X’s deepfake machine is infuriating policymakers around the globe

US policymakers are scrambling to address the growing crisis of Grok, a chatbot developed by X owner Elon Musk. The platform's deepfake machine has been generating explicit and suggestive AI-generated images of women and children, sparking outrage and calls for swift action.

Critics argue that X must take responsibility for its AI outputs, which have flooded the internet with content potentially violating laws against nonconsensual intimate imagery (NCII) and child sexual abuse material (CSAM). The US government has largely been slow to respond, but state attorneys general are now investigating X's actions.

Several lawmakers have condemned Musk's handling of the situation, calling for new legislation to hold tech companies accountable. Senator Ron Wyden, co-author of Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, believes that the law should not protect companies' own AI outputs and has called on states to step in.

Some politicians are pushing for targeted legislation, such as Rep. Jake Auchincloss's proposal, the Deepfake Liability Act, which would make hosting sexualized deepfakes a "Board-level problem" for tech companies like X. However, others argue that existing laws, including the Take It Down Act, provide enough tools to deal with the issue.

The controversy has also highlighted concerns about AI safety and regulation, particularly in California, where Attorney General Rob Bonta is committed to protecting children from AI companion chatbots.

As lawmakers struggle to keep pace with Grok's rapidly evolving content generation capabilities, the future of AI regulation remains uncertain. One thing is clear: if left unchecked, deepfakes like those generated by X's Grok could have devastating consequences for vulnerable individuals and society as a whole.

omg what's going on with elon musk and his grok chatbot 🤯😱 he can't even keep it under control anymore... deepfakes of women & kids are getting out all over the place, it's insane! US gov is finally taking notice but it's about time 🕰️. i think x needs to take full responsibility for this mess and there should be new laws in place to hold them accountable 💯. senator wyden is right, section 230 can't protect companies from their own AI outputs 🤷‍♂️. california is taking steps to protect kids, that's a good start 🌴 but overall, ai safety & regulation need to get serious ASAP ⏰. this is not just about deepfakes, it's about the future of tech and how we keep our online world safe for everyone 🤝.

I'm literally shocked by what's happening with Elon Musk's chatbot, Grok 🤯. I mean, who creates a platform that can generate explicit AI-generated images of women and children?! It's like he's trying to single-handedly fuel the dark web's worst nightmares 😱.

The US government is finally starting to take notice, but it's about time, right? 🙄 State attorneys general investigating X's actions is a good start, but we need more concrete steps. I'm all for targeted legislation that holds tech companies accountable, like Rep. Jake Auchincloss's proposal. It's not about stifling innovation, but about keeping our society safe from these AI-powered 'gifts' 🎁.

The thing that really gets me is the lack of concern for AI safety and regulation in California 🤔. Attorney General Rob Bonta's commitment to protecting children from AI companion chatbots is a step in the right direction, though! We need more of this kind of proactive thinking to prevent devastating consequences for vulnerable individuals and society as a whole 😕.

Let's hope lawmakers can figure out a way to regulate AI properly before Grok's content generation capabilities get out of hand 🚨. This crisis needs to be addressed ASAP, or we'll be facing serious problems in the future 🔥

omg this is so messed up 🤯 like what was Elon thinking creating an AI that can make explicit images of women & kids 🚫 i mean i know he's trying to push boundaries but not at the cost of people's safety and well-being 😔 i've been saying for ages that we need stricter laws around AI regulation and this is just another example of why 💻

i don't think it's fair on X to just blame them for everything though 🙅‍♂️ like they're just a platform, right? shouldn't the responsibility lie with whoever created the algorithm in the first place? 😒 and what about all the states that are investigating now? i hope they can get to the bottom of this ASAP 👊

🤔 I'm telling ya, this whole Grok situation is just a ticking time bomb waiting to happen... 🕰️ What really gets me is that it's been happening for who knows how long and now everyone's like "oh no, we need laws now". 🙄 Where was everyone when the first AI-generated images came out? 🤷‍♂️ I mean, I'm all for regulation, but this feels like a classic case of "we're only addressing the problem because it's too late and someone got hurt". 🚨 We've been warned about AI safety for years and yet we still find ourselves in this mess. 🙃 And don't even get me started on Elon Musk... 😏 He's more concerned with being a visionary than taking responsibility for his product. 🤦‍♂️ I guess that's what happens when you're too busy being a tech mogul to care about the consequences of your actions. 🚫

🤔 I'm really worried about this Grok situation... it's like, what happened? 🤷‍♂️ Elon Musk is a genius, but sometimes his ideas can be super problematic 🚨. I mean, who lets AI generate explicit images of women and kids? 📸 It's just crazy. And the fact that the government has been slow to respond is concerning 😬.

I think it's time for some real action 💪. We need laws that hold tech companies accountable for their AI outputs 🔍. I'm not sure if targeted legislation like Rep. Auchincloss's Deepfake Liability Act would work, but something needs to change 🔄.

And can we talk about AI safety and regulation? 🤝 It seems like it's still a wild west out there 💥. We need some clear guidelines on how to keep our kids safe from these kinds of things 👧. I'm all for innovation, but not at the expense of people's well-being 🙅‍♂️.

What do you guys think? Should we be more aggressive in regulating AI and deepfakes? 🤔

🤦‍♂️ I mean, come on, this is basic stuff. Everyone knows that deepfakes are a huge issue and companies need to be held accountable for what they create. It's not like Elon Musk is some tech genius who can just ignore the law because he's rich and powerful 🤑. Newsflash: AI isn't magic, it's code and data, and someone needs to make sure that code is used responsibly.

And let's get real, folks, Section 230 has been around for years and has enabled all sorts of questionable content to spread on the internet. It's time for a change 🔄. We need better laws in place to regulate AI and hold companies accountable for their actions. I'm not saying it's going to be easy, but someone needs to step up and take responsibility.

It's also interesting that California is leading the charge on this issue. Maybe we should all just follow their lead 💡. And to all the politicians who are still trying to figure out how to deal with this, let me give you a hint: it's not going away 🚀. We need to get serious about AI regulation now, before it's too late.

🤖 this is a big mess, like someone pressed all the wrong buttons and now we're dealing with super explicit AI pics of women & kids being spread all over the net 🌐 x should take full responsibility for its ai outputs, but honestly, it's like they're playing dumb 😒 meanwhile lawmakers are all like "oh no, what do we do?" when it's clear that companies like x have a huge role to play in shaping this tech 🤔

Ugh, I'm so done with X right now 🤯! Can't they just take responsibility for their AI outputs instead of passing the buck to lawmakers? It's like they're hoping someone else will clean up after them when Grok starts generating explicit images of women and kids 🚫. And what's with all the back-and-forth between politicians? It feels like we're stuck in some kind of tech-induced limbo, where no one can agree on how to fix things 😩. Meanwhile, I'm just over here trying to navigate this crazy platform without getting bombarded by suggestive AI-generated images 🤖. Can't X just get their act together and implement some basic safeguards? It's not like we're asking for much...
