80-year-old Detroit-area bakery expands - Detroit Metro Times

Detroit-Area Bakery Expands with State-of-the-Art Facilities and New Jobs

Hamtramck's Metropolitan Baking Company, a beloved Detroit-area bakery that has been serving up steamed hot dog buns to local coney island restaurants for decades, has just expanded its operations in a major way. The 80-year-old business has added nearly 40% more production capacity with the completion of a new expansion project, which included the construction of 37,000 square feet of state-of-the-art facilities.

The company's president, George Kordas, grandson of the founder, is thrilled with the new addition, citing his father's vision to modernize the plant and increase efficiency. "It's amazing to see how far we've come," Kordas said in a statement. "I wish my grandfather could see this moment - the shiny new facilities and our reach across the country would certainly impress him."

The expansion includes not only increased production space but also a range of improvements for employees, including a new break room and lockers for staff who come from the local community. The company has also implemented new shipping docks to reduce the impact on neighborhood streets.

Metropolitan Baking Company is known for its high-quality bread products, which are sold under the Kordas brand name. In addition to hot dog buns, the company produces a range of other breads, including Pullman breads, brioche buns, and Kaiser rolls.

Despite being in an increasingly competitive market, Metropolitan Baking Company remains debt-free and committed to its conservative values. The company has declined grants and other opportunities on principle, instead choosing to focus on growing the business organically and taking its Detroit pride to customers across the country.

"We believe that a financially stable city can do more for its people and infrastructure," Kordas said. "We want to grow opportunities and take our Detroit pride to customers across the country."

OMG, I'm loving this expansion news!!! 🀩 It's amazing to see how much love and care Metropolitan Baking Company puts into their products and employees! The fact that they're committed to staying debt-free and true to themselves is really inspiring. 40% more production capacity? That's huge! πŸš€ And the new break room and locker facilities for staff are such a great addition. It shows they truly value their team members. I'm all about supporting local businesses, especially ones with a rich history like this bakery has. Detroit pride is everything! πŸ’–

Ugh, another company getting all the attention πŸ™„, I swear this expansion is just gonna bring more traffic to Hamtramck's streets and push out some of the local businesses that make it worth living here. They're talking about "growing opportunities" but what about the people who've been working there for years? Are they just gonna get pushed out because the company wants to expand its reach? πŸ€”

πŸžπŸ‘ I think it's awesome that Metropolitan Baking Company is still going strong after 80 years! The fact that they're debt-free and committed to their values is super impressive. It's great that they're not sacrificing their principles just to get grants or whatever. πŸ™ Their new facilities look amazing too, especially with the break room and lockers for employees. That shows they actually care about their staff, not just about making money. Plus, it's awesome that they're focusing on growing organically instead of trying to take shortcuts. It just goes to show you can be successful and still keep your integrity intact πŸ€‘

I'm telling you, this is some fancy footwork! They're expanding these facilities and creating jobs, but it's not like they're doing it out of the goodness of their hearts... I mean, have you seen the way they're talking about "growing opportunities" and taking Detroit pride to customers across the country? That just sounds like a PR spin job to me. What if they're actually trying to increase their market share and get in on some big contracts that could potentially put them at odds with other local businesses? I've heard rumors of a few major coney island restaurants already cutting ties with Metropolitan Baking Company over pricing disputes... this just doesn't add up πŸ˜’

omg I love when businesses in detroit expand and create new jobs πŸ€‘πŸ‘ it's so cool to see a family business like metropolitan baking company thrive after 80 years in the game! they're really setting an example for other companies by staying debt-free and true to their values πŸ’―. and it's awesome that they're giving back to the community too, with a new break room and lockers for staff 🀝. can't wait to see what the future holds for this amazing detroit bakery! πŸ‘

🍞️ so yeah i think its awesome that metropolitan baking company is expanding and keeping it debt-free, that shows they really care about their business and community πŸ™Œ. also the fact that they're adding new facilities and improving employee perks like a break room and lockers is super cool πŸ’ͺ. its great to see family-owned businesses doing well and growing organically, instead of relying on grants or loans πŸ€‘. i'm sure george kordas' grandpa would be proud of what he's accomplished 😊.

lol just saw this article about detroit bakery expanding like woah! they got new facilities and added 40% more production space 🀯 that's a big deal! and yaaas they're keeping it real with no debt or grants lol the president said his grandfather would be proud of what they've built. the best part? new break room and lockers for employees πŸžπŸ’Ό

So, another company expanding in Hamtramck πŸ€”... like it's going to change the world or something. I mean, 40% more production capacity is cool, I guess. And a new break room? That's just what every employee wants - a place to get their lunch and gossip with coworkers πŸ’β€β™€οΈ. But seriously, it's great that they're investing in their staff, even if it's just because of some fancy PR stunt.

And can we talk about how long it takes for companies to expand when there are other pressing issues in the city? I mean, debt-free and all that jazz... sure, but what about the homeless crisis or the lack of affordable housing? It feels like businesses are just looking out for themselves these days πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. Still, I guess it's nice to see some growth happening in Hamtramck - just don't expect me to be too excited about it 😐

I'm loving how Met Baking Co is expanding without sacrificing its core values 😊. 🍞️ you know what's wild, I was at this food festival last weekend and they had these insane maple bacon donuts from a small bakery in Brooklyn... anyway back to detroit's metropolitan baking co. i think it's awesome that they're staying true to their values and focusing on organic growth, like, who needs grants or investor funding when you've got a solid business plan? πŸ€‘ also, 37k sq ft of production space is no joke, must be crazy to work in there all day...
