Australia swelters through fourth hottest January on record – as it happened

Australia has endured its fourth-hottest January on record, with nationwide temperatures soaring to a level 1.9C above the long-term average from 1961 to 1990. The scorching heatwave is just one of several weather extremes that have defined the past week.

Last month marked the 24th consecutive January in which Australia's mean temperature exceeded the long-term average, further cementing the country's position as one of the most climate-vulnerable nations on Earth.

The scorching temperatures were not limited to any one region; New South Wales had a standout month, with maximum temperatures setting records that are the second-highest on record.

In other news, auction activity has rebounded sharply this weekend, with 1,629 auctions scheduled, almost four times the number held last week. The preliminary clearance rate stands at 69.7%, higher than the actual rate of 59.4%.

Economists have mixed views on what the Reserve Bank's decision to hold interest rates steady will mean for Australians. While many expect a hike, some economists believe that most analysts have focused on core inflation and ignored downward trends in monthly data.

The NSW Government has introduced legislation to remove "good character" from being considered at sentencing hearings, which is expected to help people make informed decisions to reduce drug-related harm. The service will be free and anonymous for festival patrons who choose to bring a small sample to be checked on-site by qualified health staff.

In state politics, the Labor Government is tipped to take another landslide victory in South Australia's upcoming election, with opposition leader Ashton Hurn expected to struggle to recover from a poor start.

🌡️ oh man, australia is really feeling the heat right now... 1.9c above average? that's crazy! 🤯 i feel bad for all those people who have to deal with this kind of weather, it can't be easy living in a place where the temperature just keeps going up and up. 🌴 on the flip side, some good news about auctions rebounding sharply, 69.7% clearance rate? that's awesome! 💸 but what about those people struggling to make ends meet, is the economy gonna be okay? 🤔 also, i'm glad they're trying to help reduce drug-related harm with that new legislation, free and anonymous service sounds like a game changer 🌟

I think it's super worrying that Australia has had its 4th-hottest January on record 🤯! I mean, the fact that temps were 1.9C above average is crazy! It's no wonder that NSW had those record-breaking max temps - it just shows how climate change is having a major impact on our weather patterns 🌡️.

I'm also kinda curious about what economists think about the Reserve Bank's decision to keep interest rates steady... some are saying a hike, others are all like "hold up, let's not forget about those downward trends in monthly data" 📊. It's always interesting to see how different people interpret the same info.

It's awesome that NSW is making progress on reducing drug-related harm, though! The new legislation will definitely help people make informed decisions, and it's great that it'll be free and anonymous for festival-goers 🎉. But seriously, it's a big step towards creating safer communities.

What do you guys think about all these news bits? Are there any other topics that are keeping you up at night? 😬

omg australia is literally melting 🤯 this january has been so hot it's crazy! i mean i know climate change is no joke but 1.9c above average is just insane 🌡️ i've been following the auctions and it's wild to see the clearance rate go up like that 💸 hopefully it doesn't get affected by the heatwave too much in terms of prices... and ahh the NSW government's new legislation about good character sounds super cool 🙏 if people can make informed decisions about their health it could make a big difference 🤝

man, australia's climate is literally going up in flames 🤯 4th hottest january on record? that's not even a surprise considering all the droughts and fires we've had over the years. it's like, what can you do? but at the same time, i'm worried about how this will affect our economy, especially with interest rates staying the same 🤑 is that going to lead to inflation or something? and on a more positive note, it's awesome to see auctions bouncing back 📈 69.7% clearance rate is pretty impressive! but let's not forget about all the other issues we need to tackle, like our mental health services 🤝 the new legislation in NSW is a step in the right direction, tho 💚

I'm shocked at these temps! 1.9C above normal? That's crazy! It makes me think of all those terrible heatwaves back in the day when I was watching TRL on MTV 🙃. And Australia's always been prone to weird weather, but this is just getting out of hand! Has anyone else noticed how much climate change affects things these days? 🌡️

I'm also kinda stoked that auction activity is rebounding like that. I mean, who doesn't love a good bargain hunt? 😊 And 69.7% clearance rate? That's awesome! But at the same time, some of those economists are saying interest rates might stay steady... what does that even mean for us Aussies? 🤑

And hey, it's always great to see people taking steps towards reducing harm, like with the "good character" legislation. It's a small win, but every little bit counts, right? 💚

🌡️ just think about all the ppl who had to deal with this heatwave... no wonder some folks are gettin really anxious about climate change 🤯 its not just about us australia, it's about what's happenin globally 🌎 and the impact it has on every country. anyway, back to aussie politics 🇦🇺 - gotta say, i'm keepin an eye on those elections 🗳️ hope more ppl get involved in makin a difference 💪

man that australia is really feeling the heat this january 1.9c above average is insane 🤯 hope everyone stays safe and cool especially during these hot days 💦 meanwhile auction activity is back on track which is awesome for the housing market 💸 but i'm still curious about what's gonna happen with interest rates - some economists think hike, others say nope? 🤑 anyway, really glad to hear that the NSW government is working on reducing drug-related harm 💊 gotta give them props for introducing legislation that promotes public safety and well-being 👍

omg did u know australia just broke record for 4th hottest january ever?? 1.9c above avg temp is crazy 🔥💨 like what's going on with climate change? anyway, back to something slightly better - auction activity rebounded so hard this wknd i love how 69.7% clearance rate is pretty impressive 🤑📈 i just wish economists would agree on something for once lol, interest rates are such a mystery 💸️ meanwhile, nsw gov just introduced new legislation to help people make informed decisions about drug use 🤝 it's always good to see progress being made in that area 👍

aww man that australia is really suffering through this heatwave 🤕😓 hope everyone's staying cool and safe out there! i feel so bad for the ppl who are having to deal with it, especially those who are elderly or have health issues... can't imagine how tough it must be. 🌡️💦 meanwhile, it's good to see some positive news about auction activity rebounding, that's always a good sign for the economy 📈👍 but i'm also thinking about those ppl struggling with addiction and mental health, the new legislation about drug-related harm is really great news 💖😊

🤔 just wondering if australia is doing enough to address climate change? like, i know its not easy but the heatwaves are getting more intense and it's affecting so many people 🌡️. also, auction activity rebounding like that could be good news for ppl who need homes or something 😊. and about interest rates... idk man, economists seem to be divided on what's gonna happen next 🤷‍♀️. hope the new NSW legislation helps reduce drug-related harm tho 💕. and ugh, another landslide win for labor in sa 🚫

🌡️ Like I'm not surprised that Australia is melting like an ice cream in July 🍦😂. Four-hottest January on record? No biggie. It's just another day of the climate crisis, you know? And honestly, who needs a good character to consider at sentencing hearings when you can just chill with some free drug testing on-site? Sounds like common sense to me! 💯

But seriously, what's going on with these interest rates? Half the economists think they're gonna hike, half think they won't. You'd think we'd get some clarity by now 🤔. And on a more positive note, if the Labor Government wins in South Australia, that's some good news for... well, everyone, I guess 😊.

One thing though - can we please just focus on the real issues here? Climate change is no joke, and it's time to take action. Not sure about this whole "good character" thing being a priority over addressing the root causes of drug addiction 🤷‍♂️.

Ugh, can we talk about climate change for a sec? I'm seriously getting worried about our planet, especially countries like Aus that are super vulnerable to extreme weather events. Like, they're basically saying "we've had it up to here" with these record-breaking temps 🌡️💦. On a more positive note tho, auctions are back in action, and I love how they're rebounding! 69.7% clearance rate? Not bad at all 😊. But seriously though, let's hope we can get our priorities straight and focus on the environment before it's too late 🌎💚

Wow 🤯 this Aussie heatwave is insane! Like, it's not just the 1.9C above average temps that's crazy, but also how it's happening on top of all these other extreme weather events... Interesting 😬

I'm so sure that Australia's climate situation is going to get worse before it gets better... 🌡️😓 and yet at the same time, I'm 100% convinced that this heatwave is just a normal part of our country's weather patterns... 🤔🌴. Like, what even is a normal temperature anymore? And don't even get me started on the economy, economists are all over the place with their predictions, some say rates will go up, others say they'll stay steady... 🤑💸. I mean, who can trust anyone when it comes to financial stuff? But at least in state politics, there's some hope that change might come for those struggling with addiction... 🌈💕. And auction activity is back on track, which is definitely a good thing... 🏠🎉. Ugh, I'm all confused now! 😂

man australia is literally burning like crazy 1.9 degrees above average is wild and the interest rate thingy has everyone all over the place some ppl think it's gonna go up while others are all like no way can't believe they're not even considering the good stuff 🤔💸 anyway did u hear about the changes in sentencing laws in NSW? i'm low-key impressed that they're trying to make a difference for festival-goers who might wanna check their samples on site lol it's not much but every little bit counts, right? 😊

Australia's climate is literally out of control 🌡️🔥! Like, it's getting so hot that even scientists are saying we're in trouble. I mean, 1.9C above average? That's wild 🔮. And the fact that this is just one of many extreme weather events this year... it's like the planet is on fire 🔥. But hey, at least there's some good news about auctions rebounding 📈. Maybe we can focus on rebuilding and adapting to climate change instead of constantly freaking out 😬.

I don't usually comment but I think it's wild that auction activity has rebounded so sharply this weekend 🤯. Like, what's driving the demand right now? Is it just people trying to get in on the market before prices rise or is there actually something changing about the economy? I'm still trying to wrap my head around those interest rate decisions and how they're going to affect us regular folks... 💸🤑

Ugh, I just can't believe how much things have changed 🤯... like remember when we used to worry about just extreme weather events, now it's like we're living in a perpetual sauna over there! I mean, 1.9C above average is no joke, that's crazy heatwave stuff 😓. And Australia's always been one of the worst hit, but it's like they're taking it so much harder than the rest... you know what I used to think was hot back in my day? 🤣... but I guess we've got a whole new definition now.

On another note, auctions rebounding like that? That's wild! I went to one of those with my aunt back in '07 and it took forever just to get the hammer down 💸. Now it's like they're doing them every other weekend or something... and people are actually interested 🤑. Can't say I'm surprised though, prices have been rising left and right.

And oh man, the Reserve Bank's decision is gonna be interesting... I mean, hold interest rates steady? That sounds like some ancient economic mumbo-jumbo to me 🤷‍♂️. Some people think there'll be a hike, but others are all about that core inflation life... meanwhile, I'm just over here wondering what's really going on 😒.

Australia's heatwave is getting crazy 🔥! I mean, 1.9C above average? That's wild! And it's not just the heat, but also the fact that they've had consecutive Januaries with temps above avg for 24 months now... that's a lot of sunshine ☀️. But what really gets me is how auction activity has rebounded - 1,629 auctions this weekend? That's like, a whole lotta real estate changing hands 💸. Not sure about the interest rates though... I mean, some economists think it'll be hiked but others are all about core inflation and down trends in monthly data 📊.
