A Thousand Blows season two review – Erin Doherty is so good it's hard to think about anything else

Erin Doherty's presence is often enough to make A Thousand Blows, Steven Knight's late-Victorian thriller, feel like a triumph, even when its premise and plot are somewhat marred. But in the show's second season, Doherty's magnetic turn as Mary Carr, a tough-as-boots pickpocketing queen with an undeniable presence, elevates the programme to new heights.

The problem with A Thousand Blows' first outing was that it seemed to struggle with its own weight. While Erin Doherty shone in her breakout role as Princess Anne in The Crown, she brought a certain je ne sais quoi to Mary's character that made it hard to separate fact from fiction. But with the second season, series creator Steven Knight has managed to craft a more cohesive narrative that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats.

This time around, the show tackles darker themes and grapples with issues like colonialism, racism, tradition, and class, all set against the gritty backdrop of London's East End. Mary and her mischievous colleagues form an unholy trinity of female empowerment, poverty, and risk – but even their exploits feel increasingly bleak as the series progresses.

Erin Doherty is still at the heart of it all, her character forming a central axis around which the story revolves. She's got a way of selling the idea that she is Mary Carr, and it's both captivating and unsettling to watch. But while Doherty shines, the supporting cast struggles to keep up.

Stephen Graham, as Sugar, feels particularly lost in the shuffle. His character's downward spiral from boxer to down-and-out is heartbreaking – but it also makes him feel like a cipher, someone whose motivations are impossible to discern. And Hezekiah Moscow, played by Malachi Kirby, fares no better, his journey from boxing prodigy to disillusioned has-been feeling more like a narrative detour than a compelling arc.

Despite the show's many missteps, Erin Doherty is still the anchor that holds A Thousand Blows together. She brings a depth and nuance to Mary's character that makes her feel like a fully fleshed-out person – but even she can't elevate this muddled second outing to new heights.

The real question is whether audiences will forgive the show's shortcomings in light of Doherty's undeniable talent. Can A Thousand Blows become more than just Erin Doherty's vehicle, or will it forever be haunted by its own self-doubt?

🤔 The second season's narrative is like a perfectly crafted lockpick - intricate and frustrating at the same time. While Erin Doherty shines brighter than ever as Mary Carr, the supporting cast feels like they're stuck in the shadows. 🕵️‍♀️ Stephen Graham and Hezekiah Moscow need to bring more depth to their characters if A Thousand Blows wants to elevate beyond being a one-woman show 🎭

I don’t usually comment but... I think this season of A Thousand Blows is a major step up from the first one 🤔. Erin Doherty is still the standout, no question, and she has that magic that makes you believe in her character even when things get murky. But for me, the real problem with this show isn’t just its inconsistent supporting cast – it’s how it handles these heavy themes like colonialism and racism. It feels like Steven Knight is trying to tackle too much at once and isn’t quite sure how to wrap everything up nicely 😕. Still, Doherty's performance keeps you hooked, even if the rest of the show doesn't quite live up to her level 📺.

I'm so stoked to see Erin Doherty killing it as Mary Carr again 💥👏! The stats are clear: her performance has a 93% approval rating on IMDB, and the show's viewership has increased by 35% compared to season one 📈👀. Meanwhile, the show's Rotten Tomatoes score is at 72%, which is still solid, but not as high as I'd like 😐. On a more interesting note, have you seen the correlation between A Thousand Blows' plot twists and audience engagement? 🤔 It looks like viewers are most hooked when the show's tackling darker themes, like colonialism and class. Here's a rough breakdown:

* Colonialism: 62% of viewers report feeling emotionally invested in this aspect
* Class: 58%
* Tradition: 50%
* Poverty: 42%

I'd love to see more data on how these themes are affecting the show's overall impact 📊

I gotta say, I'm loving this season of A Thousand Blows so far 🤩! Erin Doherty is absolutely killing it as Mary Carr, she's got that whole "pickpocketing queen" thing down pat 😎. But, for real though, the show's getting a bit too heavy-handed with all these dark themes and social commentary. I mean, colonialism, racism, class... it's like they're trying to tackle everything at once 🤯. And don't even get me started on the supporting cast, some of them just feel like cardboard cutouts 💔. But, Doherty's presence is still what keeps you hooked, she's got that magic ✨. Can they really elevate this show beyond just being Erin's personal project? We'll see 🤔.

🤔 "You can't go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending." The real question is whether audiences will forgive A Thousand Blows' shortcomings and give Steven Knight a new beginning... 🎬

I'm low-key skeptical about the hype around Erin Doherty's performance in A Thousand Blows 2 🤔. Don't get me wrong, she's got charisma for days, but I think her presence is being overstated. The show's narrative feels disjointed and tries to cram too many themes into one season. I mean, colonialism, racism, tradition, class – it's a lot to tackle in 10 episodes. And don't even get me started on the supporting cast 🙄. Stephen Graham's character is basically a prop with no real agency, and Hezekiah Moscow's storyline feels like a non-sequitur.

I'm also kinda tired of the "tough-as-boots" trope 💁‍♀️. Mary Carr sounds like a classic stereotype, and I wish the show would subvert that expectation instead of relying on it. Plus, if Erin Doherty is carrying the show single-handedly, what happens when she's not around? Does the show just fizzle out? 🤷

I'm low-key disappointed 🤕 that they're not doing enough to flesh out the rest of the cast. Stephen Graham's character was such a strong potential thread, but he gets lost in the shuffle. It's like the writers thought Erin Doherty was gonna carry the whole show by herself and that everyone else was just filler 💁‍♀️. And don't even get me started on how they're handling those darker themes - it feels like they're trying too hard to be edgy instead of actually saying something meaningful 🤔. Still, Erin Doherty's got some serious range, so I'm hoping she'll carry this show to the finish line 💪

OMG I know wot u mean about Erin Doherty being the main reason why A Thousand Blows works 🤯 She's literally the best part of this show and I'm so here for her character Mary Carr, she's like a female version of Elizabeth Bennet from Pride & Prejudice but with a punk rock twist 💁‍♀️. The supporting cast just can't compete wot her talent level, Stephen Graham's Sugar feels like a wasted opportunity 🤕. I do think the show tries 2 tackle some heavy themes like colonialism and racism but it just falls flat 🚫. Can we please just have more of Erin Doherty in our lives? 😍

i'm not feeling this season of a thousand blows 🤔. erin doherty is still the highlight, but even she can't save the show from itself. the writing's all over the place and the supporting cast is straight out of a bad thriller movie 🎥. sugar's character feels like a waste of stephen graham's talent and hezekiah moscow's storyline is just a confusing mess 🤯. i'm not sure if audiences will keep watching despite doherty's magic, but for me, it's already too much to handle 😒.

I'm all about visual storytelling 🤔. If I were to diagram out the pros and cons of this season of A Thousand Blows, I'd draw a big ol' graph with Erin Doherty at the center 🔥.

On one axis, we've got her amazing performance as Mary Carr 🎭. She's like a rockstar, bringing energy and charisma to every scene she's in. On the other axis, we've got the supporting cast, who feel a bit...lost 🤦‍♂️.

Now, if I were to add some more context, I'd draw a big ol' X through the plot holes 😒. It feels like the show is trying to tackle too many themes at once, and it gets a bit confusing in the middle.

But hey, Erin Doherty's got this 🔥. She's like a superhero cape for the entire show. So even though there are some missteps, she can still elevate A Thousand Blows to new heights 🚀.

It's just a matter of whether the rest of the cast can keep up 😅. Can they find their own superhero cape, or will they be stuck in the shadows? Only time (and more episodes) will tell 🕰️!

I'm totally obsessed with Erin Doherty's performance as Mary Carr in A Thousand Blows 😍! She brings this incredible energy to the role that makes you feel like you're right there on the streets of London's East End, getting into all sorts of trouble with her and her crew 🤑. The problem is, the rest of the cast just can't keep up, if you ask me 🤷‍♀️. Stephen Graham as Sugar feels really lost in the shuffle, and Hezekiah Moscow's character arc just kinda falls flat ⚰️.

I think what's most impressive about Doherty's performance is how she makes Mary feel like a fully fleshed-out person, even when her character has some pretty rough edges 😳. She's got this way of selling the idea that she's not just a tough pickpocket, but also someone with depth and vulnerability 🤗. And let's be real, it's hard to deny that she's the anchor that holds this show together 💪.

The thing is, though, the rest of the show still feels kinda muddled 🤯. The writers seem to be trying to tackle some really big themes - colonialism, racism, class struggle... and while it's admirable to try to tackle these complex issues, I'm not entirely sure they're always executed well 💔. It's like the show is trying too hard to make a point, rather than just letting the story breathe 🤯.

So yeah, Erin Doherty is still my main reason for watching A Thousand Blows 🎉! She's got this incredible talent that makes you feel invested in her character, even when the rest of the show isn't quite there yet 😊. Can it become more than just her vehicle, though? That's the real question 🤔!

I'm so stoked to see how far A Thousand Blows has come! 🤩 I mean, Erin Doherty is just on fire as Mary Carr and she's totally elevating the show. The way she brings depth and nuance to her character is incredible. And even though the supporting cast can be a bit meh, Doherty's charisma pulls them through. 😊 The way the show tackles darker themes like colonialism and racism is so important - it's not always easy to make these topics compelling, but A Thousand Blows is doing its best. I'm curious to see how it all comes together this season! 💡

🤔 I'm loving how Mary Carr is starting to feel like a fully fleshed-out character, but the supporting cast is still kinda meh. 🙄 The show's getting darker and more complex, which is cool, but it also feels like they're trying too hard to tackle all these heavy themes at once. 🤯 I'm invested in Erin Doherty's performance, no doubt about it 👑, but the rest of the cast needs to step up their game. 💪

idk why they even bothered w/ season 2 lol 🤔 - erin doherty is the only one who can carry this show and even she's not enough to save it from itself . the writing is all over the place and steven knight needs to get his priorities straight. its like he's trying to cram too many themes into one episode and it ends up feeling like a mess 🤯 - at least the cinematography is still on point, but yeah that's about it

I'm kinda feeling meh about this season 2 of A Thousand Blows 🤔. Don't get me wrong, Erin Doherty is still giving us LIFE as Mary Carr, but the rest of the cast just can't keep up 😩. I mean, what's up with Stephen Graham's Sugar? He's got some amazing acting chops, but his character feels so... lost? 🤷‍♂️ And don't even get me started on the plot – it's like they're trying to cram too many themes into one show 📚.

But at the end of the day, Erin Doherty is still the glue that holds this show together 💪. She brings so much depth and nuance to Mary's character, and I love how she sells the idea that she's Mary Carr 👑. So yeah, even with its missteps, A Thousand Blows still has some serious potential 🔥. Can it live up to it? Only time will tell 🕰️

omg have you guys seen that new avenger movie 🤩 i was thinking about how the mcu has been doing a pretty good job of exploring different genres in their movies like iron man is more action-oriented and captain america is more serious and thor is just... well, Thor is just fun 🤣 anyway, back to A thousand blows... i feel like erin doherty's character would be way cooler if she had some cool gadgets or skills like a female jackie chan 💥 but maybe that's just me

I'm so over this season of A Thousand Blows 🙄. Don't get me wrong, Erin Doherty is still a total rockstar as Mary Carr 😍, but the rest of the cast just can't keep up. Stephen Graham's character feels like a cardboard cutout, and I'm still trying to figure out what Hezekiah Moscow's deal is 🤔. The show tries to tackle some heavy themes, but it comes off feeling like a jumbled mess. And can we please get over the fact that Erin Doherty is basically the only reason this show exists? 😂 It's like she's carrying the whole thing on her shoulders... and honestly, I'm not mad at her for shining so bright 💫

🤔 I gotta say, Erin Doherty is straight fire as Mary Carr 🚀 she brings this crazy energy to the show that makes you wanna watch more. But for me, A Thousand Blows still feels like a mess 🔩 the plot's all over the place and some of the supporting characters feel like cardboard cutouts 😐

Here's a little diagram to help illustrate my point:
```
+-----------------------+
A Thousand
Blows:
Erin Doherty shines
but show's got
some serious plot
holes and character
development issues
+-----------------------+
```
The good news is that the second season tries to tackle some heavier themes, like colonialism and class 🌎👥. But sometimes it feels like these topics get lost in the shuffle 💔

Here's a tiny ASCII art representation of Mary Carr:

So, will audiences forgive A Thousand Blows' flaws? I hope so 🤞 'cause Erin Doherty is definitely worth watching! 👀
