80-year-old Detroit-area bakery expands - Detroit Metro Times

Local Favorite Expands, Brings Jobs to Hamtramck Community

A beloved Detroit-area bakery has grown and expanded its operations, adding nearly 40% to its production capacity while hiring 25 new employees. Metropolitan Baking Company, a family-run business that's been serving the community since 1945, has invested in state-of-the-art facilities to meet growing demand for its products.

The company's hot dog buns have gained a reputation among local coney island restaurants, but now they're also supplied to eateries across the US and even Yankee Stadium in New York City. The bakery's product lineup includes Pullman breads, brioche buns, Kaiser rolls, and more, all made with high-quality ingredients.

In an effort to improve working conditions for its employees – many of whom live within a five-mile radius of the bakery – Metropolitan Baking Company has built new break rooms and lockers. The company has also implemented shipping docks that will reduce truck traffic in the neighborhood.

"We're proud to be debt-free and committed to our conservative values," said George Kordas, president of Metropolitan Baking Company. "We believe a financially stable city can invest in its people and infrastructure, leading to better schools and public safety."

Kordas credits his team for their dedication and hard work, saying they've been confident in the expansion from the start. The bakery now produces 240 dozen buns per minute and roughly 140 loaves of bread per minute, using over 800,000 pounds of flour each week.

The company's commitment to quality and community has earned it a loyal customer base across the country. As Kordas puts it, "We want to grow opportunities and take our Detroit pride to customers everywhere."

I gotta say, this expansion by Metropolitan Baking Company is like a perfect example of how private sector growth can actually benefit the community 🀝. On one hand, you've got 25 new jobs being created, which is awesome for the Hamtramck folks who are already struggling with affordable housing and whatnot πŸ˜’. And let's not forget about the economic stimulus it'll bring to the area – more money circulating around means better public services too πŸ’Έ.

But here's the thing: this also brings up questions about corporate responsibility and where exactly does the profit go? πŸ€‘ Are we talking tax breaks, subsidies, or something else entirely? I mean, debt-free and all that jazz sounds nice on paper, but what's really driving this growth? Is it just good old-fashioned capitalism or is there a more complex dynamic at play here? πŸ€”

And then there's the interesting comment from George Kordas about 'conservative values'... does he mean like, conservative fiscally or socially? Either way, it raises an eyebrow – are we talking politics or just good business sense? πŸ“Š I'm curious to see how this all shakes out!

I'm so glad we're investing in jobs in Hamtramck now... like, only after decades of people living there were able to afford their own houses 🀣. But seriously, 40% expansion is a big deal for the community, especially with those new break rooms and shipping docks to reduce truck traffic. I'm loving that they're prioritizing quality over quantity too – who needs super cheap buns when you can have ones made from actual high-quality ingredients? πŸ’―

πŸžπŸ’Ό I'm so stoked for Metropolitan Baking Company! It's awesome that they're expanding and bringing in new jobs to the Hamtramck community πŸ™Œ. All those new employees must be hyped to see their hard work paying off πŸ’ͺ. And, I mean, who wouldn't want a job at a company with such a cool history? Like, 1945 is old school πŸ”₯! The fact that they're investing in shipping docks and break rooms for their employees is also super thoughtful πŸ€—. It's clear that they value their team members beyond just making good bread (although, let's be real, that's pretty great too 😊). Kudos to George Kordas for keeping it real about his company's values – debt-free and committed to quality? More like, debt-free and committed to awesomeness πŸ’―!

I think this is awesome news for Hamtramck πŸ™Œ! It's great that they're investing in new facilities and hiring more people, especially after being debt-free for so long πŸ’Έ. I'm actually kinda stoked that this bakery is expanding πŸŽ‰! They're not only making some awesome treats but also creating jobs for people in their community πŸ‘₯. Plus, it's awesome that they're proud of being debt-free and committed to their community values πŸ’ΌπŸ‘

idk about this expansion thingy... i mean dont get me wrong, its awesome that they're hiring new peeps and stuff πŸ€‘ but 40% increase in production capacity? seems a bit sus to me. also, shipping docks in the neighborhood? isnt that just gonna cause more traffic and noise pollution? and what about the environmental impact of all those trucks rolling by? we should be thinking about that kinda thing too 🌎
