Houston Police Department Catches Thief After Unmarked Vehicle Stolen from Detective in Downtown Area
A brazen theft occurred Tuesday evening when an unhoused man jumped into a detective's unmarked vehicle while she was working on an extra job in Downtown Houston, leaving the law enforcement officer with no way to respond. The suspect made off with the vehicle, which was discovered later near the Eastex Freeway at East Mt. Houston.
Fortunately, authorities were able to track down the suspect without incident, thanks to a swift traffic stop. The man surrendered peacefully and will now face charges for either theft or unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
The detective's presence, including her service weapon, may have deterred other would-be thieves in the future. Thankfully, there was no damage reported after the vehicle was reclaimed.

... like what if you get lost in a crowd and can't find your way back? I had this happen once and it was super stressful, had to wait for a friend to figure out where we were. Anyway, cool that the police caught the thief without any issues, but it makes me wonder how common is it for people to steal unmarked vehicles? Shouldn't they know better? 
I mean, who steals a cop's car like it's no big deal? what's next, stealing the whole department's equipment and just walking away like they're on a reality TV show? anyway, glad it all worked out without anyone getting hurt... I guess that's one way to get a story for "most brazen theft ever" 
this is crazy! i mean, someone just walks into a detective's car and takes it? what's next?! 
anyway, glad the thief didn't do anything too crazy and the detective was able to get her car back safely. but seriously, how does that even happen?

. This whole thing sounds like a scary situation for that detective who got taken advantage of while she was working hard on the streets. I mean, can you imagine being in her shoes and having your ride stolen right from under you?

The fact that the detective was working on her own job and didn't even have any backup makes me really grateful that she's safe. And let's be real, having her service weapon with her might've actually scared the guy off before things got out of hand.
and then the fact that the thief was able to get away with it for like hours before being caught is just wild 
. but at least the detective came out okay and no one got hurt, right? 
. and I hope the police are able to get him in front of a judge soon, we can't have people just roaming around with stolen vehicles
