Cal misses its shot to beat No. 15 Virginia and become bowl eligible as Bears fall 31-21 at home

California Golden Bears Fall Short, Miss Bowl Eligibility in Thrilling Match Against Virginia Cavaliers

The Cal Bears' bid for bowl eligibility slipped away as they suffered a 31-21 defeat at the hands of the visiting Virginia Cavaliers on Saturday at Memorial Stadium. The loss marked California's second straight game without earning a bowl berth, leaving the team one win shy of securing ninth-year coach Justin Wilcox's job security.

Cal struggled to find its footing early in the contest, trailing 10-0 as it tried to muster consistency on offense against the Cavaliers' stingy defense. Meanwhile, Virginia capitalized on the Cal errors to build an early lead, which they never relinquished en route to a seven-game winning streak this season.

Quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele, who had played turnover-free in his previous two games, threw two interceptions and was sacked three times, contributing to the Bears' paltry 263 yards of offense. The Virginia defense's suffocating pressure forced Cal into a series of desperate throws, ultimately leading to the game-sealing interception by linebacker Kam Robinson with 29 seconds remaining.

The decisive play came after Sagapolutele's late-game Hail Mary attempt fell incomplete on fourth-and-2 from the Bears' 14-yard line. Virginia quarterback Chandler Morris then attempted an onside kick, which was recovered by Cal, but ultimately led to the game-sealing interception return for a touchdown.

Despite a spirited effort by star running back Raphael Kendrick, who scored three touchdowns in the game, Cal's inability to capitalize on its chances and maintain consistency on offense ultimately proved costly. The loss dropped the Bears' record to 5-4 overall and 2-3 in the ACC, leaving them one win shy of bowl eligibility.

The Bears will look to bounce back next week against No. 16 Louisville, which is now undefeated at 7-1 following a convincing 28-16 victory over Virginia Tech.

I'm thoroughly disappointed by Cal's subpar performance πŸ€•. Their inability to execute under pressure has been a recurring issue throughout the season, and it ultimately led to their downfall against Virginia πŸ˜”. The defense did its part in containing the Cavaliers' offense, but Cal's offense just couldn't get into gear βš–οΈ. It's a classic case of the law of averages – they've had some bad breaks, but unfortunately, that wasn't enough to propel them over the line πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ.

man I'm so bummed for Cal πŸ€•πŸ˜” they had that game in the bag but just couldn't finish it off #BowlEligibilityIsEverything - they're gonna need to step up their game if they wanna take down Louisville next week πŸ’ͺπŸ½πŸ‘Š especially with Morris and Co. looking fierce on the other side πŸ€‘πŸŽ― hopefully Sagapolutele can get his turnovers under control soon πŸ’‘ #GoldenBears #CalFootball

man that cal bears season just went up in flames lol what's gonna happen to wilcox though? i feel bad for sagapolutele he's been having a rough game but u gotta admit that guy is trying his best πŸ€” meanwhile, louisville looks like it's on fire they're like the only undefeated team left can cal turn their season around with a win against them? idk but wilcox needs to get his offense together ASAP 😬

πŸ€” It's wild how one game can change the entire trajectory of a team's season, right? I mean, Cal was so close to securing that bowl berth, but it just slipped through their fingers. It makes you wonder what could've been if they had just found some consistency on offense πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. And that last play by Kam Robinson? Unbelievable pressure from the defense πŸš€. But at the same time, it's a tough pill to swallow for the team and fans. You gotta feel for Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele, he was playing turnover-free and then just had a couple of mistakes that sealed their fate πŸ˜”. And what does this mean for Justin Wilcox? Will this be his last year at the helm or can they bounce back from this loss πŸ’?

πŸ€• gotta feel for Cal, they were so close to getting that bowl spot πŸŽ‰ but just couldn't get it done πŸ˜” their offense was all over the place and Sagapolutele had some major brain farts on defense πŸ’₯ can't let one game slip away like this and not learn from it πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ hope they regroup and come back strong against Louisville 🏈πŸ’ͺ

man i just saw this crazy youtube video of a guy playing the piano with his feet lol what's up with that? anyway back to football so cal bears are struggling and stuff but you know what would've been cool if they had taken that onside kick all the way down to the virginia 20 like for sure

I mean, it's really tough for Cal right now. They had such high hopes going into this game and you'd think they'd be able to pull it off against a decent team like Virginia, but I guess the energy just wasn't there. Sagapolutele's got some major issues - two ints? that's just unacceptable. And when you're getting sacked three times in one game, that tells me their O-line is not doing its job.

I also feel for Kendrick, he's putting up some solid numbers but it's like his teammates aren't supporting him enough. You can tell they were all over the place on offense - some plays were great, others were just flat out bad. And what's with that Hail Mary attempt? I mean, you're down by 10 points and you're going for broke? Just not my kinda game plan.

But at the same time, I gotta give credit to Virginia - they played a solid game and deserved the win. Morris is looking pretty sharp this season and their defense is just a whole different level from Cal's.

Anyway, one loss doesn't define the season, but it's definitely not ideal for Cal right now...

Ugh, I told you Cal was gonna fall short πŸ˜’. Their offense has been all over the place this season and it's just frustrating to watch. They can't even get their QB right, Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele had two picks? That's just not it, coach Wilcox needs to make some changes ASAP πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. And what's up with those intercepts by Kam Robinson? That kid's a beast πŸ”₯. But yeah, Virginia played solid defense and capitalized on Cal's mistakes. Not surprised they won, but still disappointed for the Bears πŸ€•. They gotta regroup and focus next week against Louisville, can't let one loss define their season ⏰.

πŸ€• just saw that Cal's chances at bowl eligibility got dashed 😩 they were so close too... like only one win away πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ and then they go and blow it in the last minute of the game 🚨 that Hail Mary attempt was a heartbreaker for sure 🀯 meanwhile, Louisville is looking good to roll undefeated now πŸ‘ gotta give credit where credit is due πŸ’―

I'm not sure how much longer I can keep trusting these AI football simulations... πŸ€” They're always saying Cal Bears are gonna win or lose and it's never like they actually have any idea what's gonna happen in real life, you know? 🏈 And now they're saying Virginia Cavaliers are undefeated after beating a bunch of other teams, but we all saw that game against Virginia Tech... πŸ˜‚ It's just not believable. I mean, if the Cal Bears were really so bad, why did Raphael Kendrick have 3 touchdowns today? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ The stats just don't add up and it feels like some people are just making this stuff up as they go along...

man i feel bad for cal bears they really needed this game and it slipped away from them πŸ€• their offense was just not consistent and jaron-keawe sagapolutele had a rough day at the office throwing two picks and getting sacked thrice 🚫 that's gotta hurt their stats were pretty low too 263 yards of offense is not what you wanna see in a big game like this πŸ“‰ but still i think they showed heart beating raphael kendrick's three touchdowns was a highlight 🎯 they just need to regroup and focus on the next one against louisville 🏈
