Greenland Unshakable: Labor Union Chief Slams Trump's Annexation Threats
In a strongly-worded rebuke, Jess Berthelsen, chair of SIK, Greenland's largest labor union, has rejected Donald Trump's claims that the Arctic territory poses a national security threat to the US. The Trump administration's renewed threats to seize Greenland have been met with fierce resistance from the Greenlandic people and their government.
Berthelsen emphasized that his country is not for sale and will not be annexed by any foreign power, including the US. "We are not for sale and we will not be annexed," he declared. The union represents thousands of workers across various sectors, including government employees, electricians, mechanics, and fishermen.
Berthelsen disputed Trump's claim that Greenland's waters are infested with Russian and Chinese ships, saying that his organization cannot see or recognize this alleged presence. "It's hard to recognize the demands Trump is setting," he said. "His claims about our waters being full of Russian and Chinese ships, we cannot see that at all."
The Danish navy and big trawlers in Greenland waters have not reported any unusual activity, according to Berthelsen. He questioned why Trump would make such a claim if there was no truth to it.
European leaders, including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, have rallied behind Denmark and Greenland, saying that the territory's future is for Denmark and Greenland alone to decide.
The US corporations can already apply to do business in Greenland, Berthelsen said, highlighting the fact that cooperation between Greenland and the US is undermined by constant threats to the country's autonomy. "It's not very comfortable to receive threats from a lifelong friend, a lifelong ally," he added.
