Valentine’s Day movies to fall in love with - Detroit Metro Times

Valentine's Day is just around the corner, and you know what that means - a night in with your significant other or a romantic evening out. But why settle for an ordinary Valentine's Day when you can indulge in some of the most swoon-worthy movies ever made? From period dramas to indie flicks, these films are sure to sweep you off your feet.

First up is "Phantom Thread," a 1950s-set romance about finding the perfect match. It's a sweeping tale of love and desire that will leave you breathless. Next, we have "Casablanca," a classic that needs no introduction. Who can forget Rick Blaine's iconic line, "Here's looking at you, kid"? It's a movie that will make you laugh, cry, and swoon.

For something a bit more offbeat, try "Portrait of a Lady on Fire." This beautifully acted period piece is both achingly romantic and gloriously queer. It's a must-see for anyone who loves a good love story.

If you're in the mood for something a bit more melancholic, "In The Mood For Love" is a Wong Kar-wai masterpiece that will break your heart into big, sensual pieces. And if you're feeling adventurous, try "Only Lovers Left Alive," a vampire romance starring Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton.

But what about when the love doesn't work out? "Her" is a poignant exploration of what happens when we realize our partner has evolved beyond us. It's a hopeful and profoundly romantic film that will leave you feeling both sad and uplifted.

Of course, no Valentine's Day would be complete without a little bit of whimsy. That's where "The Princess Bride" comes in - a classic fairy tale with a swashbuckling adventure story at its core. And for the more modern rom-com fans out there, try "Love & Basketball" or "Say Anything."

But what about the movies that didn't make the cut? Well, don't worry, we've got you covered. From the critically-acclaimed "Moonlight" to the sweeping epic "Moulin Rouge!", there's something on this list for everyone.

So go ahead and indulge in some of these swoon-worthy films this Valentine's Day. Your partner (or your solo self) will thank you.

I'm so sure I don't think that most of these movies are really suitable for a night in, but at the same time, I kinda wanna watch all of them with my partner and just relax... 🤷‍♀️ It's like, what if we do end up having an amazing night together and forget about our worries? And then again, some of these movies might just make me feel too sad or nostalgic... 🎥 I guess it depends on how I'm feeling that day. But seriously, can you even choose just one movie to watch when you've got a whole list like this?! 😂

Umm, I think "The Princess Bride" is way overrated 🤣. It's like the ultimate cheesy rom-com. Who still watches that on V-Day? Give me something with some real depth, like "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" instead 😂. And what about all these classic movies? Like, who gets to watch Casablanca without being forced to be a history buff first 🤦‍♂️? I mean, can't we just have a list for rom-coms only? 🎥💔

🎬 u guys gotta watch "Phantom Thread" if ur single 2day lol. it's like, a super romantic & dreamy movie, but also kinda messed up 🤕 in the best way possible. and if u r lookin 4 somethin more quirky, "Portrait of a Lady on Fire" is lit 💁‍♀️🔥. but honestly, whatevs movies u choose, jus make it a cozy nite in with ur bae or uself, 'kay? 🍿💕

omg u gotta watch "portrait of a lady on fire" it's like, soooo beautiful!!! 🎬🔥 i mean, the way they portray love and desire is just, wow... 🤯 and it's not even traditional romance, it's all queer and stuff. i loved how the film was shot, it's like a dream or something. and tilda swinton is just perfection 💁‍♀️ anyway, if u haven't seen it yet, def add it to ur valentines day watchlist 📚👍

so it's that time of the year again... valentine's day 💌💘. i'm a bit meh about all the sappy rom-coms, but there are some actual great movies out there. "phantom thread" is a highlight for me - the costumes, the score, the way paul thomas anderson gets into the head of his characters... it's just masterclass filmmaking. and "portrait of a lady on fire" is another fave of mine - the cinematography is stunning and the love story is so beautifully handled. on the other hand, i'm not a fan of "love & basketball"... it feels like a highlight reel of the protagonist's skills rather than an actual romance 🏀💔. anyway, if you're looking for some new movies to watch with your partner (or not 😉), i'd def check out these recommendations.

🎥💘 oh yeah, valentine's day is like, the perfect excuse to watch all these romantic movies that make u feel all the feels 😂👀 and i totally agree with this list, some of the most swoon-worthy ones r def "phantom thread" and "portrait of a lady on fire", tho 🤩

OMG, I'm soooo down for a movie marathon with my partner 😍🍿! "Phantom Thread" is def one of my faves - the costumes, the sets, the chemistry between Daniel Day-Lewis and Vicky Krieps... it's all just perfection 🤩. And don't even get me started on "Portrait of a Lady on Fire"... I mean, have you seen Marina de Van's direction? 💁‍♀️ She's a total genius! I'm also loving the vibes from "Love & Basketball" - that scene where Sanaa Lathan and Omar Epps share their first kiss is still giving me major feels ❤️.

I'm so down for a romantic movie marathon on V-Day 🎬💕. But can we also talk about the importance of having some chill time with our significant others? Like, let's be real, sometimes it's not about the grand gestures or the most expensive dinner dates, but just about being present and enjoying each other's company 😌. I mean, have you seen "Amélie"? It's all about finding joy in the little things and appreciating the beauty of everyday moments 💫. Anyways, if you're feeling up for some serious romance, these movies are def worth checking out! 👍

omg i am so down for a movie marathon on vday!!! 😍🍿 i've seen most of these and i gotta say "portrait of a lady on fire" gave me all the feels 🤩 and "in the mood for love" is like my ultimate bittersweet fave 💔 but seriously, who doesn't love a good rom-com or indie flick? 🎥 let's get this vday movie party started! 💃🕺

🎥💘 so they're releasing a whole list of rom-coms just for Valentine's Day? Like, can't we just watch them all year round already? 🙄 and "Phantom Thread" is like the ultimate love story... or just a super intense relationship drama that makes you want to take a shower. 🚿

omg i just watched phantom thread with my bf and it was SO intense we were both literally shaking by the end lol i love how the movie explores the complexities of a relationship, like when you're still in that all-consuming phase but also kinda aware that it's not gonna last forever anyway, am i right?

i love how these movies showcase different sides of love - from classic romance to queer storytelling, melancholy heartbreak, and whimsical fairy tales 🌹💕 what i think is so interesting is how these films can evoke different emotions and reactions in us. like, "moonlight" is such a powerful exploration of identity and community, but it's not necessarily the typical romantic comedy we expect on valentine's day 🤔 maybe that's why i'm drawn to independent films like "portrait of a lady on fire" - they challenge our expectations and make me think about love in new ways 💭

OMG, I'm so down for a movie night with my bf on V-Day! 🍿💕 We're total rom-com fans, so "Love & Basketball" and "Say Anything" are def on our list 🤩. But I also need to check out that new vampire romance flick "Only Lovers Left Alive"... Tom Hiddleston is my fave! 😍 Can someone else tell me what's the deal with this film? Is it like a normal rom-com or more of an indie thing? 🤔

omg i'm so down for a movie night with my bf! but can we pls talk about how many fonts are used here 🤦‍♀️ i counted at least 5 different ones, and it's giving me layout whiplash 😂 anyway back to the movies... i think "Phantom Thread" is such an underrated film, and that ending tho 💔 what about "The Love Witch"? 🕷️ that one would've totally made the cut if it was included in this list 🤔

I'm really down for a movie marathon this V-Day 🍿💕 I've seen "Phantom Thread" already, but watching it again with someone special sounds like a great idea 😊 As for the ones that didn't make the cut, have you guys seen "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"? That's another beautifully emotional film about love and loss... it's definitely worth a watch 💔
