Ben Goldscheider/ Richard Uttley review – a horn, a piano … and a braying donkey

A recital that seamlessly blended old and new, horn player Ben Goldscheider and pianist Richard Uttley delivered a sonorous and richly satisfying performance at lunchtime. Their pairing proved fortuitous, each artist attuned to the other's musical sensibilities, and virtuosic in equal measure.

The concert opened with Schumann's Three Fantasiestücke, Op 73, an unusual choice for horn, but one that was aptly suited by Goldscheider's lyrical playing. The full Romanticism of Schumann shone through, showcasing the duo's infinite musical understanding and precision.

Simon Holt's The Bell, written specifically for this duo in 2022, made a striking impression with its opening spikiness and subsequent exchanges between the instruments. The contrast between Goldscheider's horn and Uttley's piano was marked, particularly with the bell-like sounds on top of the keyboard creating an evocative foil to the horn.

Oliver Leith's Eeyore, another work originally premiered by Goldscheider and Uttley, demonstrated the duo's knack for humour. The melancholic donkey braying took centre stage, rendered with affectionate mocking that sustained the musical argument over four sections.

The setlist also included Scriabin's Romance for Horn and Piano, an early work full of passion and conviction, albeit tantalisingly brief. Esa-Pekka Salonen's Horn Music 1 delivered a dynamic interpretation, punctuated by Goldscheider's extended horn solo which brought added flair.

But the true showstopper was Mahler's Urlicht – or "Primordial Light" as it translates to English. A sly reference to Mahler's song-series Des Knaben Wunderhorn (The Boy's Magic Horn), Goldscheider's performance unfolded with expressive line and a lambent glow, moving the audience deeply.

Throughout their concert, Goldscheider and Uttley demonstrated an unimpeachable musical partnership that brought out the best in each other. Their recital was a testament to the transformative power of collaboration, turning disparate works into a cohesive whole that resonated with awe-inspiring effect.

man, that horn player Ben Goldscheider & pianist Richard Uttley are on another level 🤩! they got that magic chemistry where they just vibe off each other, like they're speaking the same language musically 💬. i loved how they mixed old & new stuff, it was like a beautiful blend of nostalgia and innovation 🌈. Mahler's Urlicht tho, was that a bold move by Goldscheider? took some serious guts to go all in on that one 🤺♂️! anyway, can't wait to see what they do next 👀

🎵 this recital is pure magic, the way Goldscheider and Uttley worked together like two peas in a pod is mind-blowing 🤩 their chemistry on stage was palpable, each musician feeding off the other's energy and creating something truly special... and that Mahler piece? wow! 😍 goldscheider's playing has this dreamy quality to it, it's like he's conjuring up these ethereal sounds out of thin air 💫 what a privilege to witness such artistry in action 🙌

🎵😍 oh my gosh I am still reeling from that concert!! Ben Goldscheider and Richard Uttley are absolute magic together, like they were meant to play those pieces specifically for each other 🙌 their chemistry is just palpable, you can tell they trust each other completely on stage. The way they brought out the best in Schumann's music was insane, I mean who knew horn could be so emotive? 🤯 and that Mahler piece was pure perfection - Goldscheider just transported me to another world with his expressive playing. I'm so grateful for musicians like these who can bring people together through their passion and talent ❤️

I gotta say, I'm not exactly sure what to make of these horn and piano recitals 🤔. Don't get me wrong, Ben Goldscheider and Richard Uttley sound like they're really vibing together on stage, but is it really necessary for a concert? Like, can't we just stick to the usual guitar or violin stuff? 🎸 And what's with all these classical pieces being performed live? Don't they know that's just so... old school? 😴

I just got back from this concert with Ben Goldscheider and Richard Uttley 🎵👏 and I'm still reeling from the experience. What really stood out to me was how well they blended old and new, like you said - it was seamless! And their chemistry on stage is undeniable 💕. Schumann's music was so beautifully executed, and that horn piece by Simon Holt? Mind blown 🤯. But what really got me was the last piece, Mahler's Urlicht - Goldscheider's performance just spoke to something deep within me... it was like nothing I've ever heard before 😊. The way they worked together as a team, bringing out the best in each other... it's truly inspiring 🤝. How do you think more artists can achieve that kind of magic? 🤔

I'm so over these "Collaboration Concerts"... 🙄 I mean don't get me wrong, it's nice to see musicians working together and all that jazz. But seriously, can't we just have some new music instead of playing old stuff over and over? Like, I know the Scriabin piece was early but c'mon, it felt like they were just checking off their classical bucket list. 🤣

🎵 so this concert was pretty good i guess? they seemed to mesh well together but idk if it was just because they'd played together before or if there's actual technique involved 🤔. goldscheider's horn playing was nice and all, but some of the music choices felt a bit random - schumann's three fantasiestücke is pretty old for a horn concerto? also what's with the scriabin romance? that's like a 2 min piano piece... not exactly sure how it fits into this recital 🤷‍♂️. overall, it sounds like goldscheider and uttley are a solid duo but i need more info on why they chose those specific pieces 📚

man i'm so glad i got to experience this concert it's like ben goldscheider and richard utley are meant to play together their connection is so strong you can feel the music just blend together seamlessly i love how they both brought out each other's strengths, like when simon holt's "the bell" started off all spiky and then became this beautiful conversation between horn and piano it was magic 🎵

I'm totally blown away by this horn & piano duo's performance! 🎵 I mean, who knew horn could sound so beautiful and emotive? Ben Goldscheider's playing is insane 💥, and Richard Uttley's piano skills are on point too 🤩. The way they combined old and new pieces, like Schumann's Three Fantasiestücke with Simon Holt's The Bell, was pure magic ✨. I loved how the contrast between their instruments created this amazing foil effect 🔊. And that final piece, Mahler's Urlicht? Absolutely breathtaking 💫! It shows how music can bring people together and create something truly special when we collaborate 🌎.

Just saw this super dope horn & piano concert at lunchtime 🎵💥 and I'm still reeling from it! The guy playing the horn, Ben Goldscheider, is literally insane on his instrument... his tone is so rich and emotive it gives me chills 😲. And the pianist, Richard Uttley, is just as talented - their chemistry on stage is undeniable 🤝.

I loved how they mixed old & new, like Schumann's classical pieces with some modern stuff that was actually really well-written... it was a total vibe check 🔙. But what really stood out to me was Mahler's Urlicht - Goldscheider's solo was pure magic ✨. Anyway, if you're into classical music, you gotta check this out 👉 [link to video]

🤣 gotta say, i'm so over all these "classical music for dummies" concerts where they just pair up some old dude on piano or violin with someone who's like 30 and thinks they're still cool 🎸. but seriously though, ben goldscheider and richard uttley are kinda the real deal... i mean, schumann's three fantasiestücke? that's like a bold move right there 💁‍♂️, and simon holt's "the bell" is actually pretty lit 🔥, especially with that piano-horn combo. but let's be real, mahler's urlicht was the star of the show... that lambent glow though 🕯️ it gave me all the feels 💔

I'm still buzzing from their performance last night 🤩! I mean, Schumann's Three Fantasiestücke is not your usual horn fare, but Ben Goldscheider made it work in such a beautiful way 😊. And Simon Holt's The Bell was like nothing I've ever heard before - the contrast between the piano and horn was so striking 🎺👏. But what really got me was Mahler's Urlicht, it's like they were speaking straight to my soul ❤️. Goldscheider's solo was just wow! 👍

🎶 this recital was like a breath of fresh air! i loved how Ben Goldscheider and Richard Uttley just clicked 🤝, their chemistry on stage was undeniable. and omg the Mahler piece... goldscheider's horn playing brought chills every time 🥰 it's amazing how they managed to blend old and new pieces together seamlessly. i'm not usually into classical music but this duo made me wanna listen more 🎧

🎵 I'm loving how this horn player Ben Goldscheider teamed up with pianist Richard Uttley, it's like they were meant to play together! They totally killed it on stage, I mean, who knew Schumann's Three Fantasiestücke could sound so beautiful on the horn? 🤯 And that Simon Holt piece, The Bell, was insane - the contrast between Goldscheider's horn and Uttley's piano was like nothing I've ever heard before. It's clear they have a deep understanding of each other's music styles. Oliver Leith's Eeyore was also hilarious, I mean, who wouldn't want to hear donkey noises on the piano? 😂 The Mahler piece, Urlicht, was just incredible - Goldscheider's performance was so expressive and emotive, it brought chills down my spine. It's a testament to how great collaborations can be when both artists are on the same page musically. Can't wait to hear more from this duo! 🎶

lol what a lovely performance btw i just found this thread after it's already over lol 🤦‍♂️ anyway im loving the way Goldscheider and Uttley played Mahler's Urlicht - that horn solo tho was something else 🙌 goldscheider's playing is always so emotive, but this time it felt like he was really conjuring up this primordial light vibe 💫 i also loved how they balanced out the lighter pieces with the heavier ones, like Scriabin's Romance and Eesa-Pekka Salonen's Horn Music 1 - it kept things interesting throughout 🎵

You know what struck me about this concert? It's not just about two talented musicians coming together, it's about how their partnership can elevate each other's artistry and create something truly special 🎶. It made me think about how in our own lives, when we surround ourselves with people who inspire and challenge us, that's when the magic happens 💡. We need to find those people who complement our strengths and weaknesses, just like Goldscheider and Uttley did, and learn to appreciate their unique contributions 🤝. It's all about finding that perfect harmony in life and music! ❤️

😒 just heard about how climate change is causing a mass extinction event among coral reefs... 30% of the world's coral species are already extinct and it's only going to get worse 🌴🐳

I'm still low-key obsessed with this new horn player Ben Goldscheider 🤟♂️. His sound is like butter for my ears, so smooth and rich! And that pianist Richard Uttley is on point too, their chemistry on stage is undeniable 💥. The way they played Schumann's Fantasiestücke together, it was like a dream come true... the full Romanticism of it all, I'm getting chills thinking about it 😎. They even threw in some Simon Holt and Oliver Leith stuff that had me giggling - their Eeyore piece is hilarious! 😂

🎵 I just listened to this concert and OMG the horn player Ben Goldscheider is MIND BLOWN 🤯! He's got such great chemistry with his piano partner Richard Uttley too, it was like they're speaking each other's languages on stage. The way they mixed old and new music, like Schumann and Scriabin, was so cool. And that last piece Mahler's Urlicht? Give me all the feels! It felt so emotional and beautiful, I'm still getting chills thinking about it 😊. Can we get more concerts like this? 🎟️
