At MOCA Geffen and The Brick, “Monuments” Probes the Line Between History and Propaganda

I just saw this exhibit at MOCA Geffen and it was mind-blowing 🤯! They're taking these monuments that were meant to glorify white supremacy but now are just plain ugly and turning them into something powerful. I love how Kara Walker's piece, "Unmanned Drone," took a bronze statue and turned it into this grotesque centaur... it's like she's saying, "Hey, you can't just erase history, but you can definitely change the way we see it" 🖼️.

I also appreciate how they're not just leaving out the problematic parts of American history. It's like they're holding up a mirror to our society and saying, "Yeah, we've been doing some pretty messed up stuff." It's both unsettling and necessary 💡.

The whole exhibit feels like a big ol' middle finger to the Lost Cause ideology 🤘. It's like they're taking these monuments that were meant to make white people feel special and turning them into something that makes us all uncomfortable. And you know what? That's exactly what we need more of in this country.

I'm not saying it's easy to look at, but I think that's the point. We need to be forced to confront our own biases and privilege. It's time to have some real conversations about systemic racism and how we can work towards a more just society.
