China has increased military presence around the Senkaku Islands, also claimed by Japan as the Diaoyu islands, amid escalating tensions with Tokyo over comments made by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding Taiwan.
The Chinese coast guard vessel 1307 conducted a "rights enforcement patrol" through the waters of the islands, stating that it was a lawful operation to uphold its rights and interests. The move comes as Beijing ramps up pressure on Japan following Takaichi's remarks, which warned that if China attacked Taiwan, Tokyo would respond militarily.
China claims Taiwan as its own territory and has signalled an intention to annex it under "reunification", with the possibility of using force. This stance has sparked international concern, particularly among the US and its allies in the region.
Taiwan's defence ministry reported detecting 30 Chinese military aircraft and seven navy ships operating around the island over the past 24 hours, including a coast guard vessel that was likely the 1307 formation. Maps showed drones flying between Taiwan and Japanese islands off its north-east coast, some of which appeared to be heading towards Yonaguni Island.
China's consul general in Osaka commented on Takaichi's remarks, prompting Tokyo to lodge a formal protest. Beijing has also summoned the Japanese ambassador for the first time in over two years and warned that any Japanese intervention would be doomed to fail.
In another escalation, China urged its citizens to "carefully reconsider" studying in Japan due to concerns about security, which could have significant implications for Japanese universities.
