At this dark and turbulent moment, a newsroom's values matter – and ours are clear

As the world grapples with unprecedented turmoil, one institution remains steadfast in its commitment to truth and justice: the newsroom.

A newsroom's values are not just a set of guiding principles, but a reflection of its very identity. What stories do we choose to tell? Whose voices do we amplify? And what message do we convey to our audience? These are not trivial questions, but fundamental ones that shape the course of public discourse.

At The Guardian, our values are clear and unwavering: factual reporting, free from corporate and political influence, grounded in humane values. We believe that a press corps that is honest and uncompromised is essential to holding those in power accountable and providing a trustworthy counterpoint to the darkness and dishonesty that often pervades public life.

In a year marked by extrajudicial killings, retribution campaigns, and rolling back of civil rights, our reporting has been focused on the most urgent stories – but also on the resurgence of grassroots civic action. We've been heartened by the response from readers who see hope in these movements for fundamental change.

As we face a critical moment in US history, it's more important than ever that we have a press corps that can provide a moral compass. And so, we're launching our new movements reporting team to amplify stories about people fighting for rights and liberties.

On this Giving Tuesday, we're counting on your support to help us continue our work. Every gift – whether one-time or recurring – makes a difference in our ability to sustain our reporting throughout the year ahead. Your readership is not just a source of revenue; it's also a testament to the power of a free press and the importance of holding those in power accountable.

We're proud to be part of a community that has each other's backs, where every donation – no matter how small – makes a difference. And we're grateful for your readership and support, which not only fund our work but also inspire hope for a different future.

can't believe the state of the world rn 🤯 think the media's always been a reflection of society, like if you want to see real change, u gotta hold ppl in power accountable 💥 so i love @theguardian's commitment to factual reporting and amplifying grassroots movements 🌎 it's gonna take a lot more than just clicks to make a difference though 🤔 what can we really do as individuals? 🤷‍♀️

omg I'm so down w/ @TheGuardian on this 1 🤩 their commitment to fact-based reporting is everything in these crazy times 📰👮‍♂️ it's like they're saying we need an unbiased press corps to hold those in power accountable 💪 and let's be real, who else can we trust? 🙅‍♀️ on Giving Tuesday, I'm throwing a buck or two their way 🤑 every little bit counts, right? 💕 #SupportTheGuardian #FreePressMatters #GrassrootsCivicAction

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this whole "social media" thing I used to hear about in the early 2000s . But seriously, The Guardian is doing some amazing work by launching a new team focused on grassroots civic action and people fighting for rights and liberties. It's so important that they're giving a platform to those who are making a difference in their communities. I've been following their reporting for years, and it's always inspiring to see them hold those in power accountable 📰💡

I think its really cool that The Guardian is launching a new team to focus on stories about people fighting for rights & liberties 🤝💡. It's like they're trying to find those voices in the noise and give them a platform. I mean, it can't be easy to do fact-based reporting when there's so much info out there, but they seem committed to keeping things real 💯. Giving Tuesday is always a good idea, too - every little bit counts, right? Even if it's just $5 or something, it's still a donation that could make a difference in their work 🤑

I mean, can't say I don't love the idea of a press corps that's all about factual reporting and human values 📰💡. It's like, so refreshing to see a newsroom that's not just trying to stir up drama or sell papers. And I'm totally on board with amplifying stories about grassroots civic action – it gives me hope for the future too 😊. But, gotta ask, how do they plan on making money without all that corporate and political influence? Can't have a free press if you're not getting any revenue, right? 🤑

I'm getting old 😊, remember when news was all about Watergate and the Iran-Contra affair? Those were dark times, but at least the press was on top of it. Nowadays, it feels like they're just trying to keep up with the latest scandals 🤯. Still, I guess it's good that The Guardian is still around, fighting for the truth and all that jazz 💪. Giving Tuesday? Really? It's like we need reminders to support the press... back in my day, you didn't even have to think about it, it was just expected 💸.

📰💡 i think its super important for news outlets to stay true to their values and not get too caught up in who's paying the bills 🤑 but at the same time, its gotta be sustainable so they can keep doing what they do best - exposing the truth ⚠️ has anyone seen that new documentary on netflix about the impact of social media on democracy? 👀

📰 I mean, come on... Giving Tuesday? Are you kidding me? Can't they just make it a regular day of donations without the whole "celebrating" thing? It's like they're trying to guilt trip people into giving money. And what's with the emphasis on "hope for a different future"? Is that supposed to be some kind of sales pitch or something? 🤔

man I'm just so down for this 🤩. The Guardian's all about keepin' it real, you know? factual reporting is key, no corporate or political BS. And the fact that they're launchin' a new team to amplify grassroots movements, that's some next level stuff 💪. I mean we need more of that in the world right now. We gotta hold those in power accountable and keep the moral compass lit 🔦. Giving Tuesday is all about supportin' the good guys, and The Guardian's one of 'em 🙏. Every little bit counts, even if it's just a one-time donation or somethin'. Let's get behind this and make some real change, you feel? 👊

I'm literally so moved by this 🙌 The Guardian is doing such incredible work in holding those in power accountable and giving a voice to the marginalized. I think it's amazing that they're launching a new team to focus on grassroots civic action - we need more reporting like this 📰💪 It's Giving Tuesday, but I'd rather donate my time and energy to supporting organizations like The Guardian than just throwing cash at the problem... every small act of kindness counts 💕

I'm totally on board with The Guardian's commitment to factual reporting and holding those in power accountable 📰👮‍♀️. It's more important than ever that we have a press corps that can provide a moral compass, especially during times of turmoil like these. I love how they're launching a new movement reporting team to amplify stories about grassroots civic action - it's so inspiring to see people fighting for rights and liberties 💪🏽🔥. As someone who's grown up with the internet, I've seen firsthand how social media can be used to spread misinformation and propaganda...but The Guardian's commitment to free speech and factual reporting is more important than ever 🤝💡. So, on this Giving Tuesday, I'm happy to support their work - every little bit counts! 💸

I FEEL SO INSPIRED BY GUARDIAN'S COMMITMENT TO TRUTH AND JUSTICE!!! THEY'RE DOING SUCH AMAZING WORK IN EXPOSING THE DARKNESS AND HOLDING THOSE IN POWER ACCOUNTABLE. IT'S TIME FOR US AS A COMMUNITY TO BACK THEM UP TOO 🙌💖

🤔 I'm not sure if it's a good idea to launch a new team focused on grassroots movements... I mean, what about the corporations that are funding these groups? Are we just going to amplify their voices without any scrutiny? 🤑 Or maybe we should be looking into how the government is really supporting (or undermining) these movements? The more I think about it, the less clear things get. Can't we just focus on telling the stories that need to be told, regardless of who's behind them? 📰🤷‍♂️
