a bunch of action-packed sequences that barely scratch the surface of the characters. I get it, some fans might be stoked for more heist stuff, but come on, can't we get something more substantial? 🤔 The themes of 'Oliver Twist' are so much deeper than just a convoluted web of theft and deception...

You know what's wild? I was watching this crazy food challenge video the other day where people are eating these ridiculously spicy wings in like 10 minutes flat 🤯 And it made me think, have you ever tried making your own hot sauce from scratch? It's actually pretty easy and you can customize the heat level to your liking. I'm thinking of giving it a shot this weekend. Do you guys have any favorite recipes for spicy sauces?

🤔 I gotta say, I'm kinda underwhelmed by this new Disney+ series 'The Artful Dodger'. It feels like they're rehashing the same old plot points from its predecessor without adding much depth or complexity. The action sequences are fun, I'll give it that, but when you take away the emotional connections between characters, it's just not as engaging.

I mean, who wants to watch a series about a guy trying to evade capture all day? It starts to feel like Groundhog Day with more punches flying around. And don't even get me started on how they handled Fagin's character – it's like they took the cool, complex guy from the first series and turned him into some wisecracking sidekick.

Overall, I'd say it's a decent watch if you're a die-hard Dickens fan or enjoy action-packed dramas. But for anyone looking for something with substance, 'The Artful Dodger' might be a bit of a letdown 📺

I gotta say, I'm kinda underwhelmed by this latest Disney+ installment of 'Oliver Twist'. They're playing it way too safe with the plot twists and character development 🤔. It's all about high-octane action and chase sequences now, which is cool for a few eps but gets old fast ⏰. I mean, what happened to the depth and complexity that made this story great in the first place? The characters feel like caricatures of themselves at this point – shallow banter and not much more 🤷‍♂️.

I think they're missing the mark by relying too heavily on familiar tropes instead of exploring the core themes of the original. It's just rehashing the same old stuff, you know? 😐. I mean, I still enjoy a good heist drama, but this one feels like it's phoning it in 📚. Maybe they'll step up their game next season, but for now, it's just another Disney+ series that's more hype than substance 💔

I just finished binge-watching the new Disney+ series on Oliver Twist and I gotta say, it's kinda meh 🤔. The Artful Dodger is like that one essay question in History class - you know, the one where they just mash up a bunch of old ideas and hope for the best? 📚 It gets the job done but you can't help feeling like something's missing.

I loved how they adapted Fagin's character from the original book, but then they kinda... forgot about him in this series. 😐 Norbert Fagin's like the ultimate plot twist, but instead of exploring his complexities, they just use him as a sidekick. And don't even get me started on Lady Belle Fox - she's like the forgotten cousin at the family reunion 🤪.

The action scenes are pretty lit 🔥, I'll give it that, but sometimes it feels like they're more focused on the explosions and chases than actually developing the characters. It's like they took all the drama from the first series and just... replaced it with more of the same stuff 😴.

All in all, if you're a die-hard Dickens fan or just love a good heist, The Artful Dodger is still worth checking out 🤑. Just don't go in expecting anything too deep or meaningful, 'kay? 👍

I just finished watching the new series on Disney+ 🤔 and I gotta say, it's like they're playing with the same old cards every time 🃏. The Artful Dodger is all about high-octane action and chase scenes, but for me, that comes at the expense of real character development 👥. It feels like we're just seeing the same old tricks from Jack Dawkins again, instead of actually learning anything new about him 🤷‍♂️.

I mean, I love a good heist as much as the next guy, but can't they just take some time to really explore what makes Fagin tick? He's such a great character in the original story, and here it feels like we're just scratching the surface 💡. The romance between Dawkins and Belle is nice, but it gets lost in all the chaos 🌪️.

Overall, I'd say The Artful Dodger is a solid watch for fans of the genre, but if you're looking for something with some real substance, you might be left feeling a little empty 🤮.

🤔 I'm so over this new series already! I mean, can't they just stick with what made the first one work? The action scenes are cool and all, but it's like they forgot that there's a story to be told too. Dawkins is such a great character, I love how he's got his own moral compass and stuff, but now he's just some generic "wronged by life" kid trying to survive. And what's up with Fagin? He used to be so complex and interesting, but now he's just some one-dimensional villain. The chemistry between Dawkins and Belle is cool, I guess, but it gets lost in all the chase sequences and gunfire. 🎥 I mean, can't they just focus on character development for once? 🤷‍♂️

🤔 this new series is kinda meh... i mean, it's got all the ingredients to be a wild ride but it ends up feeling like just another action-packed drama with shallow characters 🚫 don't get me wrong, tom brodie-sangster is still pretty cool as oliver twist 👊 but the rest of the cast feels kinda one-dimensional to me 😐 and can we please bring back some of that nuance from the first series? 🤷‍♀️

I feel you, watching these adaptations can be so exhausting 🤯 the action scenes are like, yay excitement but then when it's all said and done I'm left thinking about how shallow some of the character development is 😔 especially with oliver twist, i get why they wanna make it more thrilling but can't we just have a deeper look at the relationships between the characters too? 🤷‍♀️ at least Fagin's struggles are relatable, and Belle's got some amazing moments too 💕
