Whistleblower accuses Foreign Office of 'censoring' warning of Sudan genocide

A former Foreign Office official has claimed that the UK's failure to recognize ongoing atrocities in Sudan has fostered impunity and contributed directly to further genocidal campaigns. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that evidence suggested genocide was likely to unfold again in Darfur.

The official also alleged that the UK had failed to properly assess and acknowledge atrocity risks in Sudan, and that this failure had contributed to a lack of urgency in responding to the crisis.

In January, the US formally declared that genocide had been committed in Sudan by members of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), but the UK has not followed suit. The UK has said that the determination of genocide was an issue for competent courts to decide, but it would act to prevent atrocities.

However, a foreign policy expert on mass violence told MPs that she believed even when warnings were being raised, the FCDO did not have a system by which those warnings could be easily, rapidly and urgently raised to the ministerial office.

The UAE has repeatedly denied providing arms to the RSF. At the same time, evidence was emerging of Emirati involvement in the conflict.

The UK has supported the work of the UN Fact-Finding Mission and the international criminal court and is funding a project to document and verify attacks on civilians.

A Sudanese government official said that the discovery of mass graves containing the bodies of up to 700 people, including women and children, had been confirmed through forensic analysis and DNA testing.

OMG u guys the situation in Sudan is getting super dire πŸ€• Sudan has basically gone off the radar for so long & it's crazy that ppl like this former FO official are speaking out about the atrocities going on there. Like, what's up with the UK not recognizing genocide? It's all about politics, I guess. πŸ’” The fact that they're trying to act all noble about preventing atrocities but aren't willing to acknowledge the elephant in the room is really frustrating. πŸ™„ And those mass graves... 700 people missing... it's just heartbreaking 😭 We need more awareness & action ASAP! πŸ’₯

🀬 I'm so sick of governments playing it safe when it comes to human rights crises! The UK's inaction on Sudan is a total shame, especially with all the evidence pointing to genocide. It's like they're just waiting for someone else to step up and take responsibility. I mean, what's the point of having a 'system' if no one's gonna use it?! 😑 We need to be holding our governments accountable for their actions (or lack thereof). The fact that the UAE is denying any involvement in the conflict but there's proof is just ridiculous. It's time for some real action, not just PR spin! πŸ’ͺ

I'm really worried about what's going down in Sudan πŸ€•... I mean, it's like the UK is just sitting on its hands, waiting for things to get super out of control before they even acknowledge the problem. It's not like they're not aware of all the evidence, they are! But somehow, it never seems to be enough for them to take action. And now there are allegations that UAE is involved too 🀝... it's like a ticking time bomb over there. We need more than just lip service from our leaders, we need real change 🌎

I'm thinking about this whole thing and I just feel like we need to be more careful with our responses... πŸ€” The UK's stance on Sudan is definitely confusing. On one hand, they're saying they won't recognize genocide, but at the same time, they're supporting some of the efforts to document and verify atrocities. It feels like a bit of an odd dance, you know? And what really worries me is that this could lead to more harm for innocent people in Sudan... πŸ’”

πŸ€” I'm really worried about this situation in Sudan. It's like, how can we turn a blind eye to what's happening there? We're talking genocide and atrocities on a massive scale, but the UK just isn't doing enough. I mean, they've got to acknowledge it as genocide, for crying out loud! πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ It's not like it's going to magically solve anything, but at least we can say we're facing it head-on.

And what really gets me is that this foreign policy expert said there's no system in place for quickly warning the government about these atrocities. That's just ridiculous. Can't they see how important it is to act fast when these things are happening? πŸ™„ It's like they're waiting for someone else to make a move, but we can't just sit back and do nothing.

I know the UAE is denying any involvement with the RSF, but come on, let's not be naive. We need to get to the bottom of this. The UK's got some serious explaining to do here πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

omg its crazy what the uk is doing here theyre just enabling saudis and russians to mess with sudan meanwhile the americans are all like "hey weve got this" lol its not that hard to call out genocide u shouldve done it months ago

This news is really bothering me 😞. I mean, think about it, the UK's inaction on recognizing genocide in Sudan could be contributing to more violence and suffering. It's like, we're all so caught up in our own bubbles that we forget how connected the world really is 🌎. The lack of urgency from our government is just devastating πŸ’”. And what's even more disturbing is the UAE's involvement in the conflict - it feels like they're getting away with some serious human rights abuses 🚫. We need to do better, folks! Let's hold our leaders accountable for their actions and support those who are fighting for peace and justice ✊️.

omg can't believe the UK is still playing dumb about what's going on in Sudan 🀯 the fact that they're not recognizing genocide is like, super suspicious to me... all this evidence of atrocities and mass graves but no acknowledgement? it's not like they can just ignore it and hope it goes away πŸ’” i mean, even if they say they'll act to prevent atrocities, how can we trust them when they're not even willing to call out the genocide for what it is? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

I'm really worried about what's happening in Sudan πŸ€•. I mean, it's like we're stuck in a nightmare and can't wake up πŸŒƒ. If the UK isn't recognizing these atrocities, how are they supposed to stop them? It's not like they're just going to sit back and do nothing, but at the same time, they need to be doing more, you know? Like, if the US has already declared genocide, why can't we? πŸ€” And what about all the evidence pointing to UAE involvement? That's some serious red flag waving πŸ”΄. But still, I'm trying not to give up hope 🌈. The fact that they're supporting the UN Fact-Finding Mission and funding a project to document attacks on civilians is like, a small step in the right direction βš–οΈ. And those mass graves... ugh, it's just heartbreaking πŸ’”. We need to do better, but we can't give up 🀞.

I'm so down with recognizing those atrocities in Sudan ASAP 🀯... I mean, who wants to wait for a court to decide if it's genocide? πŸ™„... But at the same time, we can't just rush into things without being sure, right? πŸ’‘... The US is all "we've got this" but what about the UK? Should they be more proactive? πŸ€”... I mean, if a foreign policy expert says it's not like they have a system in place for urgent warnings to reach ministers... 🚨... that's gotta change. But on the other hand, can we trust all these claims of Emirati involvement and UAE denying any wrongdoing? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ... And what about the UN fact-finding mission and the international court? Are they doing enough? πŸ’―... I don't know what to think anymore πŸ˜’...

can't believe what's going on in sudan it feels like we're sleepwalking into another genocidal situation and its heartbreaking think about all those innocent lives lost already πŸ€• the fact that the uk isn't recognizing the atrocities for what they are is really worrying what's taking so long for them to make a move? πŸ™„

omg i just found out my aunt's cousin's friend was part of a human rights group in Khartoum during the Darfur crisis and she said it was SO scary and they barely escaped with their lives... like what even is happening in Sudan?? πŸ€―πŸ’” i feel like the UK is being super passive about this whole situation, i mean, why didn't they recognize genocide earlier?! we need to do more than just fund some projects and send aid packages, we need real action πŸ’ͺπŸ½οΈβ€β™€οΈπŸŒŽ

πŸ€” this is super concerning the fact that the UK isn't taking a stronger stance on recognizing genocide in Sudan is really worrying. I mean, we're talking about thousands of people potentially dying because our government isn't willing to use the term "genocide". It's like they're trying to downplay it or something? πŸ™„ and what's with the lack of urgency? Like, we know there's a crisis going on but we're not doing enough to stop it. The fact that the US is taking action while the UK isn't is just highlighting our own ineptitude when it comes to dealing with atrocities abroad. We need to do better than just saying "we'll act to prevent atrocities" without actually following through. πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ

πŸ€” The UK's slow response to the atrocities in Sudan is a clear example of how politics can lead to human lives being lost 🌎. It's like they're prioritizing diplomacy over doing what's right πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. If the US can take action on genocide, why can't we? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ I think it's time for us to re-evaluate our foreign policy and not just talk about preventing atrocities, but actually take concrete steps to stop them πŸ’ͺ. The fact that our experts can't raise warnings quickly enough is a clear sign of inefficiency πŸ•°οΈ. We need to fix our system before more lives are lost πŸ’”. And what's with the UAE's involvement? 🀐 Can we trust their denials? It's like they're playing both sides, which is just not on πŸ˜’.
