2 SF Safeways to be redeveloped to add large housing complexes

San Francisco's Bernal Heights and Ocean Beach Safeway stores are set to undergo a dramatic transformation, as the grocery stores themselves will be temporarily closed and replaced with large housing complexes.

In Bernal Heights, a new, expanded Safeway store is slated to become part of a six-story building complex. The development includes 370 new apartments that will be available at market rate prices, along with a underground garage for residents and shoppers. However, there is currently no set timeline for the closure and construction process.

Similarly, in Ocean Beach, an eight-story housing complex is proposed for the site, bringing 526 new homes to the neighborhood. The existing store will remain closed during the construction process, but it's expected to reopen larger than before with all employees reassigned to nearby stores.

It appears that a single developer is behind both proposals, suggesting a unified approach to revamping San Francisco's grocery landscape. While the projects aim to bring in much-needed housing and investment, concerns about displacement and gentrification are likely to arise as these developments reshape the city's neighborhoods.

omg i cant believe what im reading... like who even thought it was a good idea to turn grocery stores into housing complexes?! 🀯 San Francisco is already so pricey now, dont they need the Safeway for the actual shopping? i mean sure more housing is needed but can't we just find another way to do it without destroying the places people live and work? πŸ€” and what about the ppl who cant afford to move out of their apartments cuz rent is too high? its gonna be super interesting to see how this all plays out in real life... will they actually make the Safeway stores back to normal after the construction is done? πŸ€‘

πŸ€” I'm kinda stoked about this development, but also super concerned at the same time... πŸŒ† San Francisco is already super pricey, and adding more apartments and housing will just bring in more people who can afford it... what about the ones who can't? 😟 We need affordable options for everyone, not just the ones with deep pockets. 🀝 I'm all for innovation and progress, but we gotta make sure it's not at the expense of our community... πŸ’Έ

I'm low-key worried about this development πŸ€”. I mean, I get that housing is a huge issue in SF, but don't they think about the people who actually shop at Safeway? Like, what about seniors or single parents who can't just move to a new neighborhood because it's "market rate" pricey πŸ’Έ? And what about the existing residents who might be priced out of their own homes? The gentrification thing is already happening in some parts of SF and I don't wanna see more people getting pushed out. Can we at least make sure that some affordable options are left behind for those who need them most? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

I'm not sure I love this idea πŸ€”... I mean, don't get me wrong, more housing is always a good thing, but it feels like we're sacrificing our community centers for the sake of progress. I can already imagine parents dropping off their kids at school and then having to navigate a whole new neighborhood just because the Safeway closed down πŸ’ΌπŸ«. And what about the families who currently live in those areas? Are they being priced out by these new developments? 🀞 It's all very well-intentioned, but I worry we're playing with fire here...

πŸ’‘ just thinkin' about this Safeway thing... like what even is a Safeway anymore? πŸ€” they're basically gettin' all their brick and mortar game swapped out for some fancy schmancy apartment complex 🏒😴 and it's not even like the new homes are super affordable or anything, market rate prices and all that jazz πŸ’Έ. and have you seen those numbers? 370 apartments in Bernal Heights and 526 in Ocean Beach? that's a lotta people gettin' priced out of their own neighborhoods 🚨🏠. i mean, yeah the city needs more housing but can't we just find ways to make it more affordable instead of just pushin' people around? 😐

πŸ€” This is just another example of how SF is changing its layout to suit whoever has the $$ πŸ’Έ. What happens to the people who can't afford market rate prices? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ The concept of community spaces like Safeway are slowly being pushed out by profit-driven housing complexes πŸ’πŸ“‰

I'm soooo down for more affordable housing options in SF 🀩! Like, 370 new apartments is a HUGE win, right? But, gotta wonder, what's the plan for all the existing residents who might get priced out of their own neighborhood πŸ€”? And, omg, did you see that chart showing how much gentrification is increasing in SF over the past decade? πŸ“Š It's like, 40% increase! That's crazy talk 😲. Anyways, I guess it's good to have some new developments and all, but we gotta keep an eye on this stuff to make sure it doesn't come at the expense of our community vibes 🌴.

Stats alert!

* SF median home price is over $1.4M πŸ’Έ
* 35% of low-income renters are displaced every year in SF πŸ‘‹
* Gentrification is increasing by 40% between 2015-2022 πŸ“ˆ

Anywayz, what do you guys think about this development?

I'm kinda stoked about this idea, but at the same time I'm worried it might get a bit out of hand πŸ€”. On one hand, who doesn't need more affordable housing options? It's crazy how San Francisco is still struggling with housing costs, and if these developments can bring in some market rate prices, that's a huge plus! Plus, it'll be awesome to have more amenities like underground garages – think of the stress-free shopping experience for all those new residents πŸ˜….

However, I'm not sure about the whole gentrification vibe πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. It's always hard to see neighborhoods changing in ways that might push out long-time residents or small businesses. Can we make sure that some of these units are actually reserved for low-income families or seniors? And what about the community impact? Will this just lead to a bunch of new high-rise buildings and no actual connection between neighbors?

But, I gotta admit, it's interesting to see one developer taking on such massive projects 🀝. Maybe they're onto something!

😬 I'm worried about what's happening to our local grocery stores in SF. It seems like progress is being made, but at what cost? πŸ€” Losing Safeway would be a big blow to Bernal Heights and Ocean Beach communities, where people rely on those stores for their daily needs. What about the low-income families who can't afford market rate prices? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ They'll struggle to find affordable housing too. We need to make sure that new developments like this benefit everyone, not just a select few πŸ’°

πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ San Francisco is killing me... who needs a Safeway when you can have a fancy new apartment complex? 🏠😴 I mean, I guess it's not all bad - more housing options are needed, and market rate prices might make it more accessible for some. But what about the people working at those stores? They'll just get reassigned... no big deal, right? πŸ˜’ It's like they're just pawns in a game of urban real estate. And the concerns about gentrification? Yeah, that's gonna be a fun conversation to have over a $4 coffee β˜•οΈ. Can't wait to see how this all plays out! πŸ‘€

idk why ppl r so opposed 2 change πŸ€” its not like they r gonna raze old houses 2 build fancy condos but at the same time i get it bout the gentrification thing, dont wanna see all the local shops & restaurants priced out of existenz πŸ“ˆ gotta think about affordability tho, some ppl might struggle 2 afford them market rate prices πŸ’Έ

I'm low-key concerned about this Safeway thingy... πŸ€” I mean, I get it, housing is a big deal, but what about the people who shop at those stores? We're talkin' seniors and low-income folks who might not have access to other grocery spots 'cause they can't afford them. I guess that's where the debate comes in – do we need more affordable housing options or are we prioritizin' convenience over community? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ Can't imagine walkin' from Bernal Heights to Ocean Beach to get some groceries... might be a bit of a trek, especially for those who aren't exactly tech-savvy.

Here's a rough idea of what the new Safeway complex could look like in Bernal Heights:

```
+---------------------------------------+
Grocery Store
+---------------------------------------+
Parking Lot
+---------------------------------------+
Underground Garage
+---------------------------------------+
Apartments
+---------------------------------------+
Market Rate Prices
```

And for Ocean Beach:

```
+---------------------------------------+
Empty Lot
+---------------------------------------+
Construction Site
+---------------------------------------+
8-Story Housing Complex
+---------------------------------------+
More Parking
```

Anyway, hope this gives you an idea of what I'm thinkin'... πŸ€“
