UK rejects visa for girl left destitute in Jamaica by Hurricane Melissa

British Family Struggles to Reunite Due to UK Visa Rejection for Destitute Eight-Year-Old Girl Left Behind by Hurricane.

An eight-year-old girl from Jamaica, Lati-Yana Stephanie Brown, is facing a heartbreaking situation after being barred from joining her parents in the UK. The young girl was left destitute following Hurricane Melissa, which severely damaged her home and rendered her grandmother unable to care for her.

The girl's mother, Kerrian Bigby, who married Jerome Hardy, Lati-Yana's father, in April 2023, applied for a visa that would allow the eight-year-old to join them in the UK. However, despite saving up Β£4,000 for the application fee and stating an urgent situation had become an emergency, the Home Office has rejected the visa.

According to officials at the Home Office, while acknowledging the devastating effects of the hurricane on Lati-Yana and her family, they cited evidence that the grandmother can still provide care as a reason for rejecting the application. The parents have expressed devastation over the decision and plan to appeal against it, however, with an appeals backlog of 106,000 cases, their lawyer warned it could take up to two years before the case is heard.

Lati-Yana's mother described the emotional pain she has experienced since being separated from her daughter as 'incredibly painful' adding that she struggles to sleep at night knowing that her eight-year-old is far away and not receiving the care and support needed.

Her lawyer, Naga Kandiah, also criticized the Home Office for appearing to be taking a stricter view of such cases, stating that they were failing to demonstrate compassion for vulnerable young girls who are being separated from their parents due to circumstances beyond their control.

As an appeal is likely to come forward, Lati-Yana's parents will have to pay several thousand pounds more for the process.

😱 This is just heartbreaking πŸ˜”. I cant belive that the Home Office is taking this long and rejecting the visa in the first place πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ. The fact that they're considering Lati-Yana's grandmother being able to care for her as a reason for rejection is just not right πŸ™…β€β™€οΈ. It's like they're saying that grandma's love and care aren't good enough, just because there are other options available πŸ’”.

I also feel sorry for Kerrian and Jerome, who have been through so much already with Hurricane Melissa πŸŒͺ️. It's just not fair to leave their little girl behind and make her fight for a chance to be reunited with them 🀝. Two years is way too long to wait for an appeal hearing - it's just unacceptable ⏰.

The Home Office needs to step up their game and show some compassion towards these vulnerable families 🀝. They need to recognize that these kids are not just statistics or numbers, but human beings who deserve love, care, and support ❀️.

I'm so down with the idea of letting that 8-yr-old girl join her fam in the UK πŸ€—... I mean, come on, what's the point of having a visa system if it's just gonna leave kids like her out to dry? Β£4k is nothing for a family trying to rebuild their lives after a hurricane! πŸ’Έ

But wait, what if the granny can still take care of her? I guess that's a good thing... unless we're talking about basic human rights and stuff here πŸ€”. It just doesn't seem right that she has to go through this much drama while other countries have more relaxed rules.

Ugh, now I'm thinking maybe the Home Office is doing the right thing after all? No, wait, no they're not... That granny might be able to take care of her, but what if she can't for some reason? Or what if it's just a case of them not wanting to deal with another visa application? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

I don't know, man... this is all so messed up! 😩

Ugh 🀯 this is like, so heartbreaking. I mean, can't they see that this little girl is just a kid who needs her family? Β£4,000 isn't even that much money! πŸ€‘ And what's with the grandma thing? Can't she get some help or something? It's not like it's Lati-Yana's fault that her grandmother can't take care of her. The Home Office should be doing more to help these families, especially when it comes to kids who are going through trauma. I'm literally shaking thinking about this poor little girl πŸ€• two years is just too long to wait for a decision...

omg u guys can u believe this?! 🀯 they're letting a 8 year old girl who has been thru so much go thru hell cuz of paperwork lol what even is the Home office thinking?! πŸ˜‚ i mean i get it, we need to be strict but come on! a hurricane hit her and now she's stuck πŸŒͺ️ meanwhile her mom is up all night worrying about her daughter πŸ€±β€β™€οΈ this is just heartbreaking & i'm literally sending all my vibes to Lati-Yana & her fam πŸ™ they deserve so much better than this 🚫

omg this is so sad πŸ€• the home office is literally breaking tiny humans' hearts like lati-yana doesn't deserve to be rejected just because her grandma can still take care of her? isn't that like leaving a child in school while they have exams lol but seriously it's not fair at all... two years waiting for an appeal is like, forever πŸ•°οΈ can't the home office just show some compassion and let lati-yana be with her parents already?!

πŸ˜”πŸ’” Oh my goodness, this little girl's story is just breaking my heart! πŸ€• I can only imagine how hard it must be for her and her mom to be separated like this. The Home Office should really look into compassionately reevaluating their decision πŸ™πŸ» especially with the grandma being able to care for her, but still not being enough. πŸ’ͺ I hope the parents' appeal gets a speedy hearing so Lati-Yana can be reunited with them ASAP πŸ•°οΈπŸ’•

ugh this is so messed up πŸ€•... like I get it, visa processes and all that, but leaving an 8-year-old girl destitute in Jamaica? that's just heartless... think about her life now - no family, no home, no support system... and the UK government is just sitting on their hands over this one... I mean, Β£4k for the application fee? that's not even a drop in the ocean considering what she's going through πŸ€‘... and now they're gonna make them pay more to appeal? that's just rubbing salt in the wound...

πŸ€• UK visa system is a joke πŸ™„, can't believe they're prioritizing grandma over a 8-yr-old girl who's been through trauma β›ˆοΈ. This is heartbreaking and unacceptable 😒. Need some compassion and common sense in decision-making πŸ’‘

Ugh πŸ˜” this is just heartbreaking... I mean, I get it that the Home Office has a job to do and all, but 8 years old? πŸ€• That poor kid deserves some compassion here! The family's situation is bad enough without having to deal with this bureaucratic mess too. And what really grinds my gears is the appeals backlog - 106k cases? How are they supposed to make decisions on all that? πŸ™„ It's just common sense, right?

Ugh 🀯 this is so not fair! 😭 They left Jamaica and all they can do now is sit back and watch her suffer? πŸ’” It's like, what kinda system is that? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ I mean, I get that there are rules and everything, but come on! A child is crying herself to sleep every night because she's not with her mum. 😭 That's not compassionate, that's cruel ❀️. They need to take a closer look at this case and make an exception. 🀝

πŸ˜•πŸ€― I mean, what's going on with these UK visa rejections? An 8-year-old girl left behind by a hurricane and they're like "nope, grandma can take care of her"? πŸ™„ They should be prioritizing family over paperwork. And now the parents have to appeal and wait another 2 years... πŸ’” it's just so frustrating. I know they saved up Β£4,000 for the application fee, but that shouldn't be enough considering the girl's situation is an emergency. πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ The Home Office should be more understanding, especially when it comes to vulnerable kids like Lati-Yana. They're basically taking away a child's chance at a happy life just because of some red tape. πŸ˜”

awww this little girl is having the worst time πŸ€•πŸ˜ she's already gone through so much with hurricane melissa and now her parents are being super harsh on her... like what even is that? i feel so bad for lati-yana, can't imagine sleeping without her mom πŸ˜” her mom's story is just heartbreaking too... it sounds like the home office should be showing more compassion πŸ€— especially when it comes to a vulnerable child in need of care ❀️

Ugh, this is just heartbreaking πŸ€•. I mean, can't they see that the girl needs her family now? It's not like she was planning on leaving Jamaica or anything. She got caught up in a hurricane and her life was ruined. And now her parents are being treated like they're some kind of lawbreakers because they want to take care of their daughter? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ The Home Office should be showing more compassion, not less. I mean, what's the point of having a visa system if it's just gonna leave families apart and make them suffer even more? πŸ˜”

OMG, thats like so sad πŸ˜”. I cant even imagine bein in her shoes & havin my kid taken away from me cos of a disaster. The Home Office should defo show some compassion & lets hope Lati-Yana gets reunited with her family soon 🀞. Its not fair that they got rejected just because granny is still lookin out for her - every child deserves love n care, regardless of what's happenin in their home life 🌟

omg this is just heartbreaking πŸ€• she's just a kid and her family is literally living in poverty after that hurricane and now they're being rejected from moving to the uk because her grandma can still care for her? like what's the point of even having a visa system if it's not gonna help people in desperate situations?! 😑 their lawyer is right, the home office needs to show some compassion here 🀝 it's not just about the money or paperwork, it's about the emotional toll this is taking on lati-yana and her family... two years of waiting for an appeal? that's just too long πŸ’”

This story is just a microcosm of how broken our system can be... I mean, who gets left behind after a hurricane? 🀯 Eight-year-old kids are already vulnerable enough, and then they get stuck in this limbo because of some bureaucracy 🚫. The Home Office's response just feels so soulless - "Oh, grandma can still care for her, no need to worry about the kid". 😒 Where's the compassion? Where's the empathy?

And now these parents have to spend more money on an appeal that might take two years... two whole years! That's like losing a chunk of your life while you're trying to get back to your daughter. πŸ•°οΈ It's just not right, and it makes me wonder what other people are going through in this system.

We need to question our priorities as a society - do we really value the lives of these vulnerable kids less than the lives of adults? πŸ’” We need to be more understanding, more compassionate... we can't just leave them behind πŸŒͺ️.

Umm... I mean, I think it's super sad that this girl is going through all this πŸ€• but at the same time, like, I don't know if the Home Office is being too harsh? πŸ€” I guess they gotta follow rules and all that, but come on, Β£4k for an application fee is a lot of money... maybe the family could've gotten some help from other organizations or something? πŸ’Έ And what's up with this "granny can still care" thing? Like, is that even true? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ My grandma might be old and stuff, but I'm not exactly an expert on childcare... πŸ˜‚

OMG u cannt bliev this 🀯! I mean, its like so sad 4 that lil girl Lati-Yana she was just 8 yrs old n her life got wrecked by a hurricane n now shes stuck in Jamaica w/o her parents 😭 her mom Kerrian is literally dyin 2 b w/out her daughter & cannt sleep at nite cuz shes thinkin bout her πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ n I feel 4 her so much!

Anuvver ting its like so frustrating wen u see cases like dis & ppl r sayin that the Home Office is just bein too harsh πŸ™„ I mean, who decides 2 reject a visa 4 a child whos parents cant take care of 'em? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ n it just highlights how broken our immigration system is πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ we shd b doin more 2 help families like Lati-Yana's πŸ‘
