'This is a tough league': Temwa Chawinga on coping without her sibling and starring in NWSL

Kansas City Current's Temwa Chawinga has doubled up as the NWSL's top scorer and MVP for the second year in a row – only two years after Tabitha, her elder sister and mentor, was the Golden Boot winner with Internazionale in Italy's Serie A Femminile. The duo from Malawi is often compared to tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams.

"It's your season," Tabitha told Temwa before she joined the Kansas City Current last year. "Grab everything on the NWSL table. Don't leave anything you are able to get." These words of wisdom from her sister, who had already achieved great success with her football career, have been instrumental in Temwa's rapid rise up the ranks.

Temwa has won numerous awards and accolades throughout her career, including 63 goals for Wuhan Jianghan and The Scorchers, making her the world's leading goalscorer in top-flight football. Her impressive form earned her a two-year contract with the Current, where she continues to terrorize defenses.

Having left a familiar environment in China, Temwa moved to the United States to join the Kansas City Current. She has credited her new teammates for welcoming her with open arms and treating her like they knew her before.

As she prepares to represent Malawi at next year's Women's Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon), Temwa is confident that her team has a lot to offer. "It means a lot to me, to Malawi, that we are now there," she said. The Scorchers will be a force to be reckoned with at Wafcon, thanks in large part to the lethal firepower of Temwa Chawinga.

With two years of experience under her belt and a proven track record of success, Temwa is ready to take on new challenges. She has come a long way from her days playing for Chinese club Jiangsu LFC with little support from her family and sister.

The Current's captain, Lo'eau LaBonta, and other senior players played an important role in Temwa's development, pushing her to be the best player she could be. With their guidance, Temwa has established herself as one of the most feared strikers in women's football.

Omg, I'm loving this Chawinga sisters story 💖! It's not just about them scoring goals tho, its also about how far they've come from where they started. From playing for Chinese club Jiangsu LFC with no support to becoming a top scorer in NWSL and Africa - it's truly inspiring 🙌. And let's be real, who wouldn't want to play under the guidance of Lo'eau LaBonta? She's like the ultimate coach-player duo 👯‍♀️. I'm curious though, what do you guys think is Temwa's secret to success? Is it her natural talent or has she put in the hard work to get there? 🤔

I mean, it's just great to see these sisters killing it on the pitch! Tabitha and Temwa are def total goals ( 10x ) right now 🤩🏆. It's amazing how far they've come from their China days, huh? I'm not surprised they're taking over the NWSL – those skills ain't gonna quit 😂. Kansas City Current is looking like a team to beat for sure! And can we talk about how awesome it is that Temwa has found a new fam in the US 🤗? Those senior players must be super proud of her growth and all the awards she's won (63 goals, though... what?!). Bring on the Wafcon and let these Malawian sisters show the world what they're made of 💪🌟

omg I'm literally so proud of Temwa Chawinga right now 🤩👏! two years in a row NWSL top scorer and MVP?! that's insane!!! 😲 her dedication to improving herself is truly inspiring, especially after coming from such a tough starting point with little support from her family back home. I mean can you even imagine having to deal with all that pressure on your own? 🤯 but she persevered, worked hard, and look at her now! 🙌

and the fact that she has this amazing bond with her sister Tabitha is just so beautiful ❤️ they're literally living proof that family support can take you places. I'm getting chills thinking about it 😊 and I love how Temwa credits her new teammates for welcoming her like one of their own 🤝 it's all about community and uplifting each other, you know?

anyway I just wanted to share my excitement with everyone 🎉 Temwa's achievements are not just a testament to her own hard work but also a reminder that anything is possible if you believe in yourself 💪 bring on the Wafcon! 🏆

OMG, I'm totally loving the vibes around Temwa Chawinga right now 🤩 She's literally killing it on the pitch and I'm not just saying that because she's a goal-scoring machine 😂. Her work ethic is insane and it's clear that her sister Tabitha has been super supportive throughout her career. The way they're often compared to Venus and Serena Williams is so fitting - those two are total trailblazers in their sport! 🌟 And Temwa's growth from playing for Jiangsu LFC with little support to becoming one of the top players in NWSL is just incredible 🤯. I'm rooting for her all the way, especially when she represents Malawi at Wafcon next year 🇲🇼💪

omg i'm so obsessed with temwa chawinga 🤩 she's like a goal-scoring machine! did u know that her sister tabitha was also super good at footy? they're literally like tennis legends venus and serena williams, but with soccer skills 😂 anyway, it sounds like team kansas city current has been really supportive of temwa, which is awesome. i wish i had a team to play for too 🤔 what's the best way to get into professional sports in the us? btw, has anyone tried that new energy drink that's all the rage on tiktok?

🤦‍♀️ I mean, can we talk about how they don't have a 'player of the month' feature? Like, it would be super helpful to see how well each player is doing on a monthly basis. It'd give us fans more insight into who's actually performing and help the team make better decisions during games. And another thing, why do we still have to rely on third-party apps to track stats and awards? The NWSL should really invest in their own platform or app... it's 2025 for crying out loud! 😩

I think its awesome that these two sisters are killing it on the pitch 🤩👯‍♀️! Their hard work and dedication have really paid off, especially with Tabitha passing those wise words to Temwa before she joined the Current 👍. It's inspiring to see them support each other both on and off the field 💕. I'm sure they'll bring that same fire to Wafcon 🏆💪! The Scorchers are definitely going to be a force to be reckoned with 🚀.

Temwa Chawinga is literally killing it out there on the pitch 🤯💥 I mean, 63 goals for Wuhan Jianghan? That's insane! And to think she was just telling her sister Tabitha to "grab everything on the NWSL table" before joining the Current last year. Talk about confidence and ambition 💪🏽💫. Her rise to fame is truly inspiring, especially considering how far she's come from playing in China with little support. And now she's got a proven track record of success in the US, and I love that she's been welcomed with open arms by her new teammates 🤝. Can't wait to see what she does next for both the Current and Malawi at Wafcon! 👏💨

It's amazing to see how far they've come, especially after leaving their family behind for a new adventure. Their dedication is inspiring 💪. I'm rooting for them to crush it at Wafcon next year 🏆!

😂👏 just saw this thread about Temwa Chawinga and I'm like wow what happened here 🤯? The woman is on fire 🔥 and I don't know how anyone can keep up with her scoring skills. 63 goals in top-flight football? that's insane! 🙌 as a casual soccer fan, I've been following Temwa's career for a bit now and I gotta say, she's got some serious game 🎮. But what really gets me is how down-to-earth she seems despite all her success. She's like the ultimate underdog story - from playing with little support to becoming one of the best players in the world 💪. Can't wait to see her kill it at Wafcon next year! 💥

I'm lovin' how these two Malawian sisters are killin' it in the NWSL 🤩🏆! Their fam vibes and supportive squad are giving me major inspiration 💖👫 Temwa's rise to fame is a total Cinderella story - from strugglin' with little support back home to become one of the world's top goalscorers 🌎 Goal!

Temwa Chawinga is on fire 🔥! I mean, 63 goals in top-flight football? That's insane! 🤯 She's like a goal-scoring machine 💪. And it's not just her skills on the field that are impressive, it's how she's overcome obstacles to get where she is today. I feel for her and Tabitha when they were playing with little support from their family back in Malawi. But now, Temwa has found a new family with the Kansas City Current 👫. They've helped her reach new heights, literally 🌆. Can't wait to see what she does next! 🤔

🤩 can't even begin to tell you how hyped I am for Temwa Chawinga! Two years running top scorer and MVP? that's insane! 🚀 she's got talent pouring out of every pore, and it's clear her sister Tabitha has been instrumental in her growth. the way she's taken on a new team and acclimated to the US is just testament to her strength and determination 💪. and let's not forget those words of wisdom from Tabitha - "it's your season" 🕰️... Temwa's definitely making the most of it! 💥

Temwa Chawinga is literally on fire 🔥! Two years in a row being NWSL top scorer and MVP? That's insane! I mean, her sister Tabitha already had an impressive career, but Temwa has taken it to another level 🚀. I love how she credits her new teammates for making her feel welcome in the US, that's so important for any athlete moving to a new country 🤝. And now, with Malawi's Wafcon team looking strong, we can expect big things from Temwa on the African stage 🌳!

THERE'S SO MUCH TO CELEBRATE ABOUT TEMWA CHAWINGA RIGHT NOW!!! 🎉 SHE'S NOT ONLY DOUBLED AS THE NWSL TOP SCORER AND MVP FOR THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW, BUT ALSO SHOWCASED HER TEAMWORK BY CREDITING HER NEW TEAMMATES FOR MAKING HER FEEL WELCOME IN THE USA 🙏. AND IT'S SO COOL TO SEE HOW SHE'S PAID IT FORWARD FROM HER DAYS PLAYING IN CHINA WITH LITTLE SUPPORT FROM HER FAMILY AND SISTER 👪👯. TEMWA'S PROOF THAT WITH HARD WORK, DEDICATION, AND A GREAT TEAM BEHIND YOU, ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!!! 💪

Temwa Chawinga is literally on fire! 🚀 I mean, 63 goals for Wuhan Jianghan and The Scorchers? That's insane! And to do it all twice with the Kansas City Current? She's a role model for young girls back in Malawi. I love that she's being mentored by her sister Tabitha, it's like they're two peas in a pod out there on the field 🤝. And can we talk about how welcoming her teammates have been to her in the States? That's all you need to know about the great people of Kansas City 💖. Now I'm excited for Malawi to take on their opponents at Wafcon - Temwa's got this! ⚽

I'm getting old memories, you know? Reminds me of when Maradona and Messi used to dominate the pitch... I mean, Temwa Chawinga is on fire! 🤩 She's got that same killer instinct like her sister Tabitha back in the day. And can we talk about how fast she's risen up the ranks? It's crazy thinking about when she was playing for those Chinese clubs and now she's a star in the NWSL. I wish I could've seen her play when she was with Jiangsu LFC, but I guess that's just part of growing old... 🙃

🤔 I'm telling you, this is all too good to be true... I mean, two sisters dominating women's football like that? It's almost... scripted 📺. Have you noticed how often they're compared to those tennis legends? It's like someone's trying to recreate a winning formula or something 😏. And what's with the "grab everything on the NWSL table" advice from their sister? Sounds like someone was trying to prepare them for a bigger agenda 🤫... I'm not saying Tabitha and Temwa are in cahoots, but it's definitely suspicious 🔍.
