Brazil's Bolsonaro finds novel way to reduce 27-year sentence: reading books

Bolsonaro Seeks Literary Escape from 27-Year Sentence by Reading Books, But Can He Handle the Text?

A novel approach by Bolsonaro's lawyers has led to the former far-right Brazilian president being given a chance to cut his 27-year prison sentence by reading books. Brazilian law allows inmates to reduce their sentences by four days for each title read, and it appears Bolsonaro will take advantage of this opportunity.

However, his affinity for literature remains questionable. "Sorry, I don't have time to read," he once said. "It's been three years since I read a book." Despite the lack of interest in reading, Bolsonaro's lawyers successfully petitioned the court for him to participate in the scheme, which includes books on Indigenous rights, racism, environmental issues, and the violence of Brazil's 1964-85 dictatorship.

The approved list of readings seems unlikely to appeal to Bolsonaro. The titles include Ana Maria Gonçalves' 950-page "A Colour Defect", a historical account from a Black woman's perspective, as well as Philip Bunting's children's book "Democracy!" and works by authors such as Leo Tolstoy and Miguel de Cervantes.

The books chosen for the reading list are substantial, with some titles exceeding 1,000 pages. However, it is unclear if Bolsonaro will be able to read them all, given his past reluctance to engage in literary pursuits. His favorite book from the 2018 presidential election was one by Carlos Alberto Brilhante Ustra, a notorious army colonel accused of torture during the dictatorship.

Ustra's book does not feature on the justice system's approved reading list but does include Marcelo Rubens Paiva's "I'm Still Here", which deals with the plight of prisoners who disappeared into torture centers. Whether Bolsonaro will be able to handle the complex themes and texts in this list remains to be seen.

For now, it appears that Bolsonaro has a new opportunity to reduce his sentence while engaging in activities he previously deemed too time-consuming. However, the prospect of him tackling books on sensitive topics like Indigenous rights and the dictatorship is uncertain, to say the least.

so its funny how bolsonaro's lawyers managed to get him into this reading deal considering he said he dont got time for it lol 🀣 but i guess its better than just getting in trouble 4 real. the book list looks pretty intense tho like what's gonna happen wen he tries 2 tackle those pages on indigenous rights & the dictatorship? his history of dismissin' sensitive topics kinda raises some concerns about whether he can actually handle it

I wonder if this is just another case of people trying to escape from their problems rather than facing them head-on πŸ€”. I mean, Bolsonaro's been in a tight spot for 27 years and now he's looking for an easy way out? πŸ“š It's like he thinks reading books will somehow magically erase the past and make everything okay. Newsflash: it won't πŸ˜•.

The thing is, if he really wants to learn and grow from his mistakes, then maybe he should start with some self-reflection rather than just picking up a book 🀯. I mean, how many times can you read about Indigenous rights or environmental issues before you actually understand the impact of your actions? 🌎

And let's be real, if he's really interested in learning, then why did he say "Sorry, I don't have time to read" in the first place? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ It seems like a convenient excuse to avoid getting his hands dirty with some hard truth. 🚫

man...bolsonaro thinks he can just read some books to get outta prison? like, good luck with that 🀣 27 years is a long time, dude. i'm not buying it. he's been saying he don't got time for reading, but now he's like "oh, wait, maybe this will work". meanwhile, these books are super heavy stuff...i mean, 950 pages? are you kiddin' me? bolsonaro's gotta be outta his mind to think he can handle that. and what about the sensitive topics? indigenous rights, racism...that's some tough stuff for someone who's been accused of torture himself πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. i'll believe it when i see it

I'm actually thinking about trying a new recipe for breakfast this weekend πŸ₯... I've heard that adding some matcha powder to oatmeal gives it such a nice green tea flavor 😊. Has anyone else tried it? Should I add it to my shopping list? And, btw, have you guys seen those adorable cat videos on TikTok lately? The ones where they're just sitting in front of the camera, looking all smug and cute πŸ±πŸ’€...

I'm low-key surprised they're giving him this chance πŸ€”. I mean, Bolsonaro's been pretty vocal about his views on, you know, everything, so it's gonna be interesting to see how he handles books that might challenge his perspective. He does seem kinda... basic for a 27-year sentence reduction deal though πŸ˜‚. I'm curious if he'll actually finish some of those massive novels, or just skim through 'em like he did Ustra's book πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. Still, it's not like we have any control over the outcome, right? Guess only time (and his reading list) will tell πŸ“šπŸ’

πŸ€” I think this is kinda cool, you know? Like, who wouldn't wanna try to cut their sentence by reading some good books? πŸ“š I mean, Bolsonaro's got a lot of time on his hands in there, and it's not like he's gonna get bored or anything. Plus, these books are all pretty heavy stuff - Indigenous rights, racism, dictatorship... that's some serious thinking to do! 😊 Maybe this is just the thing to make him finally pick up a book (and actually finish one this time πŸ˜‰). And who knows, maybe reading some Leo Tolstoy and Miguel de Cervantes will even make him kinda... enlightened? πŸ€“ Wouldn't that be something? πŸ’‘

he's really gonna try reading 950-page books lol 🀣 I wonder if he'll even get past the first chapter, considering his history of not having time for literature πŸ˜‚

I mean, have you ever tried reading a 950-page book in one go? I did it last year for a friend's birthday πŸŽ‚, and let me tell you, it was a real challenge. I think Bolsonaro might need some help finding a comfy spot to read all those pages, or maybe just take breaks every now and then like I do when watching football matches ⚽️... did you know that Brazilian soccer is super popular worldwide?

I dont think its funny or clever that Bolsonaro is getting away with this. Its just a way for him to avoid real change and accountability for his actions as president. Reading books about Indigenous rights and environmental issues wont magically make him a better person. He needs to take responsibility for his policies and the harm they caused. This scheme feels like a Band-Aid solution to me πŸ€”

πŸ€” This is a pretty interesting turn of events for Jair Bolsonaro. On one hand, I think it's great that he's getting a chance to reduce his sentence by doing something positive, even if it's just reading books πŸ“š. It shows that the system is willing to give him a break and maybe help him grow as a person.

On the other hand, I'm not sure how much of an impact these books will actually have on him. I mean, he's already shown that he's not interested in reading, and some of the topics might be pretty heavy for someone who's never really engaged with literature before πŸ“–. It's like trying to teach a dog new tricks - it's not going to happen overnight.

I think what's most interesting is how this will affect his team and supporters back in Brazil. Are they going to pressure him to take on some of the books, or are they just going to hope that he magically develops an interest in literature overnight? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Either way, it'll be fun to watch and see how this all plays out.

idk about bolsonaro reading these huge books πŸ€” lol what's next gonna be him listening to audiobooks? πŸ˜‚ but seriously tho, this is some wild stuff. they're really hoping he'll read these books on indigenous rights and dictatorship stuff... like how is that supposed to help his case or show remorse for his actions? πŸ™„ and the fact that he only said sorry when it was time to vote out of convenience πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

I gotta wonder if Bolsonaro's gonna stick with it πŸ€”. He's always been about short-form info, you know? Like a Twitter thread vs a 950-page book πŸ“š. I'm not saying he can't learn or grow, but these books are some heavy stuff. He's gonna have to get into the mindset of Indigenous rights and Brazil's dark dictatorship history... it's a big ask 😬. And let's be real, his past comments on reading aren't exactly inspiring πŸ˜‚. Still, I guess this could be an opportunity for him to show some growth? 🀞

can't believe bolsonaro's lawyers are serious about getting him to read these massive novels 🀯 i mean, the guy already said he doesn't have time for reading, but now they're throwing him a bone and expecting him to devour 950-page books? πŸ“– it's gonna be super interesting to see how this plays out, especially considering his past reactions to books on sensitive topics... will he actually take this opportunity or just pretend to read to get out of his sentence sooner? πŸ€”

He's gonna struggle with these reads lol πŸ‘€. Can't imagine him diving into a 950-page book πŸ“–. Might as well try reading the phonebook πŸ“ž. This guy's got a lot of 'splainin' to do after this is all said and done πŸ™„.

πŸ€” So like if he can't even read books that he actually wants to, how's he gonna handle all this heavy stuff? πŸ“šπŸ’‘ And 950 pages of "A Colour Defect" sounds like a total snooze fest for him... I mean, who reads a book about their own colour defect? πŸ˜‚ Still, gotta give points for trying to cut his sentence, but if he's not even reading what he wants, is it really worth the effort? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

I'm not buying this whole thing lol πŸ˜‚ . Like, Bolsonaro's all about reading up on Indigenous rights now? 🀣 Given his history with those dictators back in the day, it's hard to believe he'll just magically become a bookworm overnight πŸ“–. The list of books seems pretty heavy-handed, even for someone looking to cut their sentence short. It's almost like they're trying to make him uncomfortable πŸ€”. I mean, can we really trust that Bolsonaro will actually read these books and not just skim the surface? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Let's keep an eye on this one πŸ‘€

omg can you believe this dude's trying to escape jail by reading books lol but honestly, if he's gonna try to tackle some heavy stuff like indigenous rights and dictatorship, i gotta question his commitment πŸ’”πŸ’ idk how a 950-page book is gonna fly under the radar for him tho πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ especially with titles that deal with sensitive topics... it seems like a publicity stunt more than an actual attempt at reform πŸ“šπŸ‘€

idk if bolsonaro's gonna actually finish reading all those books... sounds like a joke 🀣 i mean, his favorite book was from an army colonel accused of torture lol what kind of guy reads that? anyway, maybe this will be some kinda wake-up call for him or something... but honestly, it's hard to see him actually getting into it. he's always been pretty outspoken about his views, so it'll be interesting to see if he can handle more nuanced stuff like indigenous rights and environmental issues πŸ€”

I think this is gonna be a trainwreck πŸš‚πŸ“–. Bolsonaro's lawyers are trying to turn him into some kinda literary nerd but I'm not buying it πŸ˜’. I mean, he's been in politics for ages and still thinks reading books is beneath him? 27 years of prison sentence and now they're giving him a get outta jail free card by reading some books? 🀯 It's all good if he actually sticks to the list tho lol. But what if he gets bored or can't handle the texts? 😳 Those books on Indigenous rights and dictatorship are no joke, fam! πŸ‘Š
