Gather your Materials
The first step in making your own candle wicks is to gather all the necessary materials. You’ll need cotton balls, scissors, wax, and a skewer or pencil.
Prepare the Cotton Balls
To start, take a cotton ball and gently pull it apart into thin strands. Try to keep the strands as even as possible. You’ll need about four strands for each candle wick.
Cut the Strands to Size
Using your scissors, cut the cotton strands to the desired length of your candle wick. A good rule of thumb is to cut them about an inch longer than your candle jar or mold.
Melt the Wax
Next, melt your wax in a double boiler or a heat-safe container set in boiling water. Be sure to use the appropriate amount of wax for the number of candles you will be making.
Dip the Wicks
Now it’s time to dip your cotton wicks into the melted wax. Hold the wick with the skewer or pencil and dip it into the wax. Make sure it is fully submerged and then lift it out and let the excess wax drip off.
Repeat the Dipping Process
After the excess wax has dripped off, dip the wick back into the wax and repeat the process until the wick is thick enough for your candle. This usually takes about 10-15 dips.
Let the Wicks Dry
Once your wicks are the desired thickness, hang them up to dry. You can attach them to a clothesline or use a paper clip to hang them from a hanger. Let them dry completely before using them in your candles.
Trim the Wicks
Before using your homemade wicks, be sure to trim the ends to the appropriate length. A good rule of thumb is to leave about 1/4 inch of wick above the surface of the wax.
Enjoy Your Homemade Candles
Congratulations, you’ve just made your own candle wicks! Now it’s time to use them to create your own homemade candles. Enjoy the warm glow and the satisfaction of knowing you made them yourself.
