Worries about immigration are 'manufactured panic' says charity as poll shows issue not a local concern – UK politics live

Keir Starmer has written a letter to Rachel Reeves expressing disappointment that she did not inform him about the mistake of not having the required licence for her family home. However, he accepted her explanation and stated that it would have been better if they had conducted a full trawl through all email correspondence with the estate agency before writing to him.

Reeves' husband was informed by the letting agency that a licence was needed, but he did not recall this exchange. The Chancellor of the Exchequer is responsible for maintaining the peerage roll and will receive a warrant from the King to strike the Duke of York from the roll.

Andrew's name no longer appears on the official roll of the peerage, marking a key step in formally removing his titles. Politicians such as Lisa Nandy, Chris Bryant, Kemi Badenoch, and Ed Davey have expressed their support for the king's decision to strip Andrew of his titles and residence at the Royal Lodge.

The Commons is not sitting today, but there are other politics around, including a debate in the Lords about Ukraine. The Rachel Reeves rental licence story is winding up, and individual Guardian journalists can be contacted on social media or through the Bluesky account @AndrewSparrow.

Ugh I'm literally so done with these politicians and their drama 🤯👑 Can't they just have one normal conversation without someone else being all like "oh wait you didn't do this right"?! Like I get it Keir's the leader of the opposition but can't he just keep his cool for once? And Rachel Reeves is just a mum trying to navigate her life and suddenly she's in the middle of this huge scandal over a bloody rental licence 🤦‍♀️ I mean I'm all for accountability and transparency but come on folks can we not take ourselves too seriously sometimes?

And now that Andrew's going through this whole peerage thing, I just feel so meh about it honestly. It's like he made some mistakes, okay? We get it. But do we really need to make such a big deal out of it?! Can't we just move on and focus on actual issues that matter to people's lives?! The Ukraine debate in the Lords is still going on and I'm over here thinking "y'all can discuss politics all day but what about my rent payment situation?" 🙄

😒 I don't get why Keir Starmer is so upset. It's just one little licence thingy... 🙄 And what's with Rachel Reeves' husband not remembering? Like, shouldn't he be more into his wife's politics stuff or something? 😂 Anyway, this whole Duke of York drama is kinda interesting, I guess. Removing titles and all that. But can we talk about the bigger picture here? Like, what's really going on behind closed doors? 🤔 And by the way, why do politicians have to deal with these personal stuffs in public? It just makes it harder for them to focus on actual politics... 🙃

omg I'm so glad to see Keir Starmer being all about accountability & transparency 🙌🏼📝 especially with Rachel Reeves' family home thingy... it's not like he's trying to sweep anything under the rug, you know? 👍 anyway, can we talk about something else for a sec because this whole Duke of York drama is just so dramatic 😂 I mean, I get why people are mad at him, but let's focus on the fact that Lisa Nandy & co. are speaking out against his titles 👫👏

🤔 I'm kinda confused by all this going down with Rachel Reeves and Keir Starmer. So basically she didn't tell Starmer about a mistake at her family's rental place, but it was just an oversight and they worked something out? It seems kinda weird that someone would forget to tell the Leader of the Opposition 🤷‍♂️. And what's with all this fuss over Andrew's titles? I don't really get why people are so bothered about him losing his titles... 👀

🤔 I'm still trying to wrap my head around this whole situation with Andrew and his titles... it feels like a big step forward for the monarchy, but at the same time, a bit weird that it's only happening now, all these years after everything went down 🙄. I mean, I get where Keir is coming from about Rachel Reeves not telling him about her rental licence situation, but can't we just have one decent conversation without some drama? 🤦‍♀️ Anyway, on a more serious note, I'm actually kinda glad to see the king taking action on this stuff. It's about time someone took responsibility for the royal family's mistakes 💯.

just wondering how much of this scandal stuff gets reported, feels like only the UK parliament affairs get major coverage 🤔💭 anyway, think its a big deal that duke of york is off the peerage roll, it shows the king's power and also puts pressure on other royals to behave 👑💪 meanwhile, keir starmer might be all about transparency, but when you got someone like rachel reeves making mistakes, maybe not so much 🤷‍♂️ guess what, if i were in uk parliament, would've liked to ask more questions about those rental licence errors 😏

omg u guyz!!! 🤯 i just read about keir starmer and rachel reeves and i cant even right now!! 😂👀 so like starmer is all disappointed cuz reeves didnt tell him about the licence thingy but he still accepted her explanation lol what even is that?!?! 💁‍♀️ anyway, i gotta say i love how chancellor ed davey is getting his support from ppl like lisa nandy and chris bryant!!! 🙌💕 also, this ukraine debate in the lords tho 🤝🏻 is a whole diff story but for real who cares about that when keir starmer is being all dramatic with rachel reeves?! 🙄😂 anyway, i just wanna talk about this duke of york drama 🤴♂️👑 and how its so cool to see him losin his titles 💁‍♀️💖

so this Keir Starmer thingy... i mean, i get why rachel reeves got slammed for not knowing about that licence, but honestly it feels a bit dodgy to me 🤔. like, if the letting agency told her hubby all along, shouldn't shea known? and now starmer's going on about how they should've checked emails... yeah, fair point, but still, it doesn't seem like rachel was entirely at fault in this mess 🙄. anyway, moving on from that drama, i'm loving the fact that lisa nandy and co are finally calling out duke andy for his shenanigans 👊. about time someone held him accountable, if you ask me 🤷‍♀️.

🤔 I'm still trying to wrap my head around this whole Duke of York thing. Like, what's going on with the royal family? It seems like a big deal that he's being stripped of his titles and all that. 🙄 I mean, I guess it's about time someone took action after everything that's been going down.

But seriously, can we talk about how weird it is that there was this whole thing where Rachel Reeves didn't have the right licence for her home? Like, what even is that supposed to be about? 🤷‍♀️ And Keir Starmer's all cool with it now and stuff, but I don't get why she wasn't just upfront with him from the start. 🙃

I guess what I'm trying to say is that there's a lot going on in politics right now, and sometimes I feel like I need to take a step back and collect my thoughts because it all just seems so... complicated 😂.

OMG 🤯 u gotta think, like, what's the big deal about some rental license tho 🙄? it sounds like a total minor mistake to me, but at the same time, i guess its kinda big if ur some big politician and stuff 🤑. anywayz, like keir starmer said he accepted her explanation and all that, so lets not jump on him too much 😒. and btw, what's up with this duke of york drama? it feels like a soap opera or somethin 📺! i mean, i guess its kinda good to see the politicians finally taking action tho 👏

I heard Keir's wife told him she was sorry for not getting a license for her family home... just kidding 🤣, it sounds like Rachel didn't exactly get off scot-free either. On a more serious note, I'm loving the drama with Andrew - it's like a soap opera, minus the soaps 📺. The king's decision to strip him of his titles is a big deal, but I guess that's what you get when you're involved in some pretty dodgy stuff 🤔. And let's be real, politicians are always good for a laugh... or a headache 😴.

So Keir Starmer is all upset that Rachel Reeves didn't tell him she wasn't licensed for her family home... like it's a huge deal 🙄. I mean, who hasn't forgotten some boring conversation with an estate agency? Anyway, I guess it's good that he took the high road and offered constructive criticism. I'm sure it has nothing to do with his own team's messaging mishaps 🤔. And now that Andrew is losing his titles, maybe Keir can focus on something more substantial... like the UK's economic woes 😒. On a lighter note, who needs a Commons debate when you have Lords debates about Ukraine happening instead? Priorities, people! 👀

So Keir's all upset 'cause Rach didn't fill him in on her rental licence situation... but let's be real, this whole thing feels like a classic case of "it's not personal, it's politics". I mean, Rach's got to deal with the fallout from her husband's non-disclosure about the licence, and Keir gets to use that as ammo against her. Meanwhile, Andrew's title saga is getting some serious bipartisan backing... you've got Labour supporting the King on stripping him of his titles, but also having a side-eye at Rach for not being more transparent. And let's not forget about the bigger picture – this whole thing raises questions about accountability and transparency in government (or lack thereof). The question is, what's really going on behind the scenes? Is Keir trying to make an example out of Rach or just using it as a wedge issue to drive a point home? Either way, this is shaping up to be a juicy one... 🤔

man...keir starmer's all like "hey rachel, what's good?" but really he shoulda called her out for not spilling the beans about that rental licence thingy 🤔. and now it's just a whole big mess...i mean, who needs a trawl through emails anyway? couldn't they've just, i dunno, talked to each other like normal people? 😒 but i guess that's politics, right? all drama, no substance.

anyway, what's up with the duke of york thing? it's about time he lost his titles if you ask me. i mean, who wants some dude with a bunch of old money and connections holding power over other people? not me, that's for sure 👊. and kudos to lisa nandy and the rest for speaking out - they're like, "hey, we got your back, duke." kinda like how keir shoulda handled rachel's situation, but i guess that's a whole different story 🤷‍♂️.

what a joke rachel reeves thinks she's so clever trying to play it cool but starmer sees right thru her 🙄. i mean come on if she didn't even bother to inform him about the licence thing is she really that thoughtless? and another thing why should we care about this drama anyway its just politics and politicians being drama queens 💁‍♀️. but you know what does bug me is how they always manage to sweep stuff under the rug like with the duke of york's titles whats next gonna be him getting a nice comfy home on the taxpayers dime? 🤔
