Insomniac's Next Move: Ratchet & Clank Returns with Multiplayer Game on Mobile
After four long years since the release of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, fans of the beloved action-platformer series are finally getting some good news. A new installment is on the horizon, and it's not coming to the PlayStation 5 as many had hoped.
Instead, Insomniac's latest project is a multiplayer arena shooter called Ratchet & Clank: Ranger Rumble, which is set to arrive on iOS and Android devices soon. The game has already gone live in select countries, with fans in other regions able to pre-register for the upcoming release.
Developed by mobile studio Oh BiBi, Ranger Rumble promises to deliver fast-paced action with a variety of colorful characters, abilities, and weapons at players' disposal. The game features several modes, including a soccer-style mode that's sure to bring out the competitive spirit in gamers.
While it's unclear when exactly Ranger Rumble will be released globally, fans can expect it to be free-to-play โ although, as with many mobile games of this type, microtransactions are likely on the horizon. One positive aspect is that players will have the opportunity to customize their characters.
This isn't the first time the Ratchet & Clank series has made its way to mobile devices, however. Insomniac's Going Mobile debuted in 2005, before smartphones became a norm. An endless runner called Before the Nexus arrived eight years later, and dedicated fans have since found ways to play older titles like Clone Home โ an original sequel to Going Mobile that was originally intended for Java phones but was canceled.
With Ranger Rumble on the way, it seems Insomniac is committed to bringing its beloved franchise to new audiences. Whether this will be a success remains to be seen, but one thing's for certain: fans of action-platformers have reason to be excited once again.
