At Least 25 Killed in Goa Nightclub Fire, Many Trapped Inside
A devastating fire at a popular nightclub in Goa's Arpora district has claimed the lives of at least 25 people, with several tourists among the dead. The tragedy occurred at midnight on Saturday when flames erupted behind the stage during a live music performance, trapping many inside the basement area of the club.
According to officials, upwards of 100 people were present in the venue when the fire broke out. The first floor where many guests were gathered for the live show was engulfed in flames within minutes, and it is believed that most of those who died suffocated while trapped in the basement due to a lack of emergency exits.
"It's a very painful day for all of us in Goa," said Chief Minister Pramod Sawant. "I have ordered an inquiry into this incident, and those found responsible will face the strictest action under the law."
Firefighters worked tirelessly through the night to put out the fire and rescue those trapped. The scene was reduced to a blackened shell by morning, with investigators combing the wreckage for clues.
Most of the dead were the club's workers who had been in the basement at the time of the fire, but officials confirmed that several tourists had also lost their lives. Chief Minister Sawant stated that three to four tourists had died, although the process of identifying the victims was ongoing.
The police report filed after the incident revealed that the venue was operating with proper licenses, but lacked an emergency exit door on both the ground floor and deck floor to facilitate evacuation in case of emergencies.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the fire as "deeply saddening," while a Goa politician called for a fire safety audit of all clubs. The incident has raised concerns about fire safety regulations and poor building practices in India, which have led to frequent fires and tragic losses of life.
