Arsenal: Arsenal set pieces punish Portsmouth in FA Cup third round - Match of the Day

Arsenal's dominance at set pieces ultimately proved too much for Portsmouth in the FA Cup third round, as Mikel Arteta's side secured a comfortable 4-1 victory.

The Gunners' advantage was clear from the start, with Bukayo Saka scoring inside the first minute to give Arsenal an early lead. The home team continued to press, and they were rewarded with another goal just before halftime when Gabriel Martinelli doubled their advantage.

Despite Portsmouth's best efforts, it was not until after the interval that their second goal was scored, courtesy of a Saka penalty in the 48th minute. Just five minutes later, another Saka goal sealed the win for Arsenal and effectively ended the game.

In total, three different players were responsible for scoring three of the four goals, with Saka's hat-trick proving to be too much for Portsmouth's defense to handle. The victory marked a significant progression in the FA Cup competition for the Gunners as they now move on to face their next opponents in the fourth round.

In contrast, Portsmouth struggled to create any real scoring opportunities throughout the match, and were ultimately left with nothing but consolation from the late goal of the visiting team.

I'm loving how Arsenal's set piece dominance is finally paying off! 🤩 Those guys are like a well-oiled machine when it comes to delivering quality balls into the box 💥. And let's be real, Saka is just on fire right now 🔥 three goals in one match? insane! 😲 Gabriel Martinelli also getting in on the action 👏, nice to see him chipping in with some crucial strikes 🎯. Can't wait to see what Mikel Arteta's team does next ⚽

I mean, can't believe how much Arsenal relied on set pieces to take down Portsmouth... 🤔 it's just not that exciting a game, you know? I'd rather watch paint dry than sit through a whole match of teams kicking around the ball all day. And don't even get me started on Bukayo Saka's goal fest - three goals in like 10 minutes? 🙄 that's just ridiculous. What was Portsmouth even doing out there? They looked completely lost... and their defense is probably one of the worst in the league now 😒

I gotta say, Arsenal's dominance at set pieces is just insane 🤯! I mean, Saka's goal in the 1st minute already gave them a huge lead, and then they just kept racking up those corners and free kicks. Their ability to win the ball back quickly and launch swift counterattacks was just too much for Portsmouth to handle.

It's not like Arsenal were outclassing Portsmouth 4-0 or anything, but their efficiency at set pieces really sealed the deal 💪. And let's be real, Saka's hat-trick is just incredible - the kid's got some serious skills! 🤩

But what really caught my eye was how inconsistent Portsmouth were throughout the match ⏱️. They had some good moments of possession and created a few half-chances, but they just couldn't seem to finish them off. It was like they were stuck in neutral, waiting for something to happen 🔥.

Anyway, it's all clear now - Arsenal are on a roll, and Portsmouth are going to have to step up their game if they wanna compete with the big boys 🤞. Can't wait to see what happens next in the FA Cup!

omg what a thrashing 😂 arsenal's set piece dominance was insane 🤯 i mean bukayo saka is literally unstoppable right now ⚡️ 4-1 is a huge win for them and that second half was just Portsmouth having a tough time trying to get anything going 🤦‍♂️ arsene Wenger would be proud of the team's progression in the fa cup 👏

omg u gotta feel 4 arsenal lol they've been workin hard 2 get 2 da next round & it paid off so much! i was watchin dat game live n i was like "yessss saka is on fire!!" 💥🔥 mikel arteta's tactics r genius & arsenal's defense is lookin super solid too 🤩 did u see that tackle from gabriel martinelli? 😲 i swear he's da best player 4 arsenal rn

Lol @ how one guy can single handedly take down an opponent like that 🤣 Bukayo Saka is on fire rn! Like what's going through his head out there? 🤷‍♂️ 3 goals in one match and he's making it look effortless 🎯. The Gunners' set piece game is looking super strong this season, gotta give credit to the coaching staff for getting them to gel so quickly 🔥. And poor Portsmouth, just can't catch a break 😔. Guess they'll have to regroup and come back stronger next time 💪.

omg, #GoOnions 🦇! just watched this epic FA Cup match between Arsenal & Portsmouth and I'm still reeling from it 🤯 Mikel Arteta's squad was on FIRE 🔥, especially that Bukayo Saka dude - hat-trick alert! 🎉 His pace & skill on the field are unmatched 💨. The way they dominated set pieces was too much for Portsmouth to handle ⚽️. Can't wait for the 4th round match-up 🤔, but for now, let's give a huge shoutout to the #Gooners! 💛

I don't get why teams still use traditional tactics at set pieces 🤔. It's like they're not trying to outsmart their opponents or anything. Arsenal just parked the bus and waited for Portsmouth to gift them the goals... it's so frustrating! 😒 I mean, we all know that free kicks and corners can be a nightmare for opposing teams, but is it really that hard to mix things up? Maybe a bit more creativity in set piece defending would make life easier for defenders everywhere 🤦‍♂️.
