Classical Mixtape: A Live Takeover review – one queue after another mars orchestral jamboree

Classical Mixtape Left in Queue - A Live Orchestral Jamboree Falls Flat

The latest experiment from the Southbank Centre aimed to create a live mix tape experience where six world-class orchestras played short sets, repeated throughout the evening. The idea was tantalizing – an immersive event that allowed audiences to wander between performances and enjoy music on their own terms.

However, things didn't quite come together as planned. In the Royal Festival Hall, the London Philharmonic Orchestra kicked off with a brief but enthusiastic performance of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. Yet, despite its energetic start, the set seemed hastily assembled, and the overall atmosphere felt disjointed. A meandering finale from Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony only exacerbated the sense of confusion.

The problem was compounded by the fact that each orchestra played a short set that would be repeated three times over 75 minutes – leaving audiences to navigate crowded spaces with limited seating capacity. Queues became the norm, rather than an opportunity for serendipitous discovery. Audiences were left stranded in bottlenecks, struggling to catch up on performances they'd missed.

Meanwhile, some of the other orchestras delivered more promising results. In the Clore Ballroom, the Chineke! Junior Orchestra managed a rousing performance of Margaret Bonds' Montgomery Variations, despite the challenges posed by an unconventional layout that felt like a series of exhibits in a gallery. However, their lack of experience showed, and a less intricate piece would have been wiser.

A more industrial sound was found in the Queen Elizabeth Hall's undercroft, where the London Sinfonietta performed a trio of Steve Reich works to a receptive audience. The atmospheric space seemed designed for this type of music, with the lighting eerily reminiscent of a nightclub.

Not all orchestras fared as well, and the Aurora Orchestra's Purcell Room performance felt like an afterthought – its musical peaks lost amidst the chaos of an underutilized venue. Even more baffling was the decision to leave one of the Southbank Centre's most prominent halls unused.

Ultimately, Classical Mixtape left me disenchanted with its half-baked vision of classical music in bite-size chunks. The event promised much but failed to deliver a cohesive experience that would inspire future generations of music lovers. As I exited, it became clear that this experiment had little chance of success – and for good reason.

🎵😐 The whole concept of the live mix tape was so cool, but they just didn't execute it well. Having to navigate through crowds with limited seating was super frustrating. And don't even get me started on how some of the orchestras were left to struggle in underutilized venues 🤯 I mean, come on, you'd think the Southbank Centre would know better than to leave one of their most prominent halls unused 💸 It feels like they just phoned it in and expected magic to happen. And yeah, the fact that some of them had shorter sets repeated three times over 75 minutes was a total waste of time 🕰️ Overall, I'm still waiting for someone to get classical music right on the platform... 😒

ugh dont even get me started on this live orchestral jamboree 🤯 i mean come on who thought this was a good idea? six orchestras playing short sets repeated like 3 times over an hour 🕰️ and still its disjointed lol they must've wanted to drive ppl crazy with all the queueing 😩 and what's up with one of the halls just sitting empty 🤔 like they just didnt care about the whole thing. the chineke! junior orchestra was actually pretty cool tho 🎵 but overall its a big fat fail 👎

Ugh, what a mess! 🤯 They gotta be kidding me with these orchestras queuing up like they're at the DMV 🚗. Who thought short sets repeated three times would be fun? Sounds like a snooze fest to me 😴. And don't even get me started on the space layout – I felt like I was stuck in some sort of music museum exhibit 🎨. Give me a decent concert hall with some actual seating capacity any day! 🚫

🤔 What did you think of the Classical Mixtape event at Southbank Centre? You went and checked out a live orchestral jamboree but the whole thing felt kinda rushed, right? 🕰️ It was like they were trying to cram too many performances into one evening.

I mean, some of the orchestras did okay, like the Chineke! Junior Orchestra – their energy was infectious 💃. But others...not so much 🤷‍♀️. Like, what's up with leaving an entire hall unused? 😕 That just feels like a waste.

the southbank centre's latest attempt at mixing things up was literally just a bunch of orchestras playing the same songs over and over again...like, what's next? a never-ending loop of elevator music 🚪🎵 not impressed by the lack of cohesion or creativity. all that hype for a musical experience that felt like a hot mess. and can we talk about the crowd control issues? it was like they wanted people to feel frustrated 🤦‍♀️ at least some of the orchestras delivered, but overall, this whole thing just left me underwhelmed 😐

🎵 The idea was cool, but execution was whack 🤦‍♂️. Overcrowding and queuing ruined the vibe. Needed more planning and coordination 📅. Some orchestras shined, but it wasn't enough to save the whole thing 💔. Time to go back to the drawing board ⬆️

omg i just got outta dis live orchestral jamboree thingy @ the Southbank Centre 🤔🎵 and i gotta say its a total letdown 🙄! they tried to make it like a mixtape, but its more like they threw a bunch of different performances together w/o any real cohesion 🗑️. i mean, who thought it was a good idea 2 have every orchestra play the same piece THREE TIMES 🤯?!? and dont even get me started on the queues @ every venue lol 😂. i did enjoy some parts tho, like da Chineke! Junior Orchestra's set in da Clore Ballroom - they had some awesome energy 💪! but overall its just a bunch of disjointed bits strung together w/o any real musical flow 🎶👎

Ugh 🤕...can't believe they dropped the ball on this one. It's like they took all the good ideas and mashed them into a big ol' mess 🤯. Short sets repeated multiple times? No thanks 🚫. And what was up with the venue layout? It sounds like they just threw some stuff against the wall to see what stuck 🤷‍♀️. I mean, you can't just ignore an audience that's trying to move around and enjoy different performances. They must've forgotten that people have better things to do than stand in lines for 75 minutes 😩. And don't even get me started on the Aurora Orchestra...like what were they thinking? 🤔

😐 I gotta say, the idea of a live mix tape with multiple orchestras playing short sets sounded like a cool concept, but in practice, it just didn't work out 🎵. The execution was all over the place - some bands were on point, while others felt like they were phoning it in 🤔. And don't even get me started on the queues and lack of seating... it's crazy to think that something that's meant to be an immersive experience can still leave you feeling stuck in traffic 🚗. Maybe they should've focused more on creating a flow that flows (get it?) rather than trying to cram too much into one event 🤷‍♀️.

I was so hyped for this event but unfortunately it felt like they took the idea of a mixtape and turned it into a chore to navigate 🤦‍♀️. The fact that each orchestra only played for 10-15 minutes and had to repeat their set multiple times just made it feel like I was stuck in a never-ending loop of music 🔄. And don't even get me started on the crowds and queues - I've seen more efficient queuing systems at a festival 🎉. The ones that did work, like the Chineke! Junior Orchestra's performance, were definitely highlights but it felt like they were fighting against the system. Maybe try again with a new format next time? 😐

I'm still trying to figure out the concept behind this live mix tape thingy... 🤔 It sounds like a great idea on paper, but in execution, it just didn't quite work out. I mean, who wants to navigate crowds with limited seating capacity just to catch a glimpse of a short orchestra set? 🚫 And don't even get me started on the disjointed atmosphere – it's like they took all these amazing orchestras and stuck them together without any real thought to how they'd all fit together.

And what's up with leaving one of the main halls unused? 🤷‍♀️ It felt like a waste of space, especially when you consider how much potential there was for some really cool crossovers between different performances. I'm just not convinced that this experiment was worth it. The Chineke! Junior Orchestra's performance in the Clore Ballroom was definitely a highlight, but overall, I'd say Classical Mixtape left me feeling pretty underwhelmed 😐.

I was really looking forward to this live orchestral jamboree thingy 🤔, but honestly, it just didn't come together like they hoped. I mean, the idea of being able to wander between performances and enjoy music on your own terms sounds awesome, but in practice, it felt like trying to navigate a maze blindfolded 😂. The queues were a nightmare, and by the time I got to see some of the other orchestras, I'd already missed half their sets! 🎧

And don't even get me started on the underutilized venue... I mean, what's up with leaving one of the Southbank Centre's most prominent halls unused? It just felt like they didn't have a clear plan for how to make it work. The Chineke! Junior Orchestra did sound pretty good in that Clore Ballroom though - maybe next time? 🤞

I was really looking forward to this event but ended up stuck in the Royal Festival Hall's queue for ages 🤯. The idea of a live mixtape sounds amazing but it just didn't work out - everyone rushing around trying to catch different sets. I did love the Chineke! Junior Orchestra tho, their energy was infectious 😊. And yeah, some of those other orchestras really struggled in that industrial space at the Queen Elizabeth Hall 🤔. What were they thinking with Aurora Orchestra's performance? Leaving that hall empty is just bizarre 🙄. Overall, I was pretty disappointed - not my cuppa tea

ugh i just got back from the most confusing concert ever 🤯 i went to see my favorite artist live and they played like 3 different sets in a row and then had to leave because of some equipment failure 😩 anyway i was thinking about this new classical music thingy that i heard about and it sounds kinda cool but also super chaotic 🎵 like how can u expect people to sit still for like 2 hours when there are 6 different orchestras playing at the same time? 🤔 and what's with all these short sets? cant they just play a whole album or something? 🎶

I was really looking forward to this live orchestral jamboree, but honestly the execution fell flat 🤕. The idea sounds amazing on paper, but in practice, it just didn't work out. I mean, who thought it was a good idea to have each orchestra play short sets that repeat three times? It's like they were trying to cram too many performances into one evening and ended up creating more stress than serendipity 🚶‍♀️. And don't even get me started on the venue situation - I felt like I was stuck in a real-life game of musical chairs, except instead of chairs, it was orchestras 😩. The only orchestra that really stood out to me was the Chineke! Junior Orchestra - they were on fire 🎯, but it's clear they're still growing into their sound. Sorry to say, I think this whole experiment was a bit of a mess 💔.

it's so disappointing when events fall flat like this 🤕 the idea of a live mixtape is genius, but they couldn't even execute it properly 📚 it's not just about the music, it's about creating an immersive experience that lets you wander and discover new things on your own terms. but instead, it felt like a chore to navigate through crowds with limited seating capacity 🚶‍♀️ and then some of the performances were really good, but they got lost in the shuffle 🎵 i'm especially bummed for the Chineke! Junior Orchestra, they had some great energy, but maybe not enough experience for that type of setup 🤞

ugh what a waste of money 🤑 u gotta be kidding me they cant even get the logistics right? 6 orchestras, one venue, 75 minutes... sounds like a recipe for disaster 🎵 and yeah i can imagine the crowds, the waiting in line, the feeling of being stuck in some kind of musical purgatory 😴 dont even get me started on that queen elizabeth hall performance felt like they were just phoning it in 🤷‍♂️ industrial sound is cool and all but come on guys u couldve done better 👎

the southbank centre's attempt at a live mixtape event was like trying to cram too many songs into a playlist - just didn't work 🎵👎. i mean, who thought 6 world-class orchestras playing short sets over 75 mins would be a recipe for success? 🤔 it sounds like they just wanted to play all their cool pieces in one night but forgot about the logistics... and let's be real, the whole thing felt like an exercise in chaos 🕺. i was stuck in queues like everyone else, missing out on performances because of the overcrowding 🚶‍♀️. some of the orchestras did okay, like the chineke! junior orchestra, but overall it just felt like a mess 🤦‍♀️. next time they should just stick to a single act or venue, less is more 💡
