With flurries in the forecast, how common is snow in the Philly area in December?

Flurries in Philly Area: A Rare December Delight

As the region prepares for a potential nor'easter, forecasters are predicting flakes will fall in parts of Bucks, Chester, and Montgomery counties. While it's early to expect snow in December, the National Weather Service is calling for up to an inch of snow and sleet between 4 a.m. and 10 a.m. Tuesday.

However, when comparing this winter month to others, it's worth noting that snowfall averages only 3.8 inches in December, significantly less than January (7.2 inches) and February (8.5 inches). In recent years, December has seen fewer flakes, with only 0.3 inches recorded in 2024. Even since 2010, when the region experienced a notable snowfall of 12.7 inches, it's been over two decades since a foot or more of snow fell in December.

While current winter predictions are leaning towards drier conditions, some periods are expected to be particularly cold. However, these prospects offer a glimmer of hope for a white Christmas, last seen in 2002. The Old Farmer's Almanac also forecasts a milder and drier season for the Atlantic Corridor, with below-average snowfall and precipitation.

For residents waiting for a taste of winter, this nor'easter may be an opportunity to experience flakes before the season truly takes hold.

I'm loving this December surprise in Philly 🌨️! I mean, 3.8 inches is low compared to Jan and Feb, so it's a nice break from the usual dryness. And who knows, maybe we'll even get some flurries before Christmas? The Old Farmer's Almanac forecast sounds promising too... below-average snowfall would be awesome 🙌. It's always exciting when winter surprises us like this. Just hope the nor'easter brings some decent snowflakes instead of just sleet 😬.

I don't think it's a big deal that Philly is getting some flurries in December... I mean, it's basically the norm now anyway. Last year was super cold and there were like 6 inches of snow in January, so this little event isn't exactly unprecedented. The fact that we're only expecting up to an inch of snow is actually pretty reasonable, considering December averages only 3.8 inches anyway 🤷‍♀️

OMG, I'm beyond excited about this potential nor'easter 🌨️! As someone who's had a pretty meh December so far, it'd be amazing to see some actual snow ❄️! I know it's early to expect anything, but 1 inch of snow and sleet is still better than nothing 😊. And let's be real, if we do end up with some decent snowfall, it could totally make our Christmas 🎅 more magical. Fingers crossed for a white Christmas! ✨

It's like, December is literally the most underwhelming month in terms of weather, you know? I mean, we're still talking about flurries here! 1 inch of snow and sleet? That's not exactly what I'd call a winter wonderland, but I guess it's better than nothing. And let's be real, if this is the only chance we get to see some actual snow this year, then yeah, count me in for the nor'easter. It's been ages since we've seen anything remotely close to that, so even if it's just a minor winter fling, I'm here for it 💨. And honestly, who needs a white Christmas when you can get a brief winter surprise? Bring on the flakes! 🌨️

🌨️ u know what's wild about this whole thing? its like how we're all waiting for that one winter wonderland moment, but sometimes life just gives us little tiny glimpses of it instead 🌫️ like a single snowflake falling from the sky, or in this case, even an inch of snow! but here's the thing, sometimes those small moments are enough to remind us that beauty can be found in impermanence ⏰. it's not always about having a whole lot, its about appreciating what you do have and finding joy in the fleeting stuff 🎄
