A southeast Houston convenience store clerk was shot multiple times during a robbery while closing up shop on Wednesday morning, authorities said. The incident occurred outside the store on Barberry Drive near Scott Street at around 1:30 a.m.
According to police, two suspects wearing ski masks approached the store clerk as he was shutting down for the night and made him carry a bag containing approximately $1,500 in cash. The suspect's intention was clear - they were after the money inside the bag.
Tragically, the clerk was initially shot once in the front of the store before taking off running around to the side, where he collapsed on the ground. In a chaotic and violent confrontation, the suspects chased him down and subjected him to further gunfire, reportedly shooting him up to eight times in total.
However, thanks to the swift response of police officers who arrived at the scene shortly after the incident, the clerk was provided with emergency medical attention. Fortunately, despite being shot multiple times, he is currently alive and receiving treatment.
The suspects, however, remain at large. Police say they have no one in custody yet, but investigators are hopeful that review of store surveillance footage may help identify the culprits.
In the meantime, authorities are urging anyone with information about the robbery to come forward and contact the Houston Police Department at 713-308-8800 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
