Mamdani’s vow to keep NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch in her post as mayor could be a key factor in uniting his campaign with those of Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa. However, the decision may not sit well with all Democrats.
Tisch, 44, is an outsider among city officials but has earned a reputation for competence and integrity after taking over the NYPD in November 2024. Her efforts to address misconduct have been praised by both Mamdani and Cuomo, who also pledged to keep her as commissioner if elected.
Since becoming commissioner, Tisch has made significant strides in reducing crime rates nationwide. However, she still faces criticism from progressive voters who feel that she is not doing enough to tackle more severe crimes such as felony assaults, rapes, and domestic violence.
Tisch's approach to policing low-level crimes has also been a contentious issue. Some praise her efforts to crack down on quality of life issues such as aggressive panhandling, while others are concerned about the impact on vulnerable communities.
Advocates for police accountability have expressed skepticism over Tisch's decisions, including her decision to overrule a department judge and clear an officer who shot unarmed Allan Feliz during a traffic stop in 2019. They argue that this lack of accountability undermines public trust in law enforcement.
Tisch's tenure has seen several high-profile crimes make headlines, including the assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson and a shootout at a hookah lounge in Crown Heights. Her approach to these cases has been credited by some as effective management, allowing investigators to solve complex cases without interference from the commissioner.
The question remains whether Tisch's efforts will continue under Mamdani or Cuomo if they win the mayoral election. Some have expressed concerns that her policies and decisions may not align with their own views on policing and accountability.

think its kinda weird mamdani wants to keep tisch as commissioner, considering all the pushback hes already gotten from progressive voters

Her crime rate reduction stats are impressive - a 15% decrease in overall crime since taking over as commissioner is huge!

Those numbers though - her approval ratings are at an all-time high for a NYC official. Not sure if Mamdani's plan to keep Tisch as commissioner will sit well with all Dem voters tho...

. ! It's wild to think about how much of an impact one person can make in law enforcement, especially when it comes to tackling serious crimes like felony assaults. Tisch's approach is super polarizing - some love her for being a total boss, while others feel she's not doing enough to address the root issues

It'll be interesting to see if Mamdani and Cuomo's stances on Tisch are actually aligned with what their base wants to hear

That's just crazy talk! And what about those assaults and domestic violence cases? Don't get me wrong, I want to see crime rates go down too, but we gotta make sure we're not sweeping problems under the rug.

And how do ppl expect her to balance being "competent" with the demands of addressing the more heavy stuff? It feels like she's caught in this catch-22 where if she prioritizes one thing, ppl will say she's not doing enough for another...

I don't know why everyone's making such a big deal about keeping Jessica Tisch in her job... She seems to be doing alright, imo

Like that thing with Allan Feliz, where the cop shot him without cause? That was a major red flag for me. And then there's the whole issue of quality of life policing vs accountability... it feels like Tisch is trying to walk a fine line between keeping the peace and actually holding people in power accountable. I don't know, maybe she'll surprise us all?

But at the same time, I do think Tisch has done some great work as commissioner – she's really brought a sense of competence and integrity back to the NYPD. The thing is, it's not just about her being in charge; it's about the kind of policing we want to have in this city. Do we want to focus on the low-level stuff that keeps our streets safe, or do we want to tackle the tougher issues?

I've been following her work as NYPD commissioner and I'm seriously impressed by the progress she's made in reducing crime rates. Of course, there are still some issues to address, but I think she's on the right track. Mamdani's decision to keep her as mayor could be a real win for his campaign if it brings together more voters. And let's be real, Cuomo and Sliwa are all about keeping her as commissioner too!
