A Journalist Reported From Palestine. YouTube Deleted His Account Claiming He’s an Iranian Agent.

In February 2024, without warning, YouTube deleted the account of independent British journalist Robert Inlakesh. His YouTube page featured dozens of videos documenting Israel's military occupation of the West Bank. All that footage was gone.

The tech giant initially claimed Inlakesh's account violated YouTube's community guidelines. Months later, Google justified his account termination by alleging his page contained spam or scam content. However, nearly two years after his account was deleted, YouTube provided a separate explanation for the termination: a connection to an Iranian influence campaign.

YouTube declined to provide evidence to support this claim, stating that the company doesn't discuss how it detects influence operations. Inlakesh remains unable to make new Google accounts, preventing him from sharing his video journalism on the largest English-language video platform.

Even though Inlakesh worked for the Iranian state-owned media organization Press TV in 2019-2021, he claimed that his independent content should not have been deleted. The vast majority of his videos predated or postdated his stint at Press TV.

In July 2023, YouTube deleted Inlakesh's private backup account. Google, YouTube's parent company, later deleted his Google account, including his Gmail and archive of documents and writings. Google claimed that Inlakesh's account was terminated due to "scam, deceptive or spam content."

YouTube initially accused Inlakesh of "severe or repeated violations of our Community Guidelines." However, an internal response from Google stated that Inlakesh's account had been terminated owing to "scam, deceptive or spam content."

A YouTube spokesperson later claimed that Inlakesh's channel was terminated in February 2024 as part of their ongoing investigations into coordinated influence operations backed by the Iranian state. The termination meant all other accounts associated with Inlakesh were also deleted.

When asked for evidence to support this claim, a YouTube spokesperson replied that they don't "disclose specifics of how we detect coordinated influence operations." Instead, they referred The Intercept to Google's Threat Analysis Group quarterly bulletins.

The Threat Analysis Group's bulletin states that in February 2024, 37 YouTube channels were deleted due to an investigation into coordinated influence operations linked to Iran. Four of the terminated accounts shared content critical of the Israeli government and its actions in the ongoing Israel-Gaza war.

Critics argue that such censorship is part of a pattern of pro-Israeli censorship among Big Tech companies. Google has been accused of deleting content related to Palestine and criticizing Israel, as well as censoring journalists who cover sensitive topics.

YouTube's community guidelines have become increasingly subjective, leading to inconsistent and vague explanations for account terminations. The company initially claimed Inlakesh violated their guidelines but later justified his termination with dubious claims about Iranian influence operations.

Many experts believe that such actions amount to censorship and are detrimental to free speech. Journalists like Robert Inlakesh play a crucial role in holding powerful governments accountable, and their work should be protected, not deleted without evidence or due process.

🤔 this is so messed up I feel bad for robert inlakesh he was just doing his job as an independent journalist but youtube is like super strict about what content they allow online its all about control and it affects a lot of people who want to share their voices without being silenced 🗣️

🤔 this all feels super sus... first they say he did something bad then later its some shady Iranian influence thing? 🚫 google & youtube need to step up their game and give us some real answers why his account got deleted like 3 times already! 📊 what's the point of having community guidelines if they're just gonna use them as an excuse for censorship?! 🙄

come on... 😒 what's going on with YouTube these days? first they delete some guy's account saying it's spam, then months later it's something else entirely... Iran influence campaign? 🤔 come on, that sounds like a pretty big deal to just not have any evidence for. and now Robert Inlakesh is stuck because of his old Google account, which got deleted too... it's just so frustrating. and what's with the community guidelines being all subjective and vague? if you're gonna delete someone's account, at least have the decency to explain why in a way that makes sense. 🙄

i was just watching this funny vid of david after dinner trying to make a cake and it ended up looking like a bloody mess lol 🤣 what's even more hilarious is when he tried to put the icing on top and it all fell off again ️😂 i mean who needs a perfect cake when you can have entertainment like that? anyway, back to robert inlakesh... i'm not sure how much more evidence youtube needs to provide before they just give him an account back. it's crazy how much power these companies think they have over what we can and can't say online 🤔

Ugh 🤯, I'm so upset about this guy's account being deleted from YouTube! He was just doing his job as an independent journalist and sharing the truth about Israel's occupation of the West Bank. It's crazy that he can't even make a new Google account now 🤔. The fact that they're saying it's because of some 'influence campaign' but not showing any evidence is, like, totally suspicious 😒. I mean, shouldn't there be more transparency when it comes to censorship on social media? It's like, really bad for free speech and it's affecting journalists who are just trying to do their job 📰. What if this sets a precedent for other independent journalists to get deleted too? 🤕

omg u no what's going on with robert inlakesh?? 🤯 so youtube just DELETED LIKE ALL HIS VIDEOS & ACCOUNTS without even explianin why lol! its like they didnt wanna let ppl see whats goin on in israel, especially when its about palestine 🌴

im all for free speech tho, and i think youtubers like inlakesh r doin a great job of exposin the truth. dont think he was part of no iranian influence camp or whatever youtube said lol. thats just censur imo 👎 google & youtube need 2 be more transparent about why they're deletin ppl's accounts. its not cool when u cant even make new google accounts anymore 🤷‍♀️

🤔 I'm really worried about this 🚨. The fact that YouTube just deletes an entire account with no explanation apart from some vague claim of Iranian influence 🤷‍♂️ is super concerning. It's like they're trying to silence a journalist who was doing important work exposing human rights abuses 🌟.

And it gets even weirder when you consider that this isn't the first time Inlakesh has had his account terminated 🙅‍♂️. First, it was for "spam" or "scam content", but later they claimed it was due to Iranian influence 🤑. It's like they're trying to create a narrative where Inlakesh is some kind of agent provocateur 💁‍♀️.

The thing that really gets me is that YouTube refused to provide any evidence for their claims 🤐. Like, what exactly are they worried about? Is it the content itself or just the fact that it's critical of Israel? 😒

We need to be talking about this more 👊. The impact on free speech and journalism can't be ignored 💥. We need better transparency from these tech giants and greater protection for journalists like Inlakesh 📚💻

man this is wild 🤯 i remember when youtube first started out it was all about free speech and independent journalism... now it's just getting censored left and right like what happened to robert inlakesh his content got deleted and he can't even make a new google account it's like they're silencing ppl who are speaking truth to power 🤐 i feel bad for him and for all the other journalists out there who are trying to hold those in power accountable... it's not right that big tech companies are getting away with this kind of censorship 💔

omg 🤯 the way youtube is being super sketchy about why they deleted robert inlakesh's account is just so suspicious 😒 i mean come on, first it's community guidelines, then spam or scam content, and now iranian influence campaign? 🤑 these explanations are all kinda fishy 🐟 and it's like google is hiding something from us 🤫 anyone else think this is some kinda censorship game being played by big tech companies against journalists who dare to speak truth to power 💬

I think its shady how youtube is basically claiming they deleted robert inlakesh's account cuz of iranian influence... 🤔 like they cant even provide any evidence to back it up? and now hes unable to make new google accounts which makes me super worried about the future of free speech online 🚨

man this is so whack! 🤯 youtube is basically saying they dont care about the content just wanna silence the truth 🙅‍♂️ robert inlakesh was a journalist doin his job & gettin deleted for it 😡 what if its not even true that he had some kinda tie to iran? 🤔 youtube dont wanna give evidence so thats like, proof of their bias against the guy 🚫 and yeah google is basically a big brother in the tech world 👀 they shouldnt be able to just delete peoples accounts without a good reason 🤷‍♂️ this is censorship at its finest 😢

lol what's up guys i'm just saying youtube is being super sketchy with this robert inlakesh guy 🤔 he was doing journalism and sharing vids about israel's military occupation of the west bank but suddenly all his footage gets deleted without any warning 🚨 and now google is like oh no our community guidelines were violated 😒 but it turns out they're just making up excuses 🙄 first it's spam content then it's scam content and now it's Iranian influence operations 🤥 i mean what even is an influence campaign 💸 and why can't they just provide some evidence 📝 instead of saying we don't wanna disclose our secrets 🤐 it's like google and youtube are censoring journalists who try to hold powerful governments accountable 👮‍♂️ and that's not cool at all 😔

This is just another example of how Big Tech can be used as a tool for government manipulation 🤥. I mean, think about it - an independent journalist like Robert Inlakesh is deleted from YouTube because his channel is critical of Israel's actions in the West Bank? That sounds suspiciously like censorship to me 🚫. And what's even more disturbing is that Google is refusing to provide evidence for their claims about Iranian influence operations - basically saying "we're not gonna tell you how we're doing it, but trust us, it's legit" 🙄.

This just highlights the problem of unchecked corporate power and government influence over the media landscape. If journalists like Inlakesh can't even report on sensitive topics without fear of censorship, then what's the point of having a free press? And let's not forget that this is all happening under the guise of "protecting" society from fake news or misinformation 🤔.

It's time for some real reform - we need to hold these companies accountable for their actions and ensure that our rights as journalists are protected. Otherwise, we risk losing the very fabric of democracy 📰💪

It's crazy how YouTube just goes around deleting accounts willy-nilly 🤯. I mean, you've got this guy, Robert Inlakesh, who's been documenting Israel's military occupation of the West Bank for years... and then suddenly his entire channel is gone 💥. No warning, no explanation, just "community guidelines" or some other fancy reason to get rid of him 🤷‍♂️.

It's not like he was working for Press TV or anything, he was an independent journalist who happened to have worked with them in the past 📺. And now his entire body of work is gone, including his private backup account which just got deleted too 🚫.

I don't think it's a coincidence that YouTube only started talking about Iranian influence operations after they already had him terminated 😒. It's like they're trying to cover their own tracks and make it look like he was in on some sort of conspiracy 💔.

It's all just so suspicious, you know? 🤔 I mean, what are the chances that 37 YouTube channels got deleted at the same time due to some Iranian influence operation? 🤯 It doesn't add up.

🤔 This is just wild 🚀. I mean, who gets their account deleted without even being warned? And then you find out it's because of "Iranian influence campaign" but no concrete proof is given? That doesn't sit right with me at all. It's like they're just trying to silence someone who's speaking truth to power. 🤐

And can we talk about how this affects independent journalists? They're already under so much pressure to report the facts without bias, and now you're telling them that if you do report on a sensitive topic like Israel-Palestine, they might just get their account deleted? That's not freedom of speech, that's corporate control. 🙅‍♂️

I think it's time for these big tech companies to be held accountable for what they're doing. We need to make sure that journalists can report on whatever topics they want without fear of censorship or reprisal. It's the right thing to do, and it's what we expect from our democratic societies. 💪

omg 🤯 i'm so done with youtube's censorship 🚫 - first they say it's spam, then it's an Iranian influence campaign... like what even is going on here? 🤔 it's like they're trying to silence robert inlakesh for speaking truth to power 💬 his work was groundbreaking and shed light on some serious human rights issues 🌎

and can we talk about how this is just another example of big tech companies deciding what's "acceptable" content 📺? news organizations like press tv are supposed to be the watchdogs, not the ones being silenced 🗣️ google and youtube need to step up their game and provide some real evidence instead of just making stuff up 🔮

anyway, it's high time we hold these companies accountable for their actions 💯 let's not forget that journalists like inlakesh are the backbone of our democracy 📰

🚨 this is total BS 🤯, youtube just makes up excuses when they delete ppl's accounts 👎. first it was "community guidelines" then suddenly it's "spam content" and now they're saying it's connected to iranian influence campaigns? 🤔 i mean come on, who gets deleted from youtube without any concrete evidence? 🤑 journalists like inlakesh are the ones who hold those in power accountable, not some propagandist who's just spewing hate speech 💁‍♀️. the truth is, big tech companies are just trying to silence dissenting voices and protect their own interests 💸. youtube needs to come clean about how they're really detecting "influence operations" 🤐 because it's clear they're hiding something 🤥
