Van driver in Borough Park kills 84-year-old pedestrian, injures another, police say

A Brooklyn man, identified as Jose Ramirez, 38, was arrested and charged with driving without a license after allegedly striking an 84-year-old pedestrian, Noach Klein, who was killed in the incident. According to police, Ramirez was behind the wheel of a 2018 Ford Transit van on Wednesday evening when he collided with Klein and a 54-year-old man crossing 18th Avenue near 49th Street in Borough Park.

The victims were not in the crosswalk at the time of the collision but had the red light, which they had in their favor. Police stated that Ramirez's vehicle did not have the proper registration or insurance to operate in New York state.

Ramirez stayed on the scene and was charged hours later with unlicensed aggravated operating of a vehicle. The van's driver lives in Midwood, according to police. The NYPD's collision investigation squad is still looking into the incident.

Noach Klein lived in South Williamsburg but had recently owned a silver shop near the intersection where he was struck. According to reports from local news outlets, Klein's family was preparing for his funeral after speaking with a reporter who called them on Thursday. However, they were unable to be reached due to their emotional state at that time.

The NYPD reported that there have been at least 164 pedestrian collisions in the 66th Precinct so far this year. This is slightly lower than the same period last year, which saw 179 pedestrians involved in crashes. However, pedestrian deaths within the precinct have increased slightly, with Klein's death marking the fourth of the year.

The incident serves as a reminder of ongoing concerns regarding pedestrian safety in Brooklyn neighborhoods such as Borough Park and Midwood.

omg, can u believe this guy's got more tickets than a speeding ticket from his grandma πŸš¨πŸ˜‚! like, Jose Ramirez was driving without a license and still managed to hit someone... i mean, that's what happens when you're not paying your fines on time, right? πŸ˜‚ the fact that he stayed on the scene is even crazier, like, if u got caught, why do it all at once? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ anywayz, pedestrian safety in Brooklyn neighborhoods is def a concern, and we need to keep making sure our roads are safe for everyone... noach klein's memory will live on πŸ’”πŸš—

😱 oh man this is so sickening!! like 84 years old and he's still walking around and some dude like Jose Ramirez comes along and kills him... what's wrong with people?! 🀯 the fact that the guy didn't even have a license or insurance and was driving recklessly just shows how irresponsible some drivers are. and the worst part is that it happened in front of all these people and they're just standing there watching... 🚨 what's the point of having red lights if nobody's gonna stop when they see someone crossing the street?!?! 🚫 this is getting outta hand, we need to do something about pedestrian safety before more innocent lives get lost.

OMG I cant believe whats happenin to people in NYC 🀯! Like, you think u can just get behind the wheel without no license or insurance? That's so reckless! πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ What kinda person do that? Poor Noach Klein he was just a guy tryna make it home and now hes gone πŸ’”.

I dont know what the solution is but somethin gotta change. We need more awareness about pedestrian safety, like putting up more signs or having more cameras around. I mean, whats with all these collisions in 66th precinct already? Its like theres a pattern here πŸ“ˆ. Can we get a better system in place to prevent this from happenin again?

The fact that the driver stayed on the scene is just low-key disturbing 😷. Like, what if he was tryna cover his tracks or somethin? The NYPD needs to do more to hold people accountable for these kinds of incidents πŸš”. Anyways, RIP Noach Klein 🌹

😱 OMG u can believe this! so like Jose Ramirez just gets behind the wheel of his van without a license lol what is he even thinkin?! πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ 84-year-old Noach Klein dies cuz of him and now his family has to deal with all that grief πŸ’”. I know accidents happen but come on man! it's not like Ramirez was in a rush or nothin'. and can we talk about pedestrian safety for sec? NYC needs more cameras & stuff πŸ“ΈπŸš¨. 164 pedestrian collisions so far this year is crazy 😲.

man...this is just heartbreaking πŸ€• another poor soul lost to some careless driver...i feel bad for Noach's family, they're still trying to process this loss...and to think he was just walking with a friend or something, enjoying the evening stroll...but you know how it goes sometimes...someone just isn't paying attention on the road. and yeah, this is like, super avoidable if people just follow the rules πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ no license, no registration, no insurance...it's just common sense stuff that people seem to forget these days. anyway, my thoughts are with Noach's family and loved ones πŸ’”

πŸš—πŸ˜± that's so sad what happened to Noach Klein πŸ€• 84 y/o is not old, he was still walking around with his own shop πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈπŸ’Ό family must be devastated πŸ’”πŸ‘Š police gotta do more to enforce traffic rules πŸ“πŸš« and make sure these vans are registered & insured πŸš—πŸ’° pedestrians got the right of way too πŸš«πŸ‘£ at least 164 collisions this year? that's crazy many πŸ‘₯πŸ’₯ more needs to be done for pedestrian safety in Brooklyn πŸ’‘πŸŒ†

I JUST CAN'T BELIEVE THIS IS HAPPENING ON OUR STREETS!!! 😱 A 38-YEAR-OLD MAN STRIKES AN 84-YEAR-OLD PEDESTRIAN AND KILLS HIM AND WE'RE TALKING ABOUT HOW MANY PEDESTRIAN COLLISIONS ARE HAPPIENING ALREADY THIS YEAR?!?! 164?!?! IT'S JUST NOT RIGHT!!! πŸ’” AND TO THINK THE GUY WHO DROVE THAT VAN WAS EVEN WITHOUT REGISTRATION AND INSURANCE... 🚫 IT JUST GOES TO SHOW WE NEED TO BE MORE VIGILANT OUT HERE, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO PEDESTRIAN SAFETY! πŸ‘

Man, this is just so sad πŸ€•... You'd think you're on your own when you're driving, but nope, not always. I mean, Ramirez's van was all messed up with registration and insurance, it's like he didn't care about anyone else on the road. And for what? He gets a slap on the wrist? It feels like he should've gotten more time behind bars... Noach Klein was just trying to get somewhere, minding his own biz, and this happens. It's a big deal for his family too, they're still grieving and all that. 🀝 The stats are pretty eye-opening though - 164 pedestrian collisions in one precinct already? That's not cool at all... maybe we need to rethink our whole approach to driving safety?
