The Chilling True Story Behind Elizabeth Smart’s Kidnapping, Captivity And Rescue

The Night of No Sleep: A Captive's Descent into Trauma

In a chilling tale of abduction, captivity, and rescue, 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart was taken from her bedroom in Salt Lake City, Utah, in June 2002. The only witness to the crime, Smart's younger sister Mary Katherine, described the perpetrator as a man who entered their room at knifepoint and forced Elizabeth out of bed.

As police scoured the nation for clues, they considered suspects within the Smart family, due to the alarming nature of kidnappings. However, an in-depth investigation revealed that a stranger was behind Elizabeth's abduction.

The captor, Brian David Mitchell, claimed he was acting on God's orders and demanded that his captive be his wife. He subjected Elizabeth to unimaginable physical and psychological abuse, forcing her into a marriage that would last for nine months. The young girl was repeatedly raped and held in captivity against her will, with Mitchell and his accomplice Wanda Barzee controlling every aspect of her life.

As the investigation continued, police discovered that Mitchell had a history of violent behavior, including allegations of child abuse. The case took a dramatic turn when Smart's mother Lois inadvertently gave Mitchell her husband's business card, which would later become crucial in identifying him as Elizabeth's captor.

In March 2003, Elizabeth was rescued after being held captive at a camp in San Diego. Mitchell and Barzee were arrested on the spot, but it would take years for them to face justice. In a stunning turn of events, Barzee was deemed competent to stand trial, while Mitchell was later found guilty of kidnapping and sex trafficking.

The case has left Smart with emotional scars that still linger today. Despite her efforts to speak out about her experience, she has faced criticism from some who believe Barzee's release is premature. In a powerful statement, Smart urged authorities to reevaluate the situation, citing concerns about Barzee's mental health and potential threat to public safety.

As the case comes full circle, Elizabeth Smart's story serves as a haunting reminder of the horrors that children can face at the hands of their captors. The Netflix documentary "Kidnapped: Elizabeth Smart" sheds new light on this shocking true story, offering a glimpse into the traumatic events that shaped the life of one young woman and her family forever.

With its harrowing details and courageous storytelling, "Kidnapped: Elizabeth Smart" is a must-watch for anyone who dares to confront the darkest corners of human nature.

I'm still shaking my head about this case 🤯... like what was going through Mitchell's mind? Forcing a kid into marriage and repeatedly raping her... it's just not right. And then Barzee, who was also involved in the abuse... how could they both think they were above the law? I mean, Smart's mom Lois gave Mitchell her husband's business card by accident, can you believe that? It just goes to show that even the most ordinary-seeming people can hide extraordinary evil. The fact that Barzee got released and was deemed competent to stand trial is still super messed up 😩... like what's going on with our justice system? And Smart's still dealing with emotional scars from this experience... it's not something you can just "get over" 🤕...

I'm still trying to figure out how this case went down 🤯. I mean, on one hand, it's sickening that some people think Barzee shouldn't have been released yet... like, what even is her defense? "Oh, I was delusional and thought I had a romantic relationship with Elizabeth"? 😒 It just doesn't add up.

And what really gets me is how Lois Smart basically handed over the key to catching Mitchell by giving him his business card. Like, didn't she realize that was a major red flag? 🤔 This whole thing feels like a huge mistake on multiple levels.

But at the same time... I feel bad for Barzee's family and loved ones. She's been through some serious trauma herself, and it's not fair to judge her based on what Mitchell did (and didn't) do. Maybe she needs more help than we think? 🤷‍♀️

oh my gosh 🤯 this story is literally insane i cant even imagine what elizabeth smart went through being held captive like that for 9 months and then having to relive it all over again in court 💔 her strength is just incredible watching this documentary and seeing how much courage she has is really inspiring me 🙌 its not easy to watch but someone needs to bring attention to these cases and make sure people like elizabeth are protected from people like brian david mitchell and wanda barzee we need more support for victims of trauma and their families too 💖

can you believe how lucky elizabeth smart was to be rescued? i mean 9 months of being held captive and raped by that guy brian david mitchell? and now people are saying barzee's release is premature because she's not fully competent to stand trial?? like what even is that? shouldn't her competence be based on how much trauma she's caused others?! 😩👮‍♀️ this case is so messed up and it's crazy how the system can be so flawed. but at the same time i feel bad for barzee too, she was definitely a pawn in mitchell's twisted game of manipulation. and elizabeth smart's story is just heartbreaking 🤕

I'm telling you, the fact that Wanda Barzee was deemed competent to stand trial but now has her release being questioned is not surprising 🤔. If the system doesn't take into account mental health when it comes to high-profile cases like this, what's next? I mean, we all know Mitchell's history of violent behavior, so isn't that a pretty big red flag already 🔴? And can we please talk about how Elizabeth Smart has been speaking out for years and still faces criticism from people who don't even know the full story 🙄. It's like, come on, folks, let's get some facts straight before we start judging each other.

😱 this case is still giving me the chills thinkin bout elizabeth smart bein held captive 4 9 months thats so messed up 🤯 i feel bad 4 her & her family, especially mary katherine bein the only witness 2 it cannt be easy carryin around that trauma 2 u 4 the rest of ur life 👎 its great that elizabeth spoke out 2 make sure people dont forget what happened to her but its also sad that some ppl think barzecs release is premature 🤷‍♀️ mental health & public safety should be a priority 💔

omg just watched this doc on netflix and i'm still shaking 😱 elizabeth smart's story is literally the most terrifying thing i've ever seen in my life, 14 years old and taken away from her family by some psycho who thinks he's doing god's work 🤯 it's just unbelievable how much trauma she went through, from being forced into a marriage to being raped multiple times... 🙏

and can we talk about the fact that wanda barzee was deemed competent to stand trial but elizabeth smart still has emotional scars? 😔 like, what even is wrong with our justice system? 🤷‍♀️ and i totally get why elizabeth smart wants reevaluation of barzee's case... mental health is so important and we can't just ignore the signs 🌟

anyway, this doc was just so powerful and i feel like it's giving me PTSD 😂 but in a good way? 🤣 i need to talk about this more with my friends ASAP 👫

🤯 this case is still giving me chills i mean 23 years have passed but elizabeth smart's story feels like it happened yesterday it's crazy how one person can inflict so much trauma and abuse on another human being 🤕 and yeah lois smart's mistake with the business card was a game changer for law enforcement but at the same time i feel bad for wanda barzee she was deemed competent to stand trial which is kinda harsh considering all she's been through 💔 what really got me thinking is how elizabeth smart has faced criticism from people who think barzee's release is premature like shouldn't we be focusing on her recovery and rehabilitation instead of worrying about public safety 🤷‍♀️ it's a complex issue but one thing is for sure elizabeth smart's story needs to be told so that others can learn from her experiences and never let anyone make them feel so helpless or alone again 💪

man... this elizabeth smart story is still so messed up 🤯 think about a 14 yr old girl being taken from her bed & held captive for months by some dude she barely knew... it's just heartbreaking 💔 and the fact that he was only caught cuz his business partner's wife gave him her hubby's card lol what a twist! but seriously, the trauma she went thru is just unimaginable 🤯 and i can understand why smart would want barzee to be reevaluated 👮‍♀️ hope she gets the help & support she needs

omg I'm still shook by this case 🤯 like 14 yrs old being held captive & raped is just too much...and on top of that she had to deal with her own family members thinking the perp was one of them 😂🙄 but for real can you even imagine living in fear like that? I mean I've heard of Stockholm syndrome before but this takes it to a whole new level...it's just so messed up 💔

I'm so done with the whole system failing Elizabeth Smart, ya know? I mean, can't we even get it right for one girl who's been through what she went through?! 😡 Like, Barzee got off scot-free after being deemed competent to stand trial... it just don't sit right with me. And what really gets me is that Smart's own family members were actually suspects at first 🤯... like, can you even imagine how that must've felt for her? The investigation was all over the place, and it's no wonder Elizabeth's still dealing with emotional trauma to this day 💔.

And don't even get me started on Mitchell's whole "God's orders" thing 🙄... please. That's just a bunch of manipulation and gaslighting. It's not like he had some grand revelation or anything. He was just a sociopath who preyed on someone's vulnerability, plain and simple.

I'm all for giving people second chances, but when it comes to serial abusers like Mitchell, I think we should be holding them accountable from the jump ⚠️. Elizabeth Smart deserves justice, not some half-hearted attempt at rehabilitation. It's time for us to hold our systems accountable and make sure that something like this never happens again 🤜🤛
