British Olympic & Paralympic athletes get online abuse protection

UK Sport has signed a major contract worth over £300,000 to provide a new AI-based system for detecting and hiding online abuse from British athletes. The Social Protect app will offer protection across various platforms including Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube and will cover all UK athletes until the 2028 Olympics.

The deal comes amid growing concerns about the impact of social media on athletes' mental wellbeing and performance. UK Sport's director of performance, Kate Baker, stated that online abuse is unacceptable and the company cannot do nothing to address it.

Kirsty Gilmour, a three-time Olympic badminton athlete, has been subjected to death and rape threats during her career, but feels reassured by the new protection offered through Social Protect. "It feels empowering and like a real force field around my little corner of the internet," she said.

The app uses AI to scan incoming social media posts in real time and automatically hide abusive content or words that athletes find upsetting. However, it is not compatible with platform X (formerly Twitter), where 82% of abuse sent to football managers and players originated.

I'm all for this new initiative! 🙌 It's about time we take online abuse seriously, especially in the sports world where mental wellbeing can be a major issue. Kirsty Gilmour's story is just heartbreaking - death and rape threats? No athlete should ever have to go through that! 😱 The fact that Social Protect is offering protection across multiple platforms is a huge step forward. I do wonder why they can't get it working with platform X, though... 82% of abuse comes from there, after all 🤔

I'm so glad they're finally doing something about online abuse 🙌💪. As a fan of UK sports, I've seen some pretty harsh stuff go down in the world of professional athletes. It's terrifying for them and their families. The fact that this new app is available on all major platforms except one (which does seem like a weird omission considering how bad it is) is a good start 🤔.

I mean, what's the point of having a fancy AI system if you're not gonna include all the big players? It feels like they're trying to be heroes, but are still leaving a hole in their armor 😒. I hope this app really makes a difference for athletes like Kirsty Gilmour who've been through the wringer. Mental health is so important, and online abuse can be devastating 🤕.

I'm just glad that UK Sport is taking steps to protect its athletes 🙏. We need more support for our sports stars, especially when it comes to their mental wellbeing 💖.

omg u gotta know this 🤯 UK Sport just signed a huge contract for an AI-based system to protect British athletes online and its about time! 💻 I mean, think about it, athletes are already under so much pressure and now they have to deal with cyberbullies too? 😱 it's not fair. I love that Kirsty Gilmour is speaking out about her own experiences with abuse though, it's so inspiring to see athletes standing up for themselves like that 💪. the fact that 82% of abuse happens on platform X (ugh, can we just say Twitter already?) is a bummer tho 🤦‍♀️ still, any protection they can get is worth it and I'm glad UK Sport is taking this seriously 👍

OMG, finally something being done about online abuse 🤯! It's like, totally unacceptable what athletes have to go through, especially Kirsty Gilmour, poor girl 😕. £300k might seem like a lot, but I think it's a drop in the ocean compared to the mental health toll it can take on them. And, honestly, it's not just about the money, it's about creating a culture where athletes feel safe online 💖. I hope they get that platform X sorted out ASAP, I mean, 82% of abuse is way too much 🙄. Social Protect sounds like a lifesaver for all the athletes out there! Fingers crossed it makes a real difference 🤞.

🤔 so its good that UK Sport is doing something about online abuse but like why are they making this app so expensive £300k? 🤑 cant they do better with the money or somethin? also i wonder how does this AI thing work, is it super accurate? and what if someone just makes a fake account to try and get around the system? 🤷‍♀️

anyway im glad that athletes like Kirsty Gilmour have something like this for them, mental health matters so much especially for people in the public eye 💔. but its a bit weird that its not compatible with platform X, dont they use that one too? 🤦‍♂️

🤯 I mean can you even believe what's happening now? They're actually doing something about this online abuse thing... finally! 🙌 It's like they knew it was a huge problem for athletes' mental health and performance, but nobody wanted to do anything about it until now. 😒

But seriously though, £300k is not chump change. I mean it's a decent amount of money that could've been spent on something else, but at the end of the day this is about protecting our athletes and making sure they're safe online. 💯 It's about giving them a sense of security and empowerment, especially for someone like Kirsty Gilmour who's had to deal with some pretty horrific abuse in her career.

I'm all for innovation and tech solutions too, so the fact that Social Protect is using AI to scan posts in real-time is a great move. But come on Twitter, why not get on board? 🤷‍♂️ It's like they're just trolling everyone at this point. 82% of abuse originated from their platform?! That's wild! 🤯

I'm so glad UK Sport is taking steps to tackle this serious issue 🙌. Online abuse can have such a huge impact on athletes' mental health and performance, and it's not just about them, but also their families and loved ones 🤕. It's awesome that they're investing in a system like Social Protect that will provide real-time protection across multiple platforms 📱.

I mean, Kirsty Gilmour is an inspiration for speaking out about her experiences with online abuse 💪. And it's great to see UK Sport taking action and not just talking about it 🔊. But, I have to wonder why they're not including platform X in the initial rollout 🤔... 82% of abuse is coming from there, after all! 😕

Just saw the news about UK Sport's new app 🚫💻 Social Protect seems like a game changer for athletes dealing with online abuse 😔 It's crazy how common it is, especially among female athletes like Kirsty Gilmour, who's spoken out about getting death threats 🤯. The fact that 82% of abuse comes from platform X (can't believe Twitter isn't on board 🤷‍♀️) makes me wonder if they'll add support in the future? 🤔 Either way, it's awesome that UK Sport is taking action to protect its athletes 👏. Hopefully, this will help create a safer online environment for everyone 💖

🤔 The UK's decision to invest heavily in an AI-based system to combat online abuse is a step in the right direction, especially considering the alarming rise of social media-induced mental health issues among athletes 📈. Kirsty Gilmour's personal experience with death threats and rape threats is chilling, but it's reassuring to see her feeling more secure with the introduction of Social Protect 💻. The app's real-time scanning capabilities are a game-changer in addressing online harassment, and I'm curious to see how its effectiveness will be evaluated over time 📊. However, it's puzzling that platform X (formerly Twitter) is excluded from the app's compatibility, given the alarming statistics on abuse originating from this platform 🤷‍♀️. Perhaps there are plans to address this gap in the future? 😊

I'm not sure about this new Social Protect app... £300k sounds like a lot of cash to me 🤑. Don't get me wrong, online abuse is super concerning and athletes deserve better protection. But isn't it weird that the app can't even handle platform X? Like, what's the point if it's not compatible with where most abuse comes from? 🤔 I mean, I've seen some pretty harsh comments on Twitter (no love for X, btw 😉) and it feels like this is just a Band-Aid solution. Can we really rely on AI to solve this problem without looking at the root cause? 🤷‍♀️ And what's going on with platform X, anyway? Are they being left out or something? 🚫

I'm glad they're taking steps to address this issue, but I do think it's a bit weird that the app isn't compatible with platform X 🤔. I mean, social media companies should be working together to create a safer environment for everyone, not leaving one big gap like that. And 82% of abuse is coming from just one place? That's crazy! 💥 They should really look into why that is happening and see if they can't do something about it too. Still, I guess it's a start and more athletes will have access to this protection now 🙏. Maybe they'll be able to get platform X on board eventually? Fingers crossed 😊.

the government's finally doing something about the toxic online environment for athletes 🙌. i mean, can't imagine how hard it must be for them, constantly getting slammed on social media and affecting their mental health 🤕. but at least they've got this new app that's supposed to cut down the abuse, even if it's not 100% compatible with all platforms 🤔. still, gotta wonder why the other platform isn't included in the deal... seems like an oversight 🤷‍♀️. anyway, glad to hear athletes like kirsty gilmour are getting some protection and support 👏. hope this app makes a real difference in reducing online abuse 💻.

Can you believe how much tech has changed since I was at school? Remember those old dial-up internet days? 📊 Now we've got AI-based systems detecting online abuse in real-time... it's crazy! The fact that athletes like Kirsty Gilmour are being subjected to death threats and rape threats, though, is just heartbreaking. 😔 I mean, I was watching some of the badminton matches at the 2012 Olympics with my family, and Kirsty was always so focused and talented... it's awesome to see her speaking out against online abuse now. 🙌 Still, 82% of abuse coming from platform X? That's just not right. We should be pushing for compatibility on all platforms, you know? 🤔

omg i dont even know what ai means lol 🤖 is like a super smart computer or something? so they're gonna use this "ai" thingy to find online bad stuff about athletes? that's kinda cool, but also super sad cuz people are being mean to each other on the internet... and yeah, it would've been better if it was compatible with platform x too 🤦‍♀️ i'm still trying to figure out why people need to be so mean on social media anyway... like, can't we all just get along? 🤗

omg can't believe UK Sport is taking online abuse seriously 💪🌟 I mean, mental health matters so much for athletes and it's time we get this tech sorted 🤖💻 Social Protect sounds like a lifesaver, especially with apps not being compatible with platform X though that does sound dodgy 🚫. Glad Kirsty Gilmour is feeling more secure online tho 💕 gotta root for the underdog who's been through so much 😔 hope all UK athletes feel protected and empowered by this new system 💪👏

OMG, this is such a great move by UK Sport!!! 💖 I mean, online abuse can be super toxic and affect athletes' mental health in a big way 🤕. It's awesome that they're taking proactive steps to create a safer space for British athletes online. The Social Protect app sounds like a total game-changer ⚡️! I'm glad to hear that Kirsty Gilmour feels more empowered with this new protection around her online presence 😊. Let's keep pushing forward and making the internet a kinder place 🌈💕

the fact that UK Sport has finally stepped up its game to protect our athletes from online abuse is a big deal 🤝💪 i mean, we all know how toxic the internet can be, especially for those in the public eye like Kirsty Gilmour, and it's not right that she had to go through that kind of stuff. but at the same time, 82% of abuse coming from platform X is a pretty big gap 🤔 i wish they could find a way to make Social Protect compatible with Twitter too, because that's where most of the abuse seems to be happening. still, it's a start and we should all be grateful for it 💕

I'm worried about the fact that Social Protect isn't compatible with platform X 🤔. I mean, you can't just leave out a whole platform like that, especially when it's already been shown that 82% of online abuse is coming from there. It feels like we're not doing enough to protect athletes online. 🚫

🤔 so its nice that the UK is taking steps to protect its athletes online, but its kinda weird that they signed this contract for like £300k+ for just some AI system... seems like a lot of cash for something thats still not compatible with one of the biggest platforms 🤑 what if they had invested that in actually addressing the issue on platform X instead? 💡
