Back on track: how lockdown led to a new operatic version of The Railway Children

Lockdown turned lockdown to an unlikely artistic collaboration: Mark-Anthony Turnage's new operatic adaptation of E Nesbit's beloved classic, The Railway Children.

The pandemic prompted a unique creative partnership between composer Mark-Anthony Turnage and his partner Rachael Hewer, who works as an assistant director at Glyndebourne Opera House. During their months-long lockdown, the duo found themselves with ample time to work on a new opera that they had long discussed but never managed to write.

The Railway Children was chosen for its timeless appeal and availability of copyright, which meant no permission was required from the original author or publishers. Turnage and Hewer approached this project as an opportunity to reinvigorate E Nesbit's classic children's story with modern updates.

Their collaboration involved a workshop-style process where they brought in a group of talented singers to work on scenes in secret. This allowed them to gauge the opera's potential and scope without alerting anyone outside their inner circle.

Once the pandemic eased, Turnage and Hewer sent the full-length opera to Glyndebourne's artistic director Stephen Langridge with an unusual marketing ploy - sending a printed copy of the complete work along with a fun-size Wispa bar to hint at its existence.

It was to their surprise that Langridge accepted the project, suggesting Turnage direct it himself, and subsequently announcing the production on Glyndebourne's website.

The story marks an extraordinary artistic collaboration in response to an unprecedented global crisis.

πŸ€” Still can't believe how some people come up with this stuff... Lockdown turns into art project? I mean, if it works, kudos to them for making something out of nothing. The fact that they snuck around and didn't tell anyone outside their inner circle shows some serious dedication and trust in each other's work. Sending a bar of chocolate as a marketing ploy tho... πŸ«πŸ˜‚ Can you imagine getting that in the mail? Anyway, I guess it's cool to see how art can thrive even during tough times πŸ’–

πŸ€” I'm not sure about this one... I mean, I love a good opera as much as the next person, but a printed copy of a full-length opera coming with a Wispa bar? 🍫 It's just so... weird. And what's up with Glyndebourne sending out free stuff to anyone who takes it? Don't they know that's like, spamming? πŸ˜‚ Plus, I'm not sure how much of this "workshop-style process" actually happened - it sounds like a fancy way of saying "we threw some singers together and hoped for the best". And Stephen Langridge accepting a full-length opera without even seeing a trailer or anything seems like a major risk. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ Can't they just stick to a normal, tried-and-true marketing strategy? 😬

OMG 🀯 can you believe lockdown actually led to something so amazing?! I mean, I was stuck at home with nothing to do but binge-watch shows and eat too much chocolate... who knew it could lead to a beautiful opera adaptation of The Railway Children? Mark-Anthony Turnage & Rachael Hewer are like the ultimate power couple of art 🀝🌟. That Wispa bar trick is genius, btw πŸ«πŸ˜‚. I'm so excited to see this production come together at Glyndebourne Opera House - it's gonna be a wild ride! πŸ˜„

omg this is insane!! lockdown turned into a genius collab between turnage and hewer 🀯! i mean who needs a bunch of ppl when u got talent & imagination? it's like they took the pandemic as an opportunity to get creative & make magic happen πŸ’« 'the railway children' opera is gonna be EPIC i can already imagine the scenes, the music, the drama 🎭🎡 cant wait for this!

I'm loving this turn of events! I mean, who would've thought a pandemic-induced lockdown could lead to an epic opera collaboration? πŸ˜‚ The fact that Turnage and Hewer were able to tap into their creativity and work on something so special in secret is just genius 🀯. And I love the idea of sending out these fun-size Wispa bars like some kind of underground message πŸ˜„. It's amazing how a simple marketing ploy can lead to a production being announced and getting everyone excited about it! The Railway Children deserves all the hype, TBH πŸ‘

omg what a genius move by mark-anthony turnage & rachael hewer! 🀯 lockdown = ultimate creative reboot! who needs collaboration when u got months of isolation? πŸ˜‚ seriously tho, i love how they approached this project with a workshop-style process & kept it under wraps to gauge the opera's potential. sounds like a recipe for genius to me! and btw, fun-size wispa bar as a marketing ploy is pure genius πŸ‘€ gotta wonder what other creative ideas u guys would come up with during that lockdown πŸ€”

I'm totally stoked about this new opera adaptation of The Railway Children πŸš‚πŸŽ΅! Who would've thought that a lockdown could lead to such an amazing creative partnership between Mark-Anthony Turnage and Rachael Hewer? It's like they say, 'out of chaos comes creation' 😊. I love how they took E Nesbit's classic story and gave it a modern twist - it's gonna be so much fun to see! πŸ’₯ The fact that they worked in secret with a group of talented singers is pure genius 🀩. And can you believe they sent a printed copy of the opera along with a Wispa bar? Genius marketing, if you ask me πŸ˜‚. Bring on the performance - I'm all ears for this one! πŸ‘‚

πŸ€” think about all those months stuck at home with nothin' but their thoughts... that can be both a curse and a blessing i mean, who needs distractions when you got creativity floodin' your brain? πŸ’‘ for turnage & hewer, it was like gettin' free rent on their imagination πŸ πŸ’«

πŸ€” I'm genuinely impressed by this unlikely art collab πŸŽ¨πŸ’«! Who would've thought that a lockdown could lead to something as beautiful as an opera adaptation of The Railway Children? πŸš‚ It's amazing how Mark-Anthony Turnage and Rachael Hewer were able to bring new life to E Nesbit's classic story. I love the idea of them keeping it under wraps, like a secret project πŸ’‘, and then surprising everyone with the full-length opera πŸŽ‰. And that marketing ploy? Genius! 🀣 Sending a printed copy with a fun-size Wispa bar was such a creative way to hint at its existence πŸ˜‚. It just goes to show that even in difficult times, art can thrive and bring people together πŸ’•.

Just read about this opera thingy 🎡. Think it's kinda cool how Turnage & his partner Rachael Hewer made something beautiful out of lockdown boredom πŸ˜‚. The way they worked on it in secret with a group of singers, like a big ol' creative experiment... genius! πŸ’‘ Then sending the full opus to Glyndebourne with a fun-size Wispa bar? Nice touch 🍫. Guess you could say their collaboration was the conductor of some magic ✨.

🀫 just saw this and i'm like wth? a lockdown turning into a creative collab πŸš‚πŸ’‘ i mean it's cool that they were able to tap into something timeless like The Railway Children, but the fact that they had to resort to sending a bar of chocolate as a marketing ploy πŸ«πŸ˜‚ is just genius. who needs social media when you can drop a fun-size Wispa and get the word out? 🀣

I'm so over how they're hyping up this opera thingy πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ... like, who thought sending a printed copy of the complete work with a fun-size Wispa bar was a good idea? πŸ«πŸ˜’ And what's with the secrecy, though? I mean, I get it, they wanted to keep it under wraps, but come on, it's an opera about three kids and their adventures on the train! πŸš‚ It should be all about the drama and the music, not some sneaky marketing ploy. πŸ’”

🀝 I think this is actually kinda cool how these two artists managed to come together during a lockdown. It's like they found a silver lining in the pandemic and decided to turn it into something creative instead of letting it bring them down. And, you know, who wouldn't want a printed copy of an opera that comes with a fun-size Wispa bar πŸ«πŸ“? I mean, it's not every day you see artists using marketing ploys like that. It shows that they're willing to think outside the box and take some risks. And, in the end, it led to something really special happening - an artistic collaboration between Turnage and Hewer that resulted in The Railway Children opera! πŸ’•

I love how lockdown became a creative catalyst for this amazing opera adaptation πŸŽπŸ’‘ The way Turnage and Hewer worked together, bringing in talented singers for workshops without alerting anyone else, is so genius πŸ’₯ It's wild that they even sent a printed copy of the full-length opera along with a Wispa bar as a marketing move - who wouldn't want to try that unique treat? πŸ«πŸ˜‚ And I'm thrilled to see how this unlikely collaboration came together, giving E Nesbit's classic story a modern update. It's like the pandemic ended up being a blessing in disguise for art! 🌈

🀯 This lockdown thing sure did spark some creativity! I mean, who would've thought an opa and a kids book could come together? πŸŽ΅πŸ’• Turns out, just because the world slowed down didn't mean art had to too... πŸ‘

I'm so down for this operatic adaptation of The Railway Children πŸŽΆπŸš‚. I mean, who wouldn't want to see a modern take on E Nesbit's classic tale? It's like the pandemic was the catalyst for something amazing. I love that Mark-Anthony Turnage and Rachael Hewer worked together in secret, bringing in singers from all over to work on scenes without anyone else knowing what they were doing 🀫. That workshop-style process must have been so cool! And sending a printed copy of the opera with a fun-size Wispa bar? Genius marketing move πŸ˜‚πŸ«. I'm excited to see how it turns out, and I think this collaboration is just what we need after all that lockdown time. It's like the pandemic finally gave us something beautiful in return 🌞.

I gotta say, I love this! 🀩 The way these two creatives came together during lockdown to bring new life to a classic tale is just amazing. It's like they turned a potential obstacle into a blessing in disguise. I mean who needs conventional ways of working when you've got talent and dedication on your side? πŸ’‘ And the idea of sending a complete opera along with a fun-size Wispa bar - genius! πŸ˜‚ The fact that it all came together so seamlessly is a testament to their hard work and trust in each other. It's also lovely to see how they approached this project as an opportunity to update a timeless story, rather than just rehashing the original. Kudos to them both! πŸ‘

aww this is so beautiful! πŸ’• I mean can you even imagine how isolating lockdown must have been for both Mark-Anthony Turnage and Rachael Hewer? but instead of letting it bring them down, they used that time to create something stunning together πŸŒŸπŸ’« like, a true testament to human connection and collaboration. And to think that The Railway Children, this beloved classic story, got a modern update that's all about hope and resilience πŸ˜ŠπŸš‚ I'm totally here for this!

so interesting to think about how something as gloomy as a lockdown can lead to something creative like this 😊. i mean, who would've thought that being stuck at home with someone could result in a brand new opera? it's amazing how Turnage and Hewer were able to tap into each other's creativity and turn something they'd been talking about for ages into reality.

i'm also loving the fact that they did it without drawing attention to themselves, just kind of sent out this small package with a fun snack 🍫. like, no big fanfare or anything - they just let the work speak for itself.

anyway, can't wait to see how The Railway Children turns out on stage πŸ’ΌπŸŽ
