85-year-old woman fatally stabbed in her Bed-Stuy home, 1 person in custody, NYPD says

An elderly Brooklyn woman's life was brutally cut short when she was found fatally stabbed in her Bed-Stuy home late Tuesday night. Julia Boomer, 85, suffered multiple stab wounds before paramedics took her to Kings County Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries just a short time later.

According to authorities, Boomer's daughter made the distressing discovery and promptly called 911, prompting an emergency response from police officers. Detectives are now focusing their attention on Boomer's 22-year-old grandson as a potential suspect in the case, although it is unclear at this point whether his involvement was intentional or part of a psychotic episode.

Police took the young man into custody several hours after the attack occurred, with charges still pending by mid-week. His mother had attempted to take him to a custody hearing regarding his minor child earlier that day, but he became agitated and did not follow through with the plan. The investigation is ongoing, but officials believe the attack may have been committed while Boomer was in her apartment alone.

The building's owner, Ali Mohamed, expressed his shock and sadness at the news of Boomer's death, stating that "a family should protect the older person." This tragic event marks the first homicide in the 79th Precinct this year, a precinct that has seen eight reported killings in each of 2024 and 2025. Despite this uptick in violent crime, citywide homicides have declined by over 20% compared to the previous year.

As the investigation continues, detectives are working to piece together the events surrounding Boomer's death and determine whether her grandson played a role in her fatal stabbing.

🤔 I don't wanna be insensitive or anything, but I think we need to consider that maybe this young guy wasn't in his right mind when he did what he did? His mom was trying to take him to a custody hearing and he freaked out... it's like, some people can just snap, you know? 🤕 And his grandma was alone in her apartment, that's not easy for anyone. I don't want to excuse or justify anything, but maybe we should try to look at the bigger picture here? Maybe there are some underlying issues that need to be addressed? I'm not saying he's off the hook or anything, but... 🤷‍♀️

just saw this and it's crazy how old you gotta be before they start worrying about u... I mean, 22 is super young to just decide to stab someone like that 🤯, but at the same time if he was having some kind of mental breakdown or something, that changes things a lot. idk what to make of this, feels like there's not enough info yet tho

🤕 my heart goes out to Julia's family 😔 she was just an elderly woman trying to live life 🌞 anyone think it's crazy that 22-yr-olds are being suspected for these things? 🤯 can't they be held accountable without some sort of mental health evaluation first? 🤝

anyway, i'm worried about this building... 🏢 how safe is it if someone's gonna stab their grandma in peace? 😱 and what about the 79th precinct? 🚔 we gotta ask why homicides are up in 2025? 📊 not to mention all these other violent crimes last year 😬 seems like we're just moving towards chaos 💥

😔 This is just so heartbreaking 🤕. I'm still trying to process how someone can do something so senseless to their own family member 💔. I mean, 22 is way too young to be dealing with that kind of stress and emotions 😩. And the fact that his mom was trying to take him to a custody hearing earlier in the day just shows how out of control this situation is 🤯.

I'm also thinking about Julia's life and what an amazing woman she must have been 💪. I can only imagine how her daughter must be feeling right now 😭. It's just devastating that her grandson could do this to her 🤕.

It's funny that the building owner said "a family should protect the older person" 🙄. Like, where was the protection in all of this? 🤔. I'm definitely hoping for a resolution soon and some justice for Julia and her loved ones 💕.

OMG 🤯 just heard about this senseless murder of Julia Boomer and it's breaking my heart 😭. A 22-yr-old grandson is being looked at as a suspect, but maybe we're jumping to conclusions too quickly? His mom had plans to take him to a custody hearing for his kid earlier that day but he freaked out 🤯. I'm all for holding people accountable, but let's not assume the worst just yet.

I mean, what's going on with our mental health system in NYC?! 🤷‍♀️ Why can't we get better support for these families? It's like they're stuck in a vicious cycle of trauma and violence 💔. We need to do more to help these people, not just punish them.

And I'm so sad that this is the first homicide in the 79th Precinct this year 🤕. Eight reported killings already in 2024 and 2025? That's just crazy 🙅‍♀️. But at least citywide homicides are down by 20%... that's a start, right? 🎉

Let's hope justice is served for Julia Boomer and her family 🤞. We need more kindness and compassion in our society, not just punishment 💖 #JusticeForJulia #MentalHealthMatters #StopTheViolence

OMG, I'm still trying to process this 🤯... like, an elderly woman is brutally stabbed to death in her own home? It's so sad and senseless 💔. I mean, I know crime can happen anywhere, but it's just really devastating when it happens to someone who's usually harmless 😔. The fact that her grandson might be involved is super scary too... like, what could've triggered him to do something so violent? 🤔 Anyway, my thoughts are with Boomer's family and loved ones during this incredibly tough time 💕.

This senseless violence is just another example of how our society is failing its most vulnerable members 🤕. I mean, think about it, an 85-year-old lady who was just minding her own business at home and suddenly gets stabbed to death by her own grandson. It's like we're living in a horror movie where the monsters are not ghosts or vampires, but our own family members! 💀

And what's with the lack of support for elderly folks? I mean, this woman was alone in her apartment when the attack happened. Where was her caregiver? Was she even allowed to have one? It's like we're abandoning our seniors to fend for themselves.

The fact that the building owner is blaming the victim's family for not protecting her is just ridiculous. That's like saying a fire department is responsible for preventing fires in a building, not the people who live there! 🚒

We need to take a hard look at how we're treating our seniors and our communities. We can't just blame individual perpetrators or say that violent crime rates are going down when they clearly aren't. It's time for some real action on this issue! 💪

Ugh 🤯, this is just another example of how messed up our society is when it comes to family dynamics. I mean, can't you do better than stabbing your own grandma to death? 😡 The fact that his mom tried to take him to a custody hearing and he freaked out on her... what's wrong with this kid? 🤦‍♂️ And the building owner is just shaking his head like "oh poor Julia"... where was she when all this was going down? 🤔 It's not like she just sat around twiddling her thumbs while some psycho stabbed her. 🚮

🤦‍♂️ I mean, come on, if you're gonna go into your elderly grandma's apartment alone at night, especially after she's been dealing with some family drama, it's just asking for trouble! I'm not saying the grandson is definitely guilty or anything, but his behavior earlier that day was pretty red flaggy. Like, who becomes agitated during a custody hearing and doesn't follow through on plans? 🤔 It just raises more questions than answers at this point. And what's with all these young people thinking they can just stab their elderly relatives to death like it's no big deal? 😡 I mean, we need to be talking about community policing and mental health services here, not just throwing someone in jail without a thorough investigation. 🙄

What a senseless tragedy 🤕💔...can't even imagine being in that situation and having to call 911 on your own family member. The fact that it might've been a psychotic episode or a intentional act is still unclear, but either way, justice will be served 💯. I do hope the investigators can get to the bottom of this ASAP so the family can finally find some closure 😔.

Oh my gosh I'm like totally shocked 😱😢 this is such a terrible thing that happened to Julia 🤗 she was just an elderly woman trying to live her life and now she's gone 💔 my heart goes out to her family especially her daughter who found her body and had to go through all that trauma 😭 it's just heartbreaking I hope the detectives can find some answers and bring closure to the family soon ❤️

I'm totally convinced that the 22-year-old grandson is totally innocent 🙄 and was just an unlucky bystander who happened to be there when his poor grandma got stabbed to death 😴. I mean, who tries to take their own kid to custody and then gets all agitated? That's not someone who's a psycho or violent at all... more like a loving parent trying to do the right thing 🙃. And what's with the police jumping on him so fast? Can't they just wait for some actual evidence before making assumptions? This whole thing is just a total miscarriage of justice 🤷‍♂️, in my opinion 😎

🤯 This is just getting crazy... a whole family turned against grandma like that? I'm not buying into the 'psychotic episode' excuse though 🙄, someone needs to get a grip on their life and take responsibility for their actions. The fact that his mom even tried to take him to custody and he snapped like that is wild too 😲. And now the whole precinct's dealing with this? 🚨 It's just another day in Brooklyn... can't we all just get along? 😔

OMG u guys 🤯 I cant even right now... Julia Boomer was such a sweetheart 😊 & I hope whoever did this is held accountable 💔 22 yrs old tho, that's like half her age lol what were they thinking?! 🤷‍♀️ My heart goes out to her family esp her daughter who found the body 🤕 & now she's gonna have to live with this guilt for the rest of her life 😭 79th precinct has had a lot of killings this yr tho, hope they catch the perps ASAP 💥

😔 this is just devastating news... can't believe someone so young would do something like that to their own grandma. but at the same time, it's heartbreaking for the family & friends who are dealing with all this trauma 🤕. it's also worrying to think about how mental health affects our younger generation... maybe we should be providing more resources & support for them instead of just locking 'em up? 💡 still so many questions unanswered, but one thing's for sure - no one deserves to die like that 😢.

it's just so sad... a life cut short like that 🤕... you'd think with all the advancements we have in crime prevention and mental health support, this wouldn't still happen. but i guess old age can be tough to cope with and sometimes people just lose it. but what really gets me is how our city's violent crime numbers are going up despite a general decline in homicides overall... like, what's behind that? is it more people on the streets, or is there something else at play? 🤔

OMG, that's so senseless 🤯. Can you imagine being stabbed to death in your own home? 😱 It's like something straight out of a horror movie. I feel for the family and friends who are dealing with this devastating loss. 22 years old is way too young to be involved in something like this... was he having some kind of breakdown or was it just a really bad day? 🤔 I hope justice is served soon, but for now, my heart goes out to Julia's loved ones 😓

the pain of losing someone so precious is like a dark cloud that settles on everything it touches... i mean, can't we all just wrap our heads around the fact that one wrong move can take away an entire lifetime of love and memories? 🤕 this poor family's life was shattered in an instant, and now they're left to pick up the pieces. the question is, how do we break this cycle of violence and senselessness? it's like, we talk about so many things being out of control, but what if our own minds were the biggest obstacle to overcome? 🤯

This is getting out of hand! 🚨💔 I mean, can't we do better than that? 79th Precinct sees 8 reported killings already this year? What's going on with our city's priorities? Shouldn't we be investing more in community programs and mental health services to prevent such tragedies? It just seems like we're reacting to symptoms rather than addressing the root causes. And now, a grandma gets stabbed to death by her own grandson... it's just not right! 🤯 We need to rethink our approach to crime prevention and make sure that everyone has access to support systems, no matter what their age or background. And can we please talk about gun control? I mean, is this kind of violence really the result of easy access to firearms? It feels like we're just patching up a symptom rather than taking on the real problem... 😕
