After years spent documenting state terror, I know it when I see it. And I see it now in the US and Israel | Janine di Giovanni

State terror is not just about masked men and torture cells; it's about the deliberate erosion of democratic values and institutions. Janine di Giovanni has spent years documenting its presence in various parts of the world, from Syria to Egypt, Iraq, and Israel.

What she describes as a familiar pattern – governments using words like "security" and "order" to justify repressive policies – is a subtle yet devastating shift. Democratic states begin to adopt methods used by authoritarian regimes, often under the guise of combating terrorism or maintaining national security.

The tools are already in place: surveillance on university campuses, threats against pro-Palestinian activists, and the deployment of ICE agents to break up demonstrations. Journalists are disciplined for spreading "incorrect" information, while academics face pressure to toe the line. The media is filled with disinformation, and those who resist are labeled enemies of the state.

The true irony is that state terror does not make a state safer; it weakens democratic institutions and erodes global credibility. As di Giovanni notes, the most chilling thing is what happens to society – fear becomes internalized, and we begin to censor our own thoughts.

We should be listening to the testimonies of those who have lived through state terror. Their voices are an early warning signal that cannot be ignored. The Reckoning Project, founded by di Giovanni, aims to document war crimes and hold perpetrators accountable. Its work is crucial in exposing the ways in which democracies can slide into danger.

As we face this crisis, it's essential to recognize the signs of state terror – not just when they're explicit, but also when they're subtle and insidious. We must support those who speak out against repressive policies and hold our leaders accountable for their actions. The future of democracy depends on it.

man... this is like, super scary stuff 🤯 the way they slowly chip away at our freedoms and turn us into sheep who can't think for ourselves... i mean, what's next? are we gonna trade in our right to free speech for a nice comfy life of conformity?

it's all so familiar, you know? like, we're living in a dystopian novel or something 📚 and the bad guys are hiding behind fancy words like "security" and "order"... meanwhile they're just silencing dissenting voices and crushing anyone who dares to question their authority.

we need to wake up, fam... this is our democracy we're talking about 💪 not some weak imitation of it that's gonna fade away if we don't do something. the Reckoning Project is like, a beacon of hope or whatever... they're trying to hold the perpetrators accountable and shine a light on what's really going on.

i'm so tired of living in fear 😩 but i won't let that silence me either... we need to keep pushing forward, no matter how hard it gets. for our freedom, for our future...

OMG, this is soooo deep 🤯! Like, we need to be super aware of what's going on in our governments and like, take a stand when they're being all sneaky about it 🚨. I mean, who wants their freedom of speech or expression taken away? Not me, that's for sure 😒. We gotta listen to those who have been affected by state terror, 'cause they know what they're talking about 💯. And like, let's support the Reckoning Project and all the other orgs doing important work 🎉. It's not just about democracy, it's about our humanity, you feel? 🤝

man 😒 this whole thing gives me chills... i mean, we've seen some dark times in history, but the way they're sneaking these authoritarian tactics into democratic societies is just wild 🤯 like, what's next? are we gonna see them start censoring our favorite shows or something? 📺 and don't even get me started on the surveillance state... it's like, we're already living in some kind of dystopian novel 😂 but seriously though, the Reckoning Project is doing some amazing work and we need more people to speak out against these repressive policies 💪

🤔 you know what's wild? how we can get so comfortable with the idea of "security" being used as an excuse to curtail our freedom? it's like, what even is security anymore? isn't it supposed to be about protecting us from real threats, not just manipulating us into giving up our rights? 🤷‍♀️ anyway, i think it's so important that we're having these kinds of conversations - it's like, the more we talk about it, the less room there is for "security" to become a euphemism for control. we have to keep pushing back against those who would use their power to silence us, even if it means speaking truth to power 💪

omg i was watching this documentary about syria last night and it's so crazy how these governments are using "security" as an excuse to do all this stuff 🤯 what's even weirder is that ppl seem to be okay with it idk maybe im just not aware of the whole situation but like shouldn't we be speaking out against it more? 😕 also can someone explain to me what disinformation is? is it like when ppl share fake news on social media? 🤔

🤔 this is super worrying what's happening with all these democratic states sliding into authoritarian regimes its like we're losing the very foundation of our freedoms if we dont pay attention to the signs and support those who speak out against these policies we might be facing a global crisis where our voices get silenced and our thoughts are censored 🤷‍♀️

🤐 think we're already seeing this in how some schools are introducing "character education" that really just sounds like an excuse to silence dissenting voices... what's next? 😒

omg u gotta wonder how deep weve fallen, its like democracies r just borrowin from the autocrats playbook lol 🤦‍♂️ "security" = excuse 4 eroding civil liberties anyone? i mean whats next? ICE agents at ur kid's school event? 😱 and disinfo spewed everywhere, its like our media is runnin on a loop of propaganda 💸 what we need is people like Janine di Giovanni who r speakin truth 2 power, but lets be real, havent we all been labelin ppl enemies of the state when they r just tryna have a diff opin? 🤷‍♀️

I JUST CAN'T BELIEVE HOW FAST WE'RE SLIDING INTO THIS THING!!! IT STARTS WITH SMALL THINGS LIKE SURVEILLANCE ON CAMPUS AND DISMISSING JOURNALISTS, BUT BEFORE YOU KNOW IT, THE GOVERNMENT IS USING ALL THESE EXCUSES TO JUSTIFY ACTUAL TERRORISM. AND DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON HOW WE'RE SUPPOSED TO KNOW WHEN THE GOVERNMENT IS BEHAVING BADLY - IS IT REALLY THAT HARD TO SEE WHEN THEY'RE TRYING TO SHUT DOWN DISCUSSIONS AND SUPPRESS FREE SPEECH? 🤯🚨 WE NEED MORE PEOPLE LIKE JANINE DI GIOVANNI SPREADING THE WORD ABOUT WHAT'S REALLY HAPPENING, NOT JUST IN SYRIA OR EGYPT BUT HERE TOO. WE SHOULD BE LISTENING TO THE VICTIMS OF STATE TERROR AND HOLDING OUR LEADERS ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR ACTIONS - ANYTHING LESS IS JUST A BUNCH OF HOOEY! 💔👊

🤯 I'm getting really worried about what's happening in the world right now 🌎. It feels like we're losing the values that make us human ❤️. These governments are using fancy words to hide their true intentions and it's so not cool 😒. They're basically silencing people who don't agree with them, including journalists and activists 👊.

I think it's super important for us to listen to the stories of those who have been through state terror 💬. It's not just about what they've experienced but also how it's changed their lives 🤯. We need to amplify their voices and hold our leaders accountable for their actions 👮‍♂️.

It's crazy that we're already seeing signs of this happening in democratic states 🤦‍♀️. If we don't speak out, who will? 💁‍♀️ We need to support those who are fighting against repressive policies and stand up for what's right 🔥. Democracy is worth fighting for 💪.

The Reckoning Project is doing amazing work 🙌, and I'm so glad it exists 😊. We need more people like Janine di Giovanni who are willing to speak truth to power 💁‍♀️. Let's keep an eye on this and make sure our leaders don't get away with it 🚫!

🤯 can we talk about how fast our democracies are being eroded? like, i'm reading this article and it's giving me major anxiety... state terror isn't just about the obvious stuff, it's about how governments use "security" as a excuse to silence dissenting voices. 🗣️ i mean, what even is going on with all these surveillance programs and threats against activists? 💼 it's like they're trying to create this culture of fear where people are too scared to speak out. 🤫 and the worst part is, it's not just about individual freedoms, it's about our global credibility too... we can't keep letting this happen! 😩

🚨 I'm really concerned about what's going on with state terror right now 🤕. It's not just about the masked men and torture cells, but about how governments are slowly eroding our democratic values and institutions. They're using words like "security" to justify repressive policies, which is so subtle yet super devastating 😳. I mean, who doesn't know that surveillance on university campuses and threats against activists isn't a good thing? 🤔

I think it's essential we listen to the testimonies of those who have lived through state terror 👂. Their voices are like a warning bell that can't be ignored 🔊. We need to support people who speak out against repressive policies and hold our leaders accountable for their actions 💪.

It's also super important to recognize the signs of state terror, even when they're not explicit 🕵️‍♀️. We need to be aware of what's happening in our own countries and around the world. The Reckoning Project is doing amazing work documenting war crimes and holding perpetrators accountable 🙏.

Let's make sure we're paying attention to this crisis and taking action to protect democracy 💥!

Ugh I'm literally so scared right now 🤯 I was in Egypt last year and I saw some stuff that's just... I don't know how to even process it. These government agents were monitoring everyone's social media and online activity, it was like they were watching your every move 24/7. And the worst part is, you can't even tell who's a journalist and who's not, because everyone's being silenced 🤐

I've been reading this one article about the Reckoning Project and I'm so inspired by Janine di Giovanni's work 💪 She's literally dedicating her life to exposing these human rights abuses. And you know what's crazy? The government is always like "we're doing it for security" but really we're just trying to control people's thoughts 🤔

I think we need to be way more vocal about this stuff, you know? We can't just sit back and let our leaders do whatever they want. We have to hold them accountable for their actions 💯
