Detroit-Area Bakery Expands with State-of-the-Art Facilities and New Jobs
Hamtramck's Metropolitan Baking Company, a beloved Detroit-area bakery that has been serving up steamed hot dog buns to local coney island restaurants for decades, has just expanded its operations in a major way. The 80-year-old business has added nearly 40% more production capacity with the completion of a new expansion project, which included the construction of 37,000 square feet of state-of-the-art facilities.
The company's president, George Kordas, grandson of the founder, is thrilled with the new addition, citing his father's vision to modernize the plant and increase efficiency. "It's amazing to see how far we've come," Kordas said in a statement. "I wish my grandfather could see this moment - the shiny new facilities and our reach across the country would certainly impress him."
The expansion includes not only increased production space but also a range of improvements for employees, including a new break room and lockers for staff who come from the local community. The company has also implemented new shipping docks to reduce the impact on neighborhood streets.
Metropolitan Baking Company is known for its high-quality bread products, which are sold under the Kordas brand name. In addition to hot dog buns, the company produces a range of other breads, including Pullman breads, brioche buns, and Kaiser rolls.
Despite being in an increasingly competitive market, Metropolitan Baking Company remains debt-free and committed to its conservative values. The company has declined grants and other opportunities on principle, instead choosing to focus on growing the business organically and taking its Detroit pride to customers across the country.
"We believe that a financially stable city can do more for its people and infrastructure," Kordas said. "We want to grow opportunities and take our Detroit pride to customers across the country."
