Activists Are Using ‘Fortnite’ to Fight Back Against ICE

Activists are using popular online games like Fortnite and Grand Theft Auto to prepare gamers for real-life encounters with ICE agents. The goal is to educate players about their rights when dealing with immigration authorities.

In a move that echoes the US military's efforts to use gaming as a recruitment tool, the Department of Homeland Security has been posting images and videos on social media platforms like Instagram and Twitter that reference popular games. For example, they posted an image from Halo 3, alongside a tweet that read "Finishing this fight." This move is seen by some as a way for ICE to reach an audience that may be more receptive to their message.

However, activists are pushing back against this approach. A group called New Save Collective has been organizing gaming events and streams to raise awareness about immigration rights and combat xenophobia online. Their goal is to create a community that is kind, authentic, and focused on doing good.

The group's founders have backgrounds in activism and organizing, and they plan to continue holding future events and organizing gamers. They believe that games like Fortnite and Grand Theft Auto offer a unique platform for their message to reach a wide audience.

In order to play through the scavenger hunt event planned for Fortnite, players must first be onboarded to the server. Organizers have already dealt with people claiming to be ICE agents spreading misinformation and pro-ICE propaganda in their online communities.

The group is working with other organizations, including Define American, which focuses on shifting the portrayal of immigrants in media. Shauna Siggelkow, vice president of programs for Define American, says that the focus on games is part of a broader effort to change the public discourse around immigration.

"We want to make sure that our message is showing up in those same places—maybe you are not an immigrant, but someone in your life, in your community definitely is," she said.

I'm low-key worried about this, you know? 🤔 Like, I get the intention behind it - to educate people and all that - but at what cost? 🤑 I mean, we're already seeing a lot of misinformation spread around online gaming communities. Now they're using gaming as a way to "recruit" people? It's like, what's next? 🚨

I think it's cool that the New Save Collective is trying to counter this with their own events and streams. I mean, who doesn't love a good gaming session for a good cause? 🎮 But we need to be careful not to just swap one info overload for another. Can we really trust ICE to spread accurate info? 🤷‍♀️

I think it's also interesting that they're trying to change the public discourse around immigration through games. It's like, why not try to change people's minds through gaming instead of, you know, actual policy changes or education programs? 🤔

omg I'm so down with this New Save Collective idea 🤩! they're using games like Fortnite and GTA to spread awareness about immigration rights & combatting xenophobia online 🌎💻 it's a genius way to reach people who might not be as open to traditional activist methods. I mean, who doesn't love gaming? 😂 and the scavenger hunt event in Fortnite sounds like so much fun! I'm definitely signing up for that 🎮👍. I think this is a great example of how gaming can be used for good 🤝. The Department of Homeland Security's move to use games as a recruitment tool is kinda weird though... does anyone really want to join ICE? 😒 anyway, I'll be keeping an eye on New Save Collective and their events! 📺👏

I'm like "red flag" 🚨 here - what's next? Using Pokémon Go to educate people about border control? It feels like a slippery slope to me 😬. I get where the activists are coming from, but can't we have a more nuanced conversation about immigration without resorting to gaming and social media memes? 🤔 Let's focus on building bridges, not creating virtual ones. And what's up with ICE using gaming references on their own platforms? It just feels like they're trying too hard to be cool 👀. Give me a break!

🤔 So I think its pretty cool that activists r using games like Fortnite & Grand Theft Auto 2 educate ppl about their rights when dealing w/ immigration authorities 🚨💻 It makes sense 2 me 2 use platforms where ppl already spend time online 📱

But at the same time, I'm kinda worried abt how ICE is tryna reach out 2 gamers using games like Halo 3 🤖👊 Its not a good look 4 them & might just make ppl more scared or defensive 💔

Meanwhile, I love what the New Save Collective is doin 🎉💖 They're creating a community that's all about positivity, kindness & respect online 🌈💕 It's so important 2 promote those values, especially when it comes 2 issues like immigration 🌍💖

this is so weird they're trying to use gaming to catch people in real life 🤯 like what's next? using minecraft to identify potential terrorists or something 🚫 i get that immigration can be super complicated and scary but using games as a recruitment tool just feels really exploitative 💸 and how are they gonna stop all these fake ice agents from messing up the event 🤪 gotta give it to new save collective for organizing some sick gaming events tho 🎮👏

😕 so what's with ice posting gaming pics and vids on instagram? like r they trying 2 reach gamers w/ their immigration msg or wut? 🤔 think its a weird move tbh 😅 dont think games like fortnite r the best platform 4 this kinda thing... i mean, its not exactly like u can jus relate 2 some dude in a halo uniform when ur dealing w/ immigration authorities 🙄

I dont think its cool that DHS is tryna use games 2 reach people about ICE...its like they wanna create this narrative whr gamers rnt just gamers but also agents of the state lol 🤣 anyway, I think its awesome dat New Save Collective is countering dis approach by creatin a community thats all about positivity & inclusivity. They should keep organizin those gaming events & streams 2 spread awareness bout immigration rights 👍

omg i just saw this thread and its so crazy lol i mean i get the idea of using gaming to educate ppl about immigration rights but i think ice should just stick to making vids on youtube like everyone else 🤣 meanwhile im over here thinking we need more inclusive games that show diverse immigrant experiences in a positive light

man this whole thing is wild... 🤯 like on one hand, i get it, we need to educate people about their rights and stuff, but using games like fortnite to do it feels kinda...cynical? 😐 like are we just gonna dumb down the message to reach a wider audience or something?

and i'm lowkey concerned about what other orgs might be getting into this. like the gov's trying to use gaming as a recruitment tool, that's already sketchy enough. do we really want them infiltrating our online communities with their propaganda? 🚫

on the other hand, if it can reach people who might not otherwise care about immigration rights, then i guess it's worth exploring. but gotta make sure we're not just perpetuating more division and xenophobia instead of trying to bring people together 🤝

OMG, can u believe ICE is using Fortnite & GTA to recruit people? 🤯 like what's next? They're basically trying to use gaming as a way to "recruit" ppl, but I think it's kinda messed up. The New Save Collective group is doing the right thing by organizing gaming events and streams to educate players about immigration rights. We need more awareness about this stuff! 🚨

I'm actually planning to attend their Fortnite scavenger hunt event, and it sounds super cool 🎮💻. I think games like Fortnite can be a great platform for important conversations, especially if they're done in a responsible way. Define American's focus on shifting the portrayal of immigrants in media is so needed too! 💖

OMG I gotta say this is a super weird move by ICE 🤔👀 I mean I get what they're trying to do but using gaming as a way to recruit people? It's like, they think gamers are all like "oh yeah I'm down for some xenophobia" 😂 nope not everyone plays games to be racist or homophobic. And what's with the Halo 3 reference 🤷‍♂️ did they really think that was gonna resonate with people?

I do love the idea of using gaming events to raise awareness about immigration rights though 👏 it's a great way to get people talking about these issues in a more relaxed setting. I've seen some of those gaming events on Twitch and they're super chill 🤩 it's like, people are actually having fun while learning something new.

But at the same time I'm also kinda concerned that this is gonna be co-opted by pro-ICE folks online 😕 we need to make sure that our message isn't getting watered down or hijacked by people who don't care about actual social justice. We gotta keep fighting for our rights and making sure that ICE doesn't get away with their stuff 🚫👊

I'm kinda skeptical about this whole thing 🤔. Like, I get it, using games to educate people about immigration rights can be a cool way to reach a younger audience, but do we really need ICE agents lurking around online gaming communities spreading propaganda? 🚫 It just feels like a weird move. And what's next? Are they gonna post memes on TikTok with " Finish this fight" caption or something? 🤣

I'm low-key freaking out about this 🤯. I mean, who knew the gov was gonna get into gaming? They're basically trying to recruit people like they're in some sorta secret mission 💻. But what really got me is that ICE is using games to "reach" a certain audience... it's all so sketchy 😒. Can't they just have an honest convo about immigration rights instead of throwing around hashtags and pro-ICE propaganda? 🤷‍♂️ Meanwhile, the New Save Collective is trying to create a positive community in Fortnite (and other games) that promotes kindness, authenticity, and doing good ❤️. We need more of this! Let's focus on spreading positivity online 😊.

I don't know about this, it feels like we're living in some kind of sci-fi movie where the government is trying to use games to recruit people or something 🤖. Remember when Halo was first released and everyone just played it for fun? Now they're using it to spread their message... I'm not sure if it's effective or just weird 😕.

I mean, what's next? Are they going to create a game where you have to navigate through the asylum system? 🤯 This feels like something out of The Matrix. And don't even get me started on how people are claiming to be ICE agents online... that's just not cool, dude 🙅‍♂️.

I guess what I'm saying is, I'd rather see them focus on creating real-life opportunities for gamers to make a difference, you know? Like organizing actual events or something. That would be way more meaningful than playing games with a government agenda 🎮💻

I'm not totally convinced about this idea 😐... I mean, using games like Fortnite and Grand Theft Auto to educate people about immigration rights sounds kinda cool, I guess. But at the same time, I'm worried that it might be seen as a bit... insincere? Like, can we really trust the government to have our backs when it comes to these issues? 🤔

I think what's more important is having real-life experiences and connections with people who are going through this. It's not just about learning some facts and figures online. We need to see our communities coming together, sharing stories, and supporting each other in person 💕.

The fact that ICE is using games as a recruitment tool is kinda creepy, tbh 😳... like, what's next? Using Minecraft to brainwash kids into conforming to their ideology? 🤯 No thanks!

I do love the idea of Define American trying to shift the public discourse around immigration, though 💪. We need more conversations about empathy and understanding, not just fear-mongering and xenophobia. Let's focus on building bridges, not walls 🔩.

I gotta say, I'm kinda disappointed in how the gov's trying to use gaming as a way to reach people about immigration issues 🤔. Like, yeah, they can post some sick Halo 3 pics on Instagram, but is that really gonna make a difference?

On the other hand, I think it's awesome what these activists are doing with New Save Collective 🎮. They're taking games that everyone loves and using them to spread a message about kindness and acceptance. It's all about creating a community that's focused on doing good, you know?

I mean, Fortnite is already super popular among gamers, so if the gov uses it as a way to get their message out there, they might actually reach some people who wouldn't normally care about immigration issues 🤷‍♂️. And who knows, maybe this will start a convo that'll make people think differently about how they treat others.

For me, it's all about being open-minded and willing to listen to different perspectives 👂. We should be encouraging empathy and understanding, not just trying to force our views on others 🤝.
