Campbell's CEO Placed on Leave Amid Racist Comments Allegations
A high-ranking executive at Campbell's, one of America's largest soup and snack manufacturers, has been placed on leave as the company investigates allegations that he made racist comments about employees and customers.
Martin Bally, vice president of information technology, was named in a lawsuit filed by Robert Garza, a former employee who claims to have overheard Bally describe Campbell's food products as "highly processed" meant for "poor people." The recording, which has not been made public, allegedly captured Bally making derogatory remarks about Indian workers and downplaying the effects of marijuana on his behavior.
Garza claimed that when he told his manager, J.D. Aupperle, about Bally's comments, he was met with a lackluster response, neither encouraging nor discouraging him from reporting the incident to HR. Garza was subsequently terminated from his position just 20 days after raising concerns, and is now suing Campbell's for wrongful termination.
Campbell's has issued a statement condemning any language that "does not reflect our values and culture," but also downplayed Bally's role in food production, emphasizing that the comments about their products are "inaccurate" and "absurd." The company maintains that it takes such incidents seriously and will investigate further.
