Artes Mundi 11 review – smug, stagey, up-itself nonsense for art world wazzocks

The latest edition of the prestigious Artes Mundi art prize has been met with widespread criticism from the art community. The shortlisted artists, touted as six of the world's most important international contemporary artists, have been panned for their lackluster displays that prioritize style over substance.

Visitors to the National Museum Cardiff exhibition are presented with mini-displays stuffed into a single long room, only accessible if one is willing to venture to other galleries across Wales. The problem lies in the assumption that this audience consists of experts and collectors who would appreciate the artists' work without being spoon-fed emotional or intellectual connections.

One of the standout pieces by Kameelah Janan Rasheed features a stuttering display of broken sentences, repeated phrases, and punctuation marks, serving as a commentary on communication difficulties. Her art is intentionally challenging, yet inaccessible to all but the most initiated viewers.

In contrast, Jumana Emil Abboud's solo showing at Mostyn boasts an assemblage of hackneyed tropes, from mysticism to deliberately awful paintings, that feel staged and false. The use of mysterious objects with fey inscriptions serves only to reinforce a sense of pretentiousness.

The exhibition's dispersal across Wales seems designed to prove a point: the curators have become so detached from the mainstream audience that they've lost sight of what truly matters in art. By scattering their prized artists' work across multiple venues, they're daring viewers to question the validity of Artes Mundi 11's selections.

Ultimately, the lackluster displays and smugness on display make for an underwhelming experience that fails to inspire or provoke meaningful conversation about contemporary art. One can't help but wonder if the Artes Mundi curatorial team has lost touch with what truly matters – fostering a connection between artists, viewers, and the world around them.

omg i'm so done w/ this year's @tesmundi exhibition 🤦‍♀️🎨 its like they took all the 'art' and turned it into some sorta pretentious, exclusive club 4 those who are 'in the know'. newsflash: just cuz u got a fancy degree or a fat bank account dont make u an expert lol. the way they scattered the pieces across wales is straight up confusing and i cant even... 🗺️ who r these ppl? Jumana Emil Abboud's show was literally the most cringeworthy thing i've ever seen, all those 'mystical' symbols just feel like she's tryin 2 be deep but really shes just a poser 🙄 kameelah janan rasheed is probs the only one doin it right w/ that stuttering display tho, at least thats some real talk 💯

OMG 🤔 like i went thru this exhibition at National Museum Cardiff and im honestly soooo underwhelmed 😒 the arting is all about style over substance, you feel? they got these 6 super famous artists shortlisted but like most of their work is just, idk, meh 💁‍♀️. i mean kameelah janan rasheed's art is cool and all but it's like, super hard to get into if u not familiar with her vibes 🤷‍♀️. meanwhile jumana Emil Abboud's stuff is just lol wut? 🙄 the whole mystical thing is so played out 🌟. i think the curators got a little too full of themselves 👑 and now they're all like "hey, come see us in wales!" 🤣 but honestly, it's just not that impressive 🤦‍♀️. they should've kept their prized artists' work in one place so ppl could just chill and get it 😎

I'm pretty disappointed in this year's Artes Mundi art prize winners 🤔... I mean have you seen the visitor stats for National Museum Cardiff? They're way down compared to last year 📉. And it's not just that - the exhibition itself is really fragmented, like they're trying to test our patience instead of engaging us 💁‍♀️.

I did some research on Kameelah Janan Rasheed's art, and apparently her stuttering display is actually a commentary on how often people with disabilities are miscommunicated with 🤝. But when I looked at the visitor reviews, most folks just thought it was confusing 😐. Meanwhile, Jumana Emil Abboud's artwork feels super manufactured, like something out of an art school project 📊.

I'm also wondering why they chose to scatter their winners across Wales instead of having a central hub. Did they really think people would want to travel around the country just to see this exhibit? 🚶‍♀️ The whole thing just feels kinda elitist, like they're talking down to the audience rather than with them 💬.

According to my sources, Artes Mundi has seen a decline in viewership over the past few years:

* 2022: 150,000 visitors
* 2023: 120,000 visitors
* 2024: 80,000 visitors (so far) 📊

And it's not just that - their online engagement metrics are also down:

* Instagram followers: -20% from last year 👀
* Twitter mentions: -30% from last year 💬
* YouTube views: -40% from last year 📹

Looks like the art world needs to get its priorities straight...

🤔 5/10 rating for this year's Artes Mundi art prize. I mean think about it... they chose 6 of the worlds most important international contemporary artists but somehow still managed to make it feel like an afterthought 🙄. And let me tell you, those mini-displays in National Museum Cardiff are straight up confusing 🤯. 60% of visitors to art museums have reported feeling overwhelmed by interactive exhibits... just saying 👀.

Charting the average visitor's experience at these types of exhibitions shows a clear trend: people want to be able to engage with the art on their own terms, not have to search for hidden meaning in some obscure corner of the museum 🌐.

And what's up with this whole Wales thing? The Artes Mundi team really wants you to feel like an expert to truly appreciate these pieces... but 80% of respondents to a recent survey said they'd rather just enjoy the art without having to Google everything first 📚.

The overall attendance for the exhibition was still decent at 3.7 million visitors, but when you factor in the amount of time people spent looking at each piece (average: 2 mins), it's clear something's off 💔.

I'm so done with exhibitions that prioritize style over substance... like, isn't the point of art to make you think or feel something? 🤯 This Artes Mundi thing is just confusing me, I mean who wants to go to 5 different galleries in Wales to see some artworks? 🤔 It's like they're trying to test how much of an effort viewers are willing to put in. And don't even get me started on the artists' styles... some of it feels soooo pretentious 😒. Can we just have a decent exhibit where everything flows and makes sense? 💭

I'm SO UNDERWHELMED BY THIS ENTIRE THING!!! 🤦‍♀️🎨 THE CURATORS NEED TO RECONSIDER HOW THEY'RE DISPLAYING THESE ARTISTS' WORKS. I MEAN, COME ON, WHO DOESN'T WANT TO SEE MORE OF THESE STUNNING PIECES IN ONE PLACE?! 😩 IT FEELS LIKE A CHALLENGE TO ME TO EVEN TRY AND APPRECIATE THE ART, RATHER THAN ENJOYING IT FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH. AND DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THOSE TROPPES! 🤣 JUMANA EMIL ABBOUD'S WORK SEEMS SO OVER-THE-TOP AND LACKS DEPTH. I FEEL LIKE THEY'RE TRYING TOO HARD TO BE PROFOUND BUT COME ACROSS AS PRETENTIOUS INSTEAD. 🙄

<3 I gotta say, I'm super disappointed in this year's Artes Mundi 11 exhibition 🤔. As an art enthusiast, I value substance over style, but it seems like the curators prioritized one over the other 💁‍♀️. Kameelah Janan Rasheed's piece is mind-blowing, but only if you're familiar with stuttering and communication difficulties 📝. It feels like a niche experience that not everyone can relate to.

And Jumana Emil Abboud's solo show? More like a lazy attempt at mysticism 🤪. It's like they took every "arty" trope and mashed them together into a pretentious mess 🎨. I get it, some art is meant to be thought-provoking, but this exhibition just feels... meh 🙄.

I think the real problem here is that Artes Mundi 11 has become too detached from the mainstream audience 🌐. They're so focused on showcasing "important" artists that they forgot about creating an engaging experience for everyone 🔍. It's like, can't we just have a conversation about art without feeling smug or pretentious? 💬

Here's a simple mind map to illustrate my point:
```
ART
|
|-- MAINSTREAM AUDIENCE
| |
| |-- ENGAGING EXPERIENCE
| |
| |-- CONVERSATION
|
|-- CURATORS
|
|-- PRIORITY STYLE OVER SUBSTANCE
|
|-- LACKLUSTER DISPLAYS
```
IDK, maybe I'm just being too harsh 😒. But seriously, art should be for everyone, not just the initiated 🌈.

🤔 The whole thing feels kinda... lazy? I mean, you'd think an exhibition of this caliber would push boundaries, spark some real conversations. Instead, it just seems like a bunch of high-profile artists getting together to show off their 'art' for the art's sake. 🎨 What happened to engaging with the masses and exploring what truly resonates with people?

🤔🎨 Art prize got me thinking - some displays are just too much 🙄. Artists should show their skills not just style 😐. Curators need to remember who they're showing for 👥 experts or collectors? 🤷‍♀️. Some art is meant to be thought-provoking, not just pretty pics 📸. When art loses connection with people it's a real shame 💔. Need more engagement and less pretentiousness 🙅‍♂️. Art should inspire and spark conversation, not boredom 😴👎

I'm totally disappointed in this year's Artes Mundi prize 🤕. I mean, these artists are supposed to be the best of the best, but honestly, it feels like they're more interested in showing off their skills than actually creating something that resonates with people.

The way they're showcasing Kameelah Janan Rasheed's work is just confusing - it's like they want to prove a point that her art is too deep for everyone else 🤓. But at the same time, Jumana Emil Abboud's stuff feels like it's trying too hard to be edgy and pretentious... it's just cringeworthy 🙄.

And can we talk about the fact that they're scattering their prized artists' work all over Wales? It's like they want people to struggle to find the exhibition, just so they can say "look, our curators are bold and innovative" 💡. Newsflash: it's not working 🎉. The whole thing feels like a big mess.

I think what's really needed here is some fresh eyes on the entire operation - someone who can come in and say "hey, let's focus on creating an experience that brings people together, rather than just showcasing individual artists' skills". Until then, I'm not impressed 🤷‍♀️.
