Planned Parenthood of Michigan Launches Vasectomy Services Amid Growing Demand
In a move to expand reproductive health care options, Planned Parenthood of Michigan has launched a vasectomy pilot program in Grand Rapids. The nonprofit organization will now offer the permanent birth control procedure in select locations throughout the state, with plans to scale up services in 2026.
The launch comes as demand for vasectomies surges nationwide. According to Planned Parenthood of Michigan, vasectomy rates have increased by nearly 60% among men under 30 and 13% among single men since 2022, following the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and eliminate federal protections for abortion.
The organization says its "no-scalpel" vasectomy technique is a safe and effective method of permanent birth control that offers fewer risks and a shorter recovery time compared to traditional procedures.
"We hear from many of our patients who are eager for more control over their reproductive health," said Dr. Kate Starr, Planned Parenthood of Michigan's chief medical officer. "We're excited to offer vasectomy as part of our comprehensive range of sexual and reproductive health care services."
Planned Parenthood of Michigan president and CEO Paula Thornton Greear added that the launch is a crucial step in providing more options for Michiganders seeking permanent birth control.
"As attacks on sexual and reproductive health continue nationwide, we remain committed to helping Michiganders exercise their right to decide when and how they want to start or grow a family," she said. "We believe that everyone deserves access to comprehensive reproductive care, regardless of their circumstances."
The organization's decision comes after federal budget cuts from the Trump administration led Planned Parenthood of Michigan to close clinics and reduce staff in 2025. The launch of vasectomy services marks an important step forward for the nonprofit organization, which continues to push against efforts to restrict abortion access nationwide.
