A new documentary aims to chronicle Chicago under ICE occupation. It’s a work in progress.

Chicago's immigration landscape is being captured on film in a new documentary, "Shouldering Sanctuary," which aims to humanize the city's response to federal immigration enforcement operations launched by President Donald Trump. The 12-month production is still a work in progress, but it promises to provide a nuanced and grounded perspective on the issue.

Filmmakers Fatima Omar and Ian Resnick are joined by artist Cliff Questel, who sketches courtroom scenes without cameras allowed inside the Downtown building. His drawings offer a unique insight into the inner workings of the immigration court system, which is often shrouded in mystery for those outside.

The documentary explores Chicago's response to Trump's executive orders on immigration and delves into the lives of individuals affected by these policies. It features interviews with local politicians, advocates, and community members, as well as footage from protests and rallies.

One key aspect of the film is its focus on characterization and storytelling. By using a combination of hotseat interviews, bodycam footage, and videos from social media, Omar and Resnick aim to create a more personal connection with their audience. The screenings will be followed by discussions with local politicians and advocates, who will share their perspectives on the issue.

The filmmakers are also working to capture moments of community and resilience in the face of adversity. They acknowledge that portraying ordinary members of the public can be challenging when the stakes are high, but they believe that this is crucial in conveying the human impact of immigration policies.

"Shouldering Sanctuary" will screen at the Edge Theater in Edgewater on Thursday, with clips available online through the Truth & Documentary team's YouTube channel and Media Burn Archive website. Tickets are free and can be reserved online, with donations requested for families or individuals impacted by ICE operations.

you know how it was back when Obama was president? we used to think immigration was gonna get a lot easier under him, but little did we no what trump had planned 🤯 anyway, this doc "shouldering sanctuary" sounds like it's gonna give us a real insight into chicago's response to all the trump policies. i love that they're focusing on characterization and storytelling - it's so rare you see immigration issues portrayed in a human way. and it's awesome they're doing these community screenings with discussions afterwards, that sounds super important. my only hope is they don't get too many of those sketchy ICE agents in the film lol

I think it's really cool that there's a documentary about Chicago's immigration issues 🎥🌆. I mean, we're living in 2025 and stuff like this is still happening right under our noses, but people are finally using film to tell the human side of things 💡. The fact that they're doing interviews with local politicians and community members, as well as showing protests and rallies, gives me hope that it'll be a real eye-opener for people who might not know what's really going on 🤔. I love how the filmmakers are trying to capture moments of resilience and community – we need more stories like that right now ❤️. And the best part? It's free and anyone can watch it online or at the screening event, so let's get behind this doc and spread some awareness 📚👍

I'm a bit skeptical about this docu, don't get me wrong, it sounds like they're tryin' to do somethin' good here 🤔... but I mean, Chicago's already been doin' some pretty cool stuff when it comes to immigrant rights, you know? Like, have you seen all the community orgs they've got poppin' up around town? They're doin' a lot of great work on their own.

Still, this docu might be a good way to humanize the issue and make people more aware of what's goin' on. I mean, we gotta keep showin' that there are real people behind these policies, not just numbers and stats 📊... But at the same time, I don't know if it'll really make a difference in the grand scheme of things. We'll see how it plays out when it hits the big screen! 👀

omg i just saw that film "Shouldering Sanctuary" is about chicago's immigration situation 🤯 what's the deal with trump's executive orders on immigration? like how did that even happen? and i'm curious about the community resilience part, can you imagine living in a city where ICE is always lurking around? 🤔 do they have any plans to screen this film in other cities too?

I just watched a trailer for this documentary and I'm intrigued. It's great that they're trying to humanize the city's response to federal immigration enforcement ops. I mean, we don't get to see behind the scenes of those courts, do we? 🤔 Artists like Cliff Questel are doing some amazing work sketching out what happens inside. And it's cool that they're sharing personal stories from people affected by Trump's policies. It's definitely gonna be a thought-provoking film, especially with all the politics going on around immigration. I'm looking forward to watching it and seeing how it turns out! 🎥

🤔 I'm not sure why we need a documentary to show us how immigration courts work... like we don't know it already 🙄. But I guess this one's trying to humanize the issue and make people think about what's really going on behind closed doors. I'd love to see some real-life stories from people who've been affected by Trump's policies, that would be really interesting 📚.

omg I'm literally SO down for this doco 🤩🎥 I mean, it's like Chicago is my city and I've seen the stuff they're talkin about go down, especially with all the raids and detentions that happened during Trumps presidency 😩. It's gonna be so cool to see it all on screen and get a better understanding of what it's really like for the ppl who are impacted by these policies 🤝.

And I love how they're focusin on characterization and storytelling, like, we need more of those kinds of docos that show the human side of things, ya know? 📚💡. I'm already gettin hyped for the screenings and the discussions with local politicians and advocates 🎟️👥. We need more conversations about this stuff! 💬

OMG yaaas 🤩 I'm so hyped about this docu "Shouldering Sanctuary"!!! It's like finally someone is gonna give a voice to the ppl who are affected by Trump's immigration policies 💖 I mean, we need more of these kinds of films that show the human side of things, not just the politics 😔 Cliff Questel's drawings are genius 🎨 can't wait to see them on screen! Also, I love how they're making it accessible online and even offering free tickets 🎟️ let's get the word out and support this film! 🌟

Ugh, I'm so glad they're making a documentary about this 🙄... I mean, Chicago is just so lucky to have such a unique immigration situation, right? But seriously, it's crazy that we even need a doc to humanize the city's response to Trump's policies. Like, can't people already get a feel for how messed up things are when they watch news or something? 🤦‍♂️ Anyway, I'm sure the filmmakers will do a great job of characterization and storytelling – those interviews with politicians and community members should give us some real insight into what's going on. And sketching courtroom scenes without cameras allowed is genius, lol... I mean, who needs footage when you have Cliff Questel's art 🎨? Let's just hope the doc gets it right and doesn't get lost in all the hype...

man i remember when chicago was a small city back in the 90s 🤔 no idea how they're gonna capture all this complexity on film, but i guess it's cool that they're trying to humanize the whole immigration thing 🌎 like we used to talk about politics on my uncle's old dial-up internet at home now its all about these fancy documentaries and online platforms 😂 still sounds like a big undertaking tho

just watched a sneak peek of this docu "Shouldering Sanctuary" about chicago's immigration landscape 🌆 it's really giving me feelings on how we're all in this together 💕 the way they're humanizing ppl affected by trump's policies is straight fire 🔥 i love that they're featuring local politicians & community members to share their stories, it's so necessary for us to hear from both sides of the aisle 🗣️ anyone else excited for the screenings? 😃

I'm so down for a documentary that's gonna show us what's really goin' on in Chicago when it comes to immigration, you feel? I think it's dope that they're focusin' on characterization and storytelling, 'cause let's be real, we gotta see the people behind the headlines. It's all about humanizin' the issue, right? And I love how they're includin' footage from social media and bodycam interviews - that's like, super relevant to our lives nowadays.

But what I'm really excited about is that it's not just a one-sided thing, you know? They're workin' with local politicians and advocates to share their perspectives, so we can get a more balanced view of the issue. And I love that they're highlightin' moments of community and resilience - that's like, totally what we need right now.

I'm also thinkin', how cool is it that Cliff Questel is sketchin' courtroom scenes? That's like, so not everythin' you see in the news, but that's exactly what we need more of. I'm definitely gonna check out this documentary when it drops - and I hope they gettin' some good feedback from the community! 🤞

I just got back from the most amazing weekend getaway to Wisconsin Dells 🏞️ and I'm still thinking about the cherry pie they have there... it's like a whole different world! Anyway, what caught my attention about this documentary is how they're trying to humanize the immigration landscape by focusing on characterization and storytelling. It's like, we don't always see the impact of these policies on regular people, right? 🤔 I wish more documentaries would do that. Have you ever been to Wisconsin Dells? The views are just stunning!

I think it's a total waste of time making a documentary about this stuff, I mean, what's the point? It's just gonna make Chicago sound like some kinda sanctuary city that's letting everyone in willy-nilly, when in reality, it's probably just a bunch of people trying to get around the system 🤷‍♂️. And don't even get me started on the protesters and politicians - they're all just trying to get attention for their own agendas, not actually making a difference 💸. I mean, if you want to humanize the issue, why not try showing some real footage of people actually benefiting from the policies? Like, how many successful business owners or entrepreneurs can we really say were affected by Trump's immigration orders? 🤑

🤗 I'm so down for this documentary! It's about time we see a more personal side of immigration in Chicago 🌆. The idea of using art to shed light on the inner workings of the court system is genius ✏️. I love that the filmmakers are focusing on characterization and storytelling – it's easy to get caught up in the headlines, but this doc will help us connect with people's real-life struggles 💕. And I appreciate them highlighting community resilience 🌟. Can't wait to see how this plays out at the Edge Theater!

🤔 I'm not sure what to make of this docu yet... it sounds like a good starting point to get people talking about the issue, but will it really change anything? 🚫💡 I mean, we've seen so many documentaries and films about immigration that haven't made a real difference in the end. It's gonna be interesting to see how this one shakes out. They're trying to humanize the issue by focusing on storytelling and characterization, which is cool, but will it be enough to sway public opinion? 🤷‍♀️ I'm still skeptical, but at the same time, it's great that they're tackling a tough topic in a way that's not too preachy or polarizing. Fingers crossed it'll be more than just a feel-good film 🎥👍

I'm so stoked to see a docu about Chicago's immigration scene finally hitting the screens 🎥🌆 The platform is all about giving voice to those who need it most, and this doc promises to do just that 💖 By humanizing the city's response to federal immigration enforcement, it's gonna give us all a better understanding of what's really going on behind closed doors 🔒 And let's be real, having Cliff Questel's sketches of courtroom scenes is just genius 🎨🔍 Can't wait to see how the filmmakers capture those moments of community and resilience – it's gonna make for some powerful storytelling 💪
